I hope you all enjoyed Joni Live At The Sydney Opera House. Here is another gem. This was requested by Barry in Jerusalem. This is Joni Live At Carnegie Hall from 1972. It's really a fabulous concert. Joni was on a real high (not literally). She is in such a great mood and talks to the audience a lot. The audience, in return, is very well behaved and respectful. Like they really wanted to be there. Joni was previewing her new album, For The Roses and performs a lot of the songs from that album. I love this version of Electricity. She even explains the title, For The Roses. Thanks to all the generous people who have shared their Joni collections with me in the past. Now I'm sharing with the rest of this special community. It is a single CD but I had to split it in two. Here is Part 1: https://rcpt.yousendit.com/ 604813888/53ac354d0e3306d3e8e9bca8e3123524 and here is Part 2 which includes some artwork that I designed: https://rcpt.yousendit.com/604838542/e33b224dd59ab6cf8a520b39c8e0103c Enjoy. Could the creation process be reversed? Any physicists out there? Love, Laura Largest particle collider conducts successful test By ALEXANDER G. HIGGINS, Associated Press Writer 7 minutes ago GENEVA - The world's largest particle collider successfully completed its first major test by firing a beam of protons around a 17-mile underground ring Wednesday in what scientists hope is the next great step to understanding the makeup of the universe. ADVERTISEMENT After a series of trial runs, two white dots flashed on a computer screen at 10:36 a.m. indicating that the protons had traveled the full length of the $3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider. "There it is," project leader Lyn Evans said when the beam completed its lap. Champagne corks popped in labs as far away as Chicago, where contributing scientists watched the proceedings by satellite. Physicists around the world now have much greater power than ever before to smash the components of atoms together in attempts to see how they are made. "Well done everybody," said Robert Aymar, director-general of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, to cheers from the assembled scientists in the collider's control room at the Swiss-French border. The organization, known by its French acronym CERN, began firing the protons b a type of subatomic particle b around the tunnel in stages less than an hour earlier. Now that the beam has been successfully tested in clockwise direction, CERN plans to send it counterclockwise. Eventually two beams will be fired in opposite directions with the aim of recreating conditions a split second after the big bang, which scientists theorize was the massive explosion that created the universe. The start of the collider b described as the biggest physics experiment in history b comes over the objections of some skeptics who fear the collision of protons could eventually imperil the earth. The skeptics theorized that a byproduct of the collisions could be micro black holes, subatomic versions of collapsed stars whose gravity is so strong they can suck in planets and other stars. "It's nonsense," said James Gillies, chief spokesman for CERN, before Wednesday's start. CERN is backed by leading scientists like Britain's Stephen Hawking in dismissing the fears and declaring the experiments to be absolutely safe. Gillies told the AP that the most dangerous thing that could happen would be if a beam at full power were to go out of control, and that would only damage the accelerator itself and burrow into the rock around the tunnel. Nothing of the sort occurred Wednesday, though accelerator is still probably a year away from full power. "On Wednesday we start small," said Gillies. "A really good result would be to have the other beam going around, too, because once you've got a beam around once in both directions you know that there is no show-stopper." The project organized by the 20 European member nations of CERN has attracted researchers from 80 nations. Some 1,200 are from the United States, an observer country which contributed US$531 million. Japan, another observer, also is a major contributor. The collider is designed to push the proton beam close to the speed of light, whizzing 11,000 times a second around the tunnel. Smaller colliders have been used for decades to study the makeup of the atom. Less than 100 years ago scientists thought protons and neutrons were the smallest components of an atom's nucleus, but in stages since then experiments have shown they were made of still smaller quarks and gluons and that there were other forces and particles. The CERN experiments could reveal more about "dark matter," antimatter and possibly hidden dimensions of space and time. It could also find evidence of the hypothetical particle b the Higgs boson b believed to give mass to all other particles, and thus to matter that makes up the universe. Some scientists have been waiting for 20 years to use the LHC. ___ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2008 08:31:37 -0400 (EDT) From: "Jerry Notaro" Subject: Re: smashing subatomic particles, njc I'm with you, Laura. I say this because of the discussion about Palin trying to ban books. A good number of those books are already on "banned" lists for many schools. My question though is, don't we want to educate ourselves? Here are the benefits of reading: 1) You expand your vocabulary automatically by reading 2) You get to expand your imagination 3) You almost always learn something or get something out of it 4) You stretch the muscles of the mind....