I wonder whether you realise that in fact 2 of the 4 songs you listed were written by my fellow Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel?B Yes, not only If You Go Away (Ne Me Quitte Pas, as also sung by Nina Simone and others) but also Seasons in the Sun. That is actually the song Le Moribond, and again, in the original, much more raw and authentic and... well, I would suggest, not bad at all.B I just think it is a question of one style, one culture, not translating or coming across properly into another language or culture.B These are not pop songs, they are small pieces of literature, poems, cries from the heart written by a very complex, tortured soul living a double life (between Brussels and Paris,B one an uptight family man,B the other a pennyless artist in a rented loft). Anyway, if anyone wants to know more about Brel, I'll write more another time. Are You Ready for Love by Elton John That last song played on my car radio one day when I was driving with my son, and by the end we were both howling hysterically at the number of times that silly line (Are You Ready)is repeated without any saving grace of a melody. I keep getting the window that asks me if I want to upgrade to the new iTunes. I keep clicking Ignore - as I feel the old iTunes already has enough information about you, enabling them to make suggestions when you click to play any song. It's as though with every new application and techno-gadget we lose a bit more of our privacy. I know the songs you buy and download from Apple on iTunes have your own name (as well as other personal information) encrypted in them and this makes me very, very uncomfortable. If you share the song with just one person you confide in (and we all know about confidences...) then it has potential to be distributed to 1000's if not more people, all traceable back to you. So I don't know, maybe it's paranoia maybe it's sensitivity, but I don't like where all of these "new improved" applications, including the new Firefox 3, for obvious crass commercial reasons but also not-so-subtly eroding your privacy by "connecting" you, seem to be heading. - -- - -Mark in Florida On Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 5:59 PM, Mark-Leon Thorne wrote: > Hi folks. > > I was just playing around with the new iTunes 8. Now, the classic YES line-up of guitarist Steve Howe, bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White will launch the "In The Present" tour starting November 4th in Hamilton, Ontario, marking yet another chapter in the art-rockers amazing, 40-year career of legendary live performances. The three will be joined by keyboardist Oliver Wakeman, the son of YES Rick Wakeman, and vocalist Benoit David, a Montreal, Quebec, native and vocalist in several YES tribute groups, who was discovered by the band on the Internet. With a remarkable 40-year career that has time and again redefined the boundaries of rock, YES was formed in 1968 by Chris Squire and Jon Anderson, who shared a mutual interest in vocal harmonies and classical music. With drummer Bill Bruford, guitarist Peter Banks and keyboardist Tony Kaye, they became YES, earning a residency at the famed London venue The Marquee Club, where they played with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, releasing their self-titled debut album in July 1969. Guitarist Steve Howe, who went on to play in the popular prog-rock groups Asia and GTR and continues releasing acclaimed solo albums and touring, brought an experimental cutting edge to YES for their 1970s The Yes Album, their first number one album in the UK. Drummer Alan White, who had been hand-picked to play on John Lennons Imagine and George Harrisons All Things Must Pass, came aboard in 1972. YES then went on to conquer America and played at some of the largest paid attendance concerts of all time including the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia in 1976 to a crowd of over 130,000 people. YES postponed plans for a 40th anniversary Close to the Edge and Back tour in June, when vocalist Jon Anderson suffered a severe asthma attack and was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure. Commented Squire: "This isn't an attempt to replace Jon Anderson, because as we all know, that would be impossible. With Benoit, we are bringing in a talented singer so that we can go out and honor the music of YES for the fans who have waited for the past four years to see us perform." A dominant force in rock music for more than four decades, YES has created some of rocks most enduring and compelling hits, selling more than 30 million albums worldwide. The group has defined music history with their dynamic instrumental contrasts and abstract lyrics. Their symphonic use of sound and innovative musical styles continues to make them the most successful progressive rock band in history and their amazing career continues to defy many of their rock counterparts. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2008 18:06:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: NJC the worst song ever - --- On Thu, 9/11/08, Lieve Reckers wrote: > Hi Vince! > I wonder whether you realise that > in fact 2 of the 4 songs you listed were written by my > fellow Belgian > singer-songwriter Jacques Brel?B Yes, not only If You Go > Away (Ne Me Quitte > Pas, as also sung by Nina Simone and others) but also > Seasons in the Sun. > That > is actually the song Le Moribond, and again, in the > original, much more raw > and authentic and... well, I would suggest, not bad at > all.B I just think it > is a question of one style, one culture, not translating or > coming across > properly into another language or culture.B These are not > pop songs, they are > small pieces of literature, poems, cries from the heart > written by a very > complex, tortured soul living a double life (between > Brussels and Paris,B one > an uptight family man,B the other a pennyless artist in a > rented loft). Yep, we've had this discussion before. Both songs are so much better and so world-weary in French than in English. Many of these songs have completely new (and watered down, oversimplified and over-sentimentalized) lyrics when they're rewritten in English. Even when they try to make a close translation, something is always lost. Add to that the treacly arrangements and insipid vocals of a Terry Jacks (unfortunately, one of my compatriots and apparently better known as a record producer than singer, so I hope he at least produces well) and you end up with a song that sucks! There's another one that pisses me off, but chances are, no one outside Canada would know what I'm talking about. There is a poet/singer/songwriter by the name of Gilles Vigneault who is a living legend in Quebec and who wrote a beautiful song called "Mon pays." When you translate the words into English, it loses something, but in French, and sung by Gilles Vigneault, it's beautiful. There was an absolutely HORRIBLE version of it done in English that used the music but with completely new lyrics that had nothing to do with the original, called "From New York to LA" sung by pop singer Patsy Gallant. She had a hit with it in English Canada. Yuk. Bleeuk. Bleh!!! What a stinker, and an insult to the original song. I was reluctant at first too and didn't realise how it worked until I had already turned Genius on. Then I noticed that it was also going through my movie files too. It's kind of handy though. If it's turned on, when you play a song, it will tell you which other songs by that artist you don't have in your library and it will also recommend similar artists and songs. You can also view your playlist by album cover but I think that only works if you have the full retail album without any variations. It's too late for me now but, it won't be a problem if you want to use the new iTunes 8 because you have to actually tell it to gather all your information and send it to Apple before it goes ahead. You can just leave it turned off. There are a couple of other features that you might like. The new visualizer is amazing.
