But please, not McCain/Palin bashing which I already know and am not impressed by. I need to hear the good that Obama/Biden have planned, not spoken in campaign jargon but in your words. All I've gotten when I've asked for this is attack as if I'm on the other side. Well I can see from both sides now, but I am not a Republican. To me, Palin looks like she's getting a bum rap from people. She's the focus not Obama's good solutions. That to me is a bunch of crap, and it could work against Obama in the long run because it turns swing voters like me off. As for the wolf killing thing, it appears the way she is able to do it is by a loop hold in the federal legislation, and the Alaskans are justifying it saying they are protecting other species that are on the endangered list: "In response to concerns like these, Congress passed the Federal Airborne Hunting Act of 1972, which made it illegal for hunters to shoot animals from a plane or helicopter. The federal legislation (PDF) does have a loophole for predator control, permitting state employees or licensed individuals to shoot from an aircraft for the sake of protecting "land, water, wildlife, livestock, domesticated animals, human life, or crops." (This doesn't just apply to wolves; coyotes and foxes are sometimes gunned down from aircraft, especially in Western states.) Since 2003, Alaska has issued aerial wolf-hunting permits in select areas where moose and caribou populations are particularly endangered. http://www.slate.com/id/2199140/ I've been reading about the polar bears too. Palin doesn't want them on the endangered species list because to do so would NOT remove the greatest threat to polar bears which is loss of their food source: endangered ice seals populations decreasing as ice melts. What it would do is make territory where the Alaskan people want to drill for natural gas off limits. As for the drilling... it is going to continue and increase somewhere on the earth as long as we are addicted to petroleum. And as long as we, you and I, are addicted, we are going to cause global warming which is leading to the death of ice seals and polar bears. Also, given that we are going to support drilling on the earth as we continue to use petroleum in our cars and houses, I can see how it would be in our national interest to drill here rather than depending on drilling done by people who are hostile toward us which is what we are doing now. Maybe if it was done more here, we would be quicker to look for alternative sources because we would see the damage being done to our earth unlike now... kind of like maybe if more people become aware of what happens to cattle, etc. they'll quit eating these animals, quit the massive killing and quit consuming the panic hormones of the death and mistreatment which can't be good for peace. I'm not here to debate and will wait for the debates to see who presents better concrete solutions. I would like to hear your understanding of Obama's solutions... not from the stand that McCain this or Palin that. I would really like to vote for Obama, but so much attention is on Palin, I get turned off. I'd like to hear how ya'll understand Obama's plan of action so I can understand and relate to it too. I've read his website and that long document he wrote, but it is hard for me to understand and pick out concrete solutions from there. There is so much info on his website, and so little info in the soundbites on tv, that it is hard to get a handle on it all. My support for Barack started with this: 1. He's the smartest candidate. There are huge complex issues now that need to be resolved and the person who can look at all sides of an issue, who is curious, who is confident enough to take advice from people he doesn't always agree with (such as Joe Biden)... take all that and come up with solutions, maybe brand new solutions!, is the person best suited for the job. 2. He is even tempered and consistent. Some people complain Barack is too cool, too cerebral... I'll take that any day over someone who's impulsive, makes decisions from the gut, gets testy when whatever talking point he's repeated as an answer is questioned, and who has shown his nasty threatening vindictive nature to many people he's worked with. Sounds like Bush. The description also fits McCain. 3. Because of his smarts and even temper, I trust that whatever decisions Barack makes (even ones I may not agree with) will have been thoroughly and thoughtfully considered. It does not bother me that it takes a little longer to get his answer out. To me that shows he's THINKING! 4. His temperament and common sense approach (versus a rigid ideological stance) has made it easy for him to work with Repubs to get legislation passed. Repubs claim Barack never has, and McCain always does, but neither claim is true. Barack worked with Senate Repubs on reining in nuclear material, on immigration (and that included working with McCain), and on ethics reform. In the Illinois senate he also worked with members of the other party, especially for health care for children. Those are my basics. Then I look at his issues and agree with those, so he really is my guy. Affordable health care, getting out of Iraq, assistance for everyone who's served, women's issues (and that's not just abortion, but also equal pay and other job-related issues), a fairer tax system, appointing judges that will look at the Constitution in the context of today's problems (it's meant to be an evolving document, not one stuck in 1789 when it was first passed), promoting alternative energy, serious ongoing diplomacy throughout the world (and that includes with people unfriendly toward U.S. -- which is almost everyone now), working together for common sense solutions! ... Barack