That was just about the best window I've seen into Joni's heart in quite some time. How wonderful for people to remember and reveal so eloquently. I have two thoughts from reading her answers. The first concerns "golden Reggie." I've long thought that her reference to "skating after golden Reggie" either meant that she was chasing the affection of some local rich kid (like Reggie from the Archie comics) who happened to be blonde, OR perhaps she was just dreaming of leaving Maidstone for Regina. The second concerns Sharon's comment about Joni "not letting grass grow under her feet." While I'd agree with that from the standpoint of her creative output, the BelAir and Sechelt homes would seem to contradict. Oh Joni likes her roots, for sure. She could easily have cut and run as the miners encroached on Sechelt, but she has formed a special bond with both places and has celebrated Saskatoon as well. These notes from Sharon really celebrate lifelong friendship, something I hope we all enjoy. I asked her a couple of questions based on the responses I got from y'all and some of my own. Here's what she had to say: Q: Did Joni talk to you at all about "Song For Sharon" before she wrote it or released it? A: No I did not have any idea that Joni was going to write a song for me and the first I heard of it was when my sister phoned and informed me. The last time I saw Joni was at her mother's funeral in Saskatoon nearly a year and a half ago.It was a very small private service to which she invited Cliff and I and Lisa, and it provided an opportunity to "catch up" A few of her cousins and I were talking and in the course of the conversation she said, " I wrote a song for Sharon you know" It wouldn't occur to her that this would be anything out of the ordinary. And I guess I didn't think so either, because I never really told many people about it - at least not until sometime later when it seemed people were interested. Q: In the song, there's a line about "skating after golden Reggie"...to whom was Joni referring? A: I can't tell you for sure who Golden Reggie is - my recollection is that there was a boy she was interested in, but I can't be sure. We did, however, take a real interest in the weddings in our little church in Maidstone. (Back in the day when anyone who wanted to could come and watch) I maintained my friendship with Joan (as I knew her then) when they moved to North Battleford -visiting often. _________________________________________________________________ See how Windows Mobile brings your life togetherat home, work, or on the go. http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/msnnkwxp1020093182mrt/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2008 10:37:44 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: sharon's response to your call Thanks Mags - both Sharon and her daughter Lisa (who initiated the communication in the first place, and it was Catherine who actually got the ball rolling) are anxious for feedback so I'm going to compile the comments and send it to them. When the Hejira album was first broadcast in its entirety on WQBK in Albany NY back in November 1976 very late at night, I phoned up the DJ and chatted with him about the sea change in the music, and the psychology behind the songwriting. I felt that while returning to the introspective, it was from a much healthier place than was "Blue" or "For The Roses." Joni has said that the songs on Hejira are ones that "only I could have written" (or something to that effect). I'll take her at her word. It's good to hear from someone who was actually there, and who knows Joni and her family. It puts a human face on it somehow. Not that Joni isn't human - of course she is - but she seems this somehow distant other-worldy creature sometimes, one that most of us will never get to know. Hearing from Sharon brings her back to earth and is, for me at least, kind of comforting. > I have two thoughts from reading her answers. The first > concerns "golden Reggie." Yeah, like the golden boy - the one all the girls would love to have. And you could be right about the Archie connection. In "Cherokee Louise", she sings, "I've got Archies and Silver Screen. I hope you'll join me in doing this. A brilliant idea for $10, or even $5: Instead of (in addition to?) us all sending around more emails about Sarah Palin not representing all women, let's all make a donation to Planned Parenthood.. in Sarah Palin's name. And here's the good part: when you make a donation to PP in her name, they'll send her a card telling her that the donation has been made in her honor. Here's the link to the Planned Parenthood website: *https://secure.ga0.org/02/pp10000_inhonor* * This part is important: You'll need to fill in the address to let PP know where to send the "in Sarah Palin's honor" card. It's suggested that you use the address for the McCain campaign headquarters, which is: Gov. Sarah Palin c/o McCain for President 1235 S. Clark Street 1st Floor Arlington, VA 22202 PS make sure you use that link above or choose the pulldown of Donate -- Honorary or Memorial Donations, not the regular "Donate Online." For $5 or $10, we'll make our statement to her with all of the cards and also give Planned Parenthood more ability to educate and care for our "sisters." And be sure to forward this to your friends!! Lori Santa Rosa, CA (*Note: I checked the link, and it's valid. If you'd like to check it for your own peace of mind, go to www.plannedparenthood.org, click on "Donate", then click on "Honorary or Memorial Donations" in the drop-down box, or on "In Honor / In Memory" further on down the page. You will arrive at the same link as referenced above.) ~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2008 16:16:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Notes from Sharon You are very welcome, Jeannie - I'm a very lucky guy and again I will pass credit to Catherine for communicating with Sharon's daughter in the first place. Teamwork rules! I have to say, for someone who has spent literally HOURS & HOURS listening to this song and being transported by it, it's been really bizarre communicating directly to the person to whom the song was written for to begin with. I have compiled some of the comments and sent them to Sharon and her daughter. I'm sure they will be moved by them and hopefully it can serve to open up some further dialogue. We Joni folk are a kind & gentle bunch but we have our greedy side too, especially when it comes to details about Joni. I'd always assumed it was Joni as the voice reminded me somewhat of a informal impromptu Joni singing. Also the insistence on "playing that weird minor chord) reminded me so much of Joni and her unusual tunings and preference for minor chords. This is what I run into for never having read a book regarding Joni's life and/or music!! But it's a learning experience for me (and I'm sure countless other lurkers and contributors). I don't know why it is is followed by the (rap) designation as there is nothing rap at all about the song. It is a performance of "The Happy Birthday" song which has been rightly or wrongly copyrighted by Time/Warner and as such is subject to royalties and is a large reason why it is rather infrequently included in in various commercial media such as films, musical works, or television. Thanks for the correction. - -- - -Mark in Florida NP: Belinda - Luz Sin Gravidad On Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 8:11 AM, wrote: > > > -original message- > Subject: Re: Birthday, now jc > From: "Mark Angelo" > Date: 24.09.2008 3:09 pm > > It's a song off of Mingus...Joni and others are singing the traditional > "Happy Birthday" song to Charles Mingus. > -- > > >>> > I think Joni didn't take part in the Happy Birthday singing.