(yes I realize there is no such thing as "mind muscles" but work with me here) 5) If you're reading quite a bit, we know you are not in trouble! I could very easily go on.... Here are the cons of reading: 1) If you read a lot, it could be a distraction to you because you'd rather read than do anything else if it is a really good book! 2) I'm at a loss here.... Really honestly, banning books? In that case, why don't we just ban music too? Self expression is a dangerous thing and it could corrupt your mind. Let's get rid of television as well. No good. I mean, come on, is big brother watching you? For example, I kow Huck Finn is banned by some schools because it uses the term "nigger" and schools fear some may be offended. Anybody who has ever read that book knows the context of which that word is used. It was used back in their day! That was how they talked! It is a part of history. How about we quit teaching about slavery in schools? Some may be offended by the white man. Can't have that. Let's just wipe out history. Now some say the Harry Potter books are "bad." Of course.. It is a HORRIBLE thing that a series of books came out that pulled in thousands (if not millions) of children who normally don't read to actually read. And Lord knows that whole good-overcoming-evil story is all bad. Can't have it. Oh yes, and the witchcraft! We ought to start having witch hunts again....Salem trials? Let's try that again. Now The Catcher In The Rye (my favorite book by the way) is also banned by some. People worry it may "corrupt" someone's mind. It is a work of fiction. If you can not distinguish between fiction and reality, you are already mentally unstable to begin with. No book will push you over the edge (and if you think of Mark David Chapman who claimed this book as his bible, well it doesn't count if you already are psychopathic....if it wasn't Catcher it would have been something else, you know what I mean?) Banning literature is basically stripping peoples' freedom away. Fiction is a beautiful thing in which one can enter a world full of imagination while in they're very own room. I guess Big Brother really is around..... - -Monika ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2008 06:16:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Laura Stanley Subject: Re: Ike & Eliza Gilkyson (UK) now Jenny! Dixie, a 15-year-old ginger cat, disappeared in 1999 and her owners thought she had been killed by a car. She was found less than half a mile from her home in Birmingham after a concerned resident rang the animal charity to report a thin and dishevelled cat who had been in the area for a couple of months. RSPCA Animal Collection Officer Alan Pittaway checked her microchip and confirmed it was Dixie. She was returned to her owners, Alan and Gilly Delaney, within half an hour. "In 29 years of working for the RSPCA I have never seen anyone so excited and happy as Mrs Delaney," Pittaway said. "It made my day to return Dixie to her owners." The couple were "overjoyed" to be reunited with their missing cat after so many years. "Dixie's personality, behaviour and little mannerisms have not changed at all," said Gilly Delaney. "We don't think she has stopped purring since she came back through the door." The RSPCA hope the story will encourage owners to have their pets microchipped. Bottom line is the only Beatles song (and how I love the Beatles) that I do not like is one that I hate and wish it was never written let alone recorded because of its lyrics (there is not a damn thing good about its lyrics from any angle): Run for your Life. My only comfort is that John ended up regretting he wrote it. That is a bad song, misogynistic, violent, threatening, everything that is possible. So even though I find the other two songs rather silly, they are so acceptable vis a vis Run for your Life. There's a scene in 'All About Eve' where a very drunk Margot Channing (Bette Davis) insists that the pianist at a party she is hosting play 'Liebestraum' over and over again. Later in the film, when a sober Margot is sitting in a car that has run out of gas with her best friend Karen (who has emptied the gas tank and is played by Celeste Holm), the car radio plays 'Liebestraum'. Margot/Bette turns the radio off saying 'I detest cheap sentiment.' But unfortunately many people eat it up. Hence we have mega-hits like 'Honey' and 'Watching Scotty Grow'....and 'Color My World' which is toward the top of my list of stinkers.
