I asked her a couple of questions based on the responses I got from y'all and some of my own. Here's what she had to say: Q: Did Joni talk to you at all about "Song For Sharon" before she wrote it or released it? A: No I did not have any idea that Joni was going to write a song for me and the first I heard of it was when my sister phoned and informed me. The last time I saw Joni was at her mother's funeral in Saskatoon nearly a year and a half ago.It was a very small private service to which she invited Cliff and I and Lisa, and it provided an opportunity to "catch up" A few of her cousins and I were talking and in the course of the conversation she said, " I wrote a song for Sharon you know" It wouldn't occur to her that this would be anything out of the ordinary. And I guess I didn't think so either, because I never really told many people about it - at least not until sometime later when it seemed people were interested. Q: In the song, there's a line about "skating after golden Reggie"...to whom was Joni referring? A: I can't tell you for sure who Golden Reggie is - my recollection is that there was a boy she was interested in, but I can't be sure. We did, however, take a real interest in the weddings in our little church in Maidstone. (Back in the day when anyone who wanted to could come and watch) I maintained my friendship with Joan (as I knew her then) when they moved to North Battleford -visiting often. Q: Are there any particular memories of your childhood friendship that you'd like to share? A: "When they lived in Saskatoon, I visited often as well and my strongest memories are of a road trip I went on with Joni and her parents in about 1957 - have pictures of that trip and will have to look them up to see the exact dates. We travelled through the states to eastern Canada - a wonderful trip for a couple of teens - our heartthrob was Pat Boone and favorite song was 'Love Letters in the Sand'". Q: What are your thoughts on the song itself ("Song For Sharon")? A: "Since there seems to be (an) interest in the song she wrote, I may think about writing a memoir of our friendship. As for the song - there have been questions about the reversed roles we ended up in - me wanting to be a singer and she wanting to be a farmer's wife. That isn't the way I remember it and am not convinced that there is much to read into the final words of the song except that she was at a crossroads and it seems to me that she was doing some reflection on very happy and simpler times for her. I'm fairly introverted and while I love to entertain people with my music and am most comfortable in front of an audience, I never really wanted fame or did aspire to the life of an entertainer and I believe Joni was always cut out to be an artist in every sense of the word. I am still married to my farmer and still live on the farm on which he was born - how's that for stability? And yes, I still sing for my family and friends - -although I'd have to admit more for my friends, since my four grown children don't show all that much interest in my music except on special occasions (perhaps with the exception of Lisa). My grandchildren, on the other hand, love me to sing to them. I have had a wonderful relationship with Joni's parents over the years (Myrt was really a surrogate grandmother to Lisa) and still see her dad whenever I get to Saskatoon. Joni and I have talked about meeting at her place in Sechelt and hope that will happen sometime in the near future - but as you will know she does not let grass grow under her feet! I hope my ramblings have answered at least some of your wonderings." Sharon closed her note to me by saying that we should feel free to contact her if we wanted any other information. I for one would LOVE to see those 1957 pictures...