has promised all that and he's smart enough and persuasive enough to get it done. Changing the U.S. toward once again being the country of our ideals won't happen instantly, of course, but Barack Obama is the man to get us on the right track. Those are my thoughts off the top of my head, Laura. When you get discouraged by the anti-Palin noise, please keep in mind that McCain surprised everyone with his VP pick so the scrutiny has been compressed timewise and may seem harsher because of that. Voters need to know about her, and since McCain stopped talking to the press in mid-August, and Palin has only given ONE interview, and very few people knew anything about her until she was picked, the press has a LOT of work to do. I put the responsibility for the way Palin has been treated on McCain, not on the press, not on the Obama campaign, not on Obama supporters. It was a slick political move on McCain's part and the more people know about Palin, the less impressive she is (unless you're a hard-core evangelical but most of them were going to vote for McCain -- or more precisely anti-Obama -- anyway). The whining now about sexism is not impressive. How much whining will Putin or any other tough leader put up with? Which reminds me: 5. Barack is running to be the President for ALL of us. He said when he first started his campaign, and in many interviews since, that if he does not win the presidency it will be because he has not made a clear enough case to the American people, not because of racism. He has stuck with that belief. After the Repubs had an ad with Barack on a dollar bill, Barack in his stump speeches mentioned a few times that he doesn't look like the people we're used to seeing on the dollar bill... and of course the Repubs jumped all over that claiming Barack was playing the race card. Not true. In fact, just the opposite... the Repubs are trying to get race (as in "don't trust him") into the campaign every way they can. I've tried to not be anti-Repub, Laura, but it's hard to avoid talking about the Repubs when what they're doing is the reason most people are looking closely at Barack. The Obama campaign is stressing the positive... and that filters down even to his volunteers... Gotta go. (NJC) Hallo, JMDLers...been getting into Loudon Wainwright III's stuff lately..... There's something I've wondered ever since I first heard one of his songs, "Aphrodisiac," from "Therapy" (1989). I am wondering if anyone else thinks, as I do, that the narrator's (Loudon's) affair is with none other than Shawn Colvin? The details all seem to fit, as far as I can tell. A meeting in London, perhaps, in the mid to late 80's. Here's the song, "Aphrodisiac": "He was checking her out at the sound check She was sounding and looking real good Kind of a cross between Edith Piaf and Little Red Riding Hood. She was young enough to be his daughter And old enough to have been around Good enough to blow him off of that stage And good enough to bring the house down. He said, "You must be my opening act" She said, "I've heard a lot about you" They made small talk about her direct box And all his record company blues. She must have gotten her dress sense From outta some comic book But he could see she was ambitious Underneath the waif-like look. On the showbiz merry-go-round It's so hard to snag the ring But there she was just startin' out A future next big thing. She was bound to be a critic's darlin' So he knew what she was gonna go through At first it feels like the tunnel of love But it can turn on you. And then you're runnin' a gauntlet That can seem like a marathon The next thing you're having your first come-back And you're wonderin' where you'd gone. Well, he didn't need a protege He'd seen "A Star is Born" But he was sorely tempted More than slightly torn. That night she got three encores And he got one, but took two. They had dinner back at his hotel And breakfast in bed, too. You know talent is an aphrodisiac And they don't stock it on the shelves And they say opposites attract But some people just love themselves. They said goodbye in the lobby The one-night stand had been enough He felt a little bit tender She'd been a little bit rough. But it hadn't been lust, it wasn't real love They weren't even hardly lonely It was more like lookin' for somethin' he'd lost And her morbid curiousity." _________________________________________________________________ Stay up to date on your PC, the Web, and your mobile phone with Windows Live. http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/msnnkwxp1020093185mrt/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2008 14:50:46 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Was Shawn Colvin Loudon's "Aphrodisiac?" I'm glad you are healthy and that you have caffeine again. I know, being a caffiend myself, that it would be a priority for me. Seriously, I'm so happy you made it through relatively unscathed and hope that the beaurocrats don't make it too difficult to put everything back together again. I loved our day at the statue of liberty and think of you often. love Cassy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2008 16:38:04 -0400 From: "Barbara Stewart" Subject: Joni covers (from UK Guardian) What are your definitive cover versions? Alan McGee ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/profile/alanmcgee ) guardian.co.uk ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/ ), Tuesday September 16 2008 15:35 BST For the past year, I have been investigating Davy Graham's enlightening and entertaining back catalogue ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuOQZqWzt1U ). Graham's rendition of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcrEqIpi6sg )is especially fantastic, not