I love Barcelona and I love 90% of what Woody Allen does but this is not one of his best films. There are many reasons why I didn't like it but I won't go into that right now, (ask me offline if you are interested) but the interesting thing for me was that Allen was portraying an image of Barcelona that was totally alien to the city where I have lived for the last 17 years. He is totally out of touch with reality if he thinks Barcelona is *about to*explode onto the world stage as a city. We're awash with tourists and have been since the 1992 Olympics. We don't want more visitors, we can't cope, so why the City Hall and the Autonomous government stumped up 10% of the budget I cannot understand, if they are always talking of a sustainable city. But I digress. My questions are for the people who live in cities where films get made: Is Manhattan (remotely, sometimes?) like Allen's portrayal of it? Is Allen's version of Paris and Venice anything like the reality of those two lovely cities (Laurent, Adriano?). mickey pritchy barcelona NP Groundhogs playing Groundhog Blues ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Sep 2008 08:02:03 -0700 From: "Mark Scott" Subject: Re: Vicky Cristina Barcelona NJC - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Pritchard" To: "list" Sent: Sunday, September 21, 2008 5:37 AM Subject: Vicky Cristina Barcelona NJC > mickey pritchy barcelona > I'm not a Woody Allen fan. I liked 'Annie Hall' and 'Hannah and Her Sisters' was pretty good. He pulled some amazing performances out of his actors in his Bergman tribute 'Interiors'. Some of the others I've seen were hit and miss. I thought 'Manhattan' was pretentious and in view of later events, Woody's character's involvement with the young Mariel Hemmingway seems somewhat prophetic. It always made me uneasy. But just the title of this new movie would probably put me off from seeing it. It seems kinda cute, cute, cute in a stupid a** way to me somehow. I like Penelope Cruz and thought she played her role fantastically. The ending totally cracked me up. I'm with you though, as far as contemplating how movies depict the cities they are filmed in. The last movie I saw that filmed in my neighborhood was "Into the Wild" though the Atlanta/Decatur scene was very brief. As for how the Alaskan wilderness was depicted it seeemed pretty convincing to me. In any case, I would enjoy visiting Spain someday regardless. Another movie I saw recently took place in Spain, "Vantage Point", which was a pretty thrilling picture. Victor, heading soon to the last Braves home game of the year vs. the Mets Go Red Sox! I cannot believe the way Greta whatever on Fox news and so many other Mad Republicans scoffed off at Mallick so viciously just because she's genuine. Not even a bit etiquette exists any longer for these pissed off, jacked up Republican critics. I thought some of you might appreciate this sweet inspiration, for the times when bad news comes knocking at your garden gate. "Q:What helps you deal with personal adversities? A: There is a song by Leonard Cohen, and I have these lyrics posted everywhere: "Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." It means take what you are dealt. I'm also writing a new book, and it is basically ruminations on what to do when bad things happen.
