I'd like to hear, not what Joni treasures you own, but what treasures Joni owns that you have given to her. Aside from letters of appreciation, have you ever sent her a gift? Kate, who left an antique plate for her at the Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon a year or two ago. After the story about the lost or stolen mask, I was pretty worried, but I was more worried about getting the thing shipped to her without breakage, so I trusted to the manager of the hotel to get the plate into her hands. The plate contains an image of the Bessborough seen from a vantage point behind one of the bridges spanning the river. I never did hear from Ms Joan, but her management in Vancouver confirmed that she'd received it. http://xoetc.antville.org Who Does She Think She Is? The lecture was somewhat light as lectures go, I suppose, and was a bit of a plug for "The world in six songs," his latest book, but it was not intended to be anything very heavy and was, instead, presented as an interdisciplinary guest lecture combining elements of psychology, neuroscience and music. Dr Levitin spoke for a bit, and then we heard vocal performances by members of the Vocal Pedagogy masters program, interspersed with a little more talk by Dr Levitin. Daniel Levitin contends that it is music that helps to define us as humans and that music preceded speech. He has identified six types of songs that perhaps define us as human: songs of friendship, joy, comfort, knowledge, religion and love. He made it clear that he wasn't suggesting that there are only six types of songs as absolute fact but more as an easier way to help illustrate his point that music shapes us as human beings. He said that a lot of how we teach little children involves either sing-song talking when we baby-talk to little ones, or little songs to help teach them things. For example, we teach them the alphabet by singing the ABC song. Then, as a little joke, he said that music must have come before language because we need to sing the ABC song FIRST, before we can read or write. Daniel Levitin's focus is more on the popular song, although the performers sang classical songs, two for each of the six types, and a little heavy on the Schubert lieder, but with some amazing singers with beautiful voices, accompanied by an amazing pianist. There were a couple of Joni mentions, with Dr Levitin saying pretty much the same thing both times. He says that singing is probably the most honest expression of human emotion or thought possible. If we read a novel, we don't expect that everything that is written actually happened; if we watch a play or movie, we know that the actors are not really the people they are portraying; but, if we hear a song, in particular of the "confessional" singer/songwriter type, we expect that the feelings expressed in this song are true. While he didn't actually use the expression "Joni Mitchell never lies," he did ask us how we would feel if Joni came out and said that she never meant any of it and had just made it all up. They were selling copies of his latest book outside the concert hall, but a couple of days before payday, I didn't have the money for it, but it's just as well. They were selling them for $32 and I see it on amazon.ca for $16. Yeah! NP (yoiks! an acronym!) Apologies to all who are sick of this, esp. you non-American Joniamigos. However, in my department at UConn, I find it curious that it's all the non-Americans who are more interested in this election than the Americans. C'est bizarre. Go figure! Debra, if I ever run for office, will you be my campaign manager? You write so clearly. You wrote: 1. He's the smartest candidate. There are huge complex issues now that need to be resolved and the person who can look at all sides of an issue, who is curious, who is confident enough to take advice from people he doesn't always agree with (such as Joe Biden)... take all that and come up with solutions, maybe brand new solutions!, is the person best suited for the job. **** Yes! There are indeed huge complex issues ("this massive mess we're in"). And it's not just his innate intelligence and smarts, but let's look at his education, too. Isn't that the first thing people put on their resumes/c.v.s? Obama went to Harvard (Hi Chuck!) Law School, and I believe he taught constitutional law. Ha. Remember the Constitution (that Bush said was "just a God-damned piece of paper)?" As we were told to do in our college exams, "compare and contrast" the candidates. McCain, according to a former classmate and fellow POW: "In fact he barely managed to graduate, standing 5th from the bottom of his 800 man graduating class. I and many others have speculated that the main reason he did graduate was because his father was an Admiral, and also his grandfather, both U.S. Naval Academy graduates." Source: http://www.military.com/opinion/0,15202,164859,00.html?wh=wh (This is good ammo for those w/ military backgrounds, imo. I'm going to share it with my middle brother (USMC), hoping it will gently sway him. Never say never.) Sound familiar? Another legacy admission and graduate. I fear another free-dumb President. From what I have read, Barack Obama made it through school on his own smarts and ambition. And Sarah Palin? How many schools did she attend to get her undergrad degree? Four? (I really don't know for sure.) I'm not sure what that means, but it does not suggest stability to me. DS again: 2. He is even tempered and consistent. Some people complain Barack is too cool, too cerebral... I'll take that any day over someone who's impulsive, makes decisions from the gut, gets testy when whatever talking point he's repeated as an answer is questioned, and who has shown his nasty threatening vindictive nature to many people he's worked with. Sounds like Bush. The description also fits McCain. I don't want a President or VP I can have a beer with. I like what Jon Stewart said. Something like: "I dunno. I kinda WANT a President who is smarter than me." "Nasty threatening vindictive nature..." Yikes. To quote that classmate/fellow POW Phillip encore une fois: "I can verify that John has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced first hand. Folks, quite honestly that is not the finger I want next to that red button." I have heard this from many other sources. Scary! Leadfoot McCain with a hot-wire head? "Thanks, but no thanks!" ***** DS again: 3. Because of his smarts and even temper, I trust that whatever decisions Barack makes (even ones I may not agree with) will have been thoroughly and thoughtfully considered. It does not bother me that it takes a little longer to get his answer out. To me that shows he's THINKING! Here's to THINKING people! Is that refreshing or WHAT? Keep your gut reactions hid, and think! (NPIMH: Aretha) **** DS again: 4. His temperament and common sense approach (versus a rigid ideological stance) has made it easy for him to work with Repubs to get legislation passed. Repubs claim Barack never has, and McCain always does, but neither claim is true. Barack worked with Senate Repubs on reining in nuclear material, on immigration (and that included working with McCain), and on ethics reform. In the Illinois senate he also worked with members of the other party, especially for health care for children. Yes, you have to look at both sides -- all sides. And regarding his even temperament? I have a friend whose brother is a psychiatrist. This analyst told me that he really likes Obama and believes that he can handle anything thrown at him, because of his even temperament. Play it cool, play it cool: fifty fifty fire and ice. GO OBAMA! Just my quarter in the Wurlitzer. Thanks for the space. I hear there are other members who have one of the boots Joni wears on the cover of FTR. they were stolen off her feet as she sat eating a hamburger whilst watching the drag car racing at Santa Pod raceway near Birmingham in the UK. It is a little know fact that Joni is a total petrol head and has a secret stash of Hummers in her underground car storeage facility. Other Joni treasures include a facsimile hippopotamus that you hit with a stick and it goes "boom boom" but quite how Mags keeps that hidden in her basement when the thing weighs 4 tons I have no idea...it appeared on stage for her secret inner circle house party tour of 1990 that no one ever mentions! I mean how did Muller REALLY get that photo of him and her together? Anyway, enough of this silliness we could start to forget about the gold standard! Tis I who made the unfortunate mistake of mentioning the um, you know, the thing that starts with K, and I must be punished! I bow before your Greatness, while backing out of the room salaaming all the way and clicking... backwards.