least because it has become, for me, the definitive version. Mitchell herself recorded Both Sides Now on Clouds, an album now considered part of the classic Mitchell canon. The song has taken on a life of its own, being covered by Star Trek alumnus Leonard Nimoy in a bizarre reading, Harper's Bizarre (who harmonised a light-as-air soft-pop version) and even Judy Collins (who was first to release the song commercially in 1968). A definitive cover is a hard feat, since precious few songs surpass the original. But Davy Graham's Both Sides Now has something that tells you more about him than even his signature tune, Angi ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ntdGoKj2gE ). Mitchell's version is pared down, on a straightforward acoustic tip; without the intricate harmonics that are Mitchell trademarks. She was inspired to write the song after reading Saul Bellow's novel, Henderson The Rain King, reflecting on the contrary nature of life. Graham's version really brings that idea to the forefront. By experimenting with eastern scale and modal tunings, he was painted as a rebel on the UK folk circuit, outraging purists with his ideas. When he released the jazz-folk fusion album, Folk Roots, New Routes, accompanying Shirley Collins on guitar, he was scoffed at. At the time, he was more appreciated as a by bluesmen such as John McLaughlin and Alexis Corner, but certain folk guitarists (John Renbourn, Bert Jansch) saw him as a key influence, sitting at the vanguard of what folk music could mean. During a trip to Tangiers, Graham discovered further possibilities for his music: grafting raga and a droning style onto a more traditional folk grounding. Both Sides Now stands out in the Graham canon, not just as a blues song, but as blues-as-raga. It's spooky and haunting as he starts with quiet drones to underpin the melody, before breaking into raga-rock. The singer's wordless tones mimic the melody over crashing cymbals, picking out the emotion with his guitar, building anticipation with mysterious stops and starts, before breaking out into a jazz-inflected, bass-driven affair as Graham's vocal delivery reaches a fiery, emotional and uneven pitch. Both Sides Now becomes intensely autobiographical for Graham - at the time heading towards an uneasy life - as if he'd written it himself. Its a hard trick, taking someone else's song and making it your own, but Graham achieves it. It makes my personal list of definitive cover versions - along with the Byrds' Mr Tambourine Man and Johnny Cash's Hurt. The colors here are noticeably more vivid than the LP cover, and it quite leaps off the page. I took some handheld shots of it which I'd be happy to share with anyone who writes me off-line, and is nice. If you see this book, jump on it. There is a gatefold black and white photo by Bonnie Schiffman in the front of the book, and numerous other b&w and color photos by Graham Nash, Joel Bernstein, and others including 'Mrs. William Anderson' and these last are presumably the childhood shots. Great pix of Graham and Cros...on and on. If anyone's curious, check out what used booksellers are getting for the folios these days. Go to alibris.com or abebooks.com and search on her as 'author' ....it's amazing. DJRD seems to be the folio in most demand (priced accordingly at $330). Even the Poems and lyrics s pulling down 3 times the publication price in some cases. Most sought of all are the exhibition books....'Voices' from the Mendel show is listed at $780 on Alibris; the 'Black Paintings' book almost as much. Don't know what to say, but I'm amazed. I guess we should hold dear what we've collected, and/or swoop in when something presents at a fair price. ... still looking for the Blue folio, and an FTR that isn't falling apart!" Now me: The flat art aspect of Joni's songbooks has always been fantastic. The quality of the musical transcription, has if you pardon the expression, hits and misses. I may be out of line in that I can't speak for the anthology books, my collection has focused on those books that corresponded to individual studio albums with the exceptions of yes, "Hits" and "Misses" (gifts from a dear friend) which I believe contain DULCIMER charts where appropriate. Beginning with "For The Roses" there was an attempt to give musicians what they needed to reproduce her guitar and piano. With the exception of the middle section of "Judgement of the Moon and Stars", one can accurately play the entire album. The system lapsed again for parts of "Court and Spark", notably the guitar notation for "Just Like This Train" and the center section of "Down to You" (for which I am eternally indebted to Dave Blackburn for his glorious, full transcription) and was choc a bloc. The standouts for musical accuracy are the "For The Roses", "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" (the complete "Paprika Plains") and "Taming the Tiger" books, but all of them do much to expand the visual reach of what was limited by the LP album gatefolds of the day and their small scale CD replacements. How very Joni. Chuck, I would encourage you to keep searching for that FTR songbook, but the weak binding was more common than not. I own two and both have given up the ghost. The DJRD also has a similar problem. Both books have an uncoated cover finish which I think has contributed. The C&S books however are also uncoated and don't seem to have the problem to that degree. Regarding the "Blue" songbook, the musical transcriptions are very disappointing making the book not worth the premium I've seen paid on eBay, in my opinion. The transcription of "Two Grey Rooms" in the NRH book is worth the price of admission alone. Does anyone know what a catalog from "Diary of a Decade" might be worth?
