However, the fact that Palin's agenda considered banning library books in the first place reveals a lot about her, more than the actual list of books itself. Fascists work the same way everywhere, aggressively suppressing dissent, clamping down on information, branding works of art as politically subversive and always presenting a family-loving "what? do you think we are barbarians?" face to the public. However, it appears to be true that Palin approached the library director about the possibility of removing some titles from the library. Hopefully since then she's learned a little bit about the freedom to read. - ---- Original message ---- >Date: Tue, 9 Sep 2008 09:57:32 -0600 >From: "Les Irvin" >Subject: RE: NJC Library books that Sarah Palin tried to have banned >To: "'Joni List'" > >Unfortunately, this rumor is untrue: >http://www.snopes.com/politics/palin/bannedbooks.asp > >-----Original Message----- >Subject: NJC Library books that Sarah Palin tried to have banned > >So this is what hockey moms do at the office.... > >This is the list of books Palin tried to have banned. She is scary enough as it is. But I don't think that it is unfortunate that she did not ban the list of specific books. The fact that there is a list going around and around the internet world which her defenders get to say is untrue clouds the facts about her. That is what is truly unfortunate. Sorry again for the delay in getting my write-up out here, but I have had the tunes up and I'm happy to see that many of you have snagged them. In case you haven't and want to, the link to download this month's NEW release is at: http://tinyurl.com/5nvgd6 And a hearty thanks to Jerry for his assistance with this one. Like all of its predecessors, Volume 104 in the never-ending series of Joni Cover Compilations is a cornucopia of times, styles and languages. It is surely a testament to the strength of Joni's songs that they span the globe and the decades and the genres. All that being said, here's what's on Volume 104: 1. Chaka Khan - Ladies Man: This strong opener was much bally-hooed, and the album came out the same day as Shine. I'm in agreement with Jerry - I like Chaka's version better than Joni's, a nice funk groove added that suits the song and Chaka Khan-Chaka Khan's style very well. 2. Brian Sklar - Big Yellow Taxi: This is likely the MOST countrified Joni cover, I mean, this is hard-core two-step time. And the transformation is pretty good; twangy guitars, fiddles, and all the other Nashville devices get employed...to change the gender, he rhymes "screen door slammin'" with "woman" which is a novel. 3. Paradox - Both Sides Now 4. Paradox - Both Sides Now (Chinese Remix): Paradox was formed by 2 Hong Kong girls (Erica Li & Yvonne Lau) in 1985. This track dates to 1988, it's 80's easy-listening cheesy. They recorded both an English & Chinese/Cantonese language version, and here they are. 5. Mastaman - This Flight Tonight: It's certainly no surprise to me when a metal band takes this one on; after all, Nazareth has more fame with it than Joni! But to hear it done as a Euro-techno track is bizarre, and Mastaman gets bonus points for creativity. Can't tell you much about the artist in this case, but I can tell you this comes from his 1995 album called "70's Styla". 6. Mindy Gledhill - Both Sides Now: Mindy sounds very Sarah McLachlan-ish, and this arrangement showcases her airy voice quite well. Another recent recording (2007). Mindy performs around the Utah area so if you're closeby check out a show! 7. Banshee In The Kitchen - Captain O'Kane/River: A unique California trio, playing hammered dulcimer, accordion and guitar and featuring some very unique arrangements, BitK turns in a heart-breakingly lovely interpretation of River, combining it with 8. Tara Hoffman - Twisted: Tara is a jazz singer in the DC metro area, but she's certainly no Sherelle! I found this Twisted take a bit on the ordinary side, it should be a song that a vocalist cuts loose with and has some fun and compared to most I've heard this one is pretty flat. 9. Paul Anka - Both Sides Now: Not jumping on the BSN bandwagon back in the late 60's/early 70's like most of his peers did, Paul recorded his franchise take last year on his album "Classic Songs - My Way" (as in "I did it my way" which is one of HIS franchises) and I have to say that he does a great job here. His voice remains strong and clear and expressive. 10. The Chief Whips - Big Yellow Taxi: I like the rocking guitars on this one, they give it a big T-Rex arena-rock sound, but the vocal leaves much to be desired. From their 2007 album. 11. Al Pillay - Both Sides Now: Al is a gay cabaret-singer-entertainer from the UK who has dabbled in all sorts of things; music, TV, films etc. His take on the franchise is a bit too campy and over-the-top for my taste. 12. The Big Jump Band - All I Want: This is a bit of an odd bird - it comes from a 1973 demonstration record. The arrangement is akin to the one used by The Supremes when they recorded it. Can't tell you anything else about this one. 13. Kathy Brier - River: Those of you who watch the soap operas will recognize Kathy Brier's name & voice. She's an Emmy-nominated star of "One Life To Live" and her singing has been featured in many episodes of the show. Her voice is clear and powerful and she does a wonderful job with River - this one comes from a benefit CD put out by several daytime stars. 14. University of Nebraska Varsity Glee Club - Both Sides Now: Probably from sometime in the early 70's, this is your basic chorus backed up by your basic pep band. You know it's going to be corn when it's being sung by a group of Cornhuskers! 15. Liz Longley - Circle Game: Liz has a lovely and confident voice for one as young as she is. She hails from Pennsylvania and is a singer-songwriter as well. She does a nice job with Circle Game. 16. Tommy Korberg - Both Sides Now: Tommy is a Swedish singer, actor and musician who has been on the scene for a while. His claim to fame is playing "The Russian" in the musical Chess. His 8-minute-plus version of the franchise is rightfully presented as a full-blown orchestral theatrical performance. 17. Anna I - Big Yellow Taxi: From Germany, Anna duets on BYT and the arrangement is similar to the one used by Keb' Mo. 18. Cor Musters - Both Sides Now: More goodies from Holland - Cor is a Dutch guitarist, and this acoustic take on BSN is not flashy or showy, but very fluid and melodic. 19. Orla Murphy - Be Cool: London-based jazz singer Orla Murphy turns in a smooth take and definitely keeps her cool on this one, reminds me a bit of Phoebe Snow. 20. The Boys - Both Sides Now: An obscure record from the early 70's - these guys were likely from the Columbus Ohio area as it's where the LP was recorded. Besides some pedal steel guitar, nothing much to remember this one by. And that's a wrap for Volume 104...20 songs, 20 hits! The link will be good for another week, so don't feel like you missed the boat - go dig it.
