Hi Marian, I'm so glad!!!! Last night, my partner and I were one of the lucky few to see the new world premiere of the new extended ballet, FATD at the Banff Center theatre. It turns out that the Alberta Ballet had been offered a two-week residency to flesh out their short ballet into a full-length work. The gamble has paid off. I must admit I was somewhat sceptical at the outset, having seen the dance on DVD and thinking it was just OK. But seeing this new version, live, with the beautiful lighting and the full depth and darkness of the stage, brings a whole new dimension to the ballet, which is not easily captured by a camera. As Kate mentioned, the four new works are Shine, Woodstock(T-Log version), The Reoccurring Dream, and Ethiopia. The theatre is small and intimate; it seats about 650, and all seats were full - - a chatty, enthusiastic boomer crowd. The evening was prefaced by a welcome from a Banff Festival spokesperson, with warm thanks to sponsors such as Chevron Oil(!)as well as a short, largely inarticulate blurb from the Alberta Minister of Culture. The new ballet looks like this : TFATD - a sort of prelude - now done on a black stage without the curtain, since the company faced huge dry-cleaning bills from smeared body make-up in other theatres! Sex Kills - a very strong opener Passion Play - which revolves around a beautiful and athletic male pas de deux The Three Great Stimulants - featuring a triad of soloists Shine - a beautiful dance, which begins with the little girl in white, who is passed from the outstretched arms of one male dancer to another. The costumes are beautiful - all the dancers wear translucent, ankle-length burnt saffron skirts. Possibly the emotional high point of the evening. Woodstock - which begins and ends with a female dancer holding an earth ball above her head, while boys in military garb open with a brief war dance, while the other dancers grind their hips in an affirmation of life. Joni offers some of the lyrics to the to the song in the orb overhead. Part 1 closes with FTR, where a triad of couples waltzes through this romantic and lovely interpretation of the T-log version of the song. Thunderous applause after each dance. At intermission, I went outside for some air, and there was Joni surrounded by friends, discretely to the side, laughing and puffing away. People kept a polite distance; I suspect many did not even know she was among us. As the lights flashed for part 2, people began to file back slowly to their seats. I seized a split-second moment of opportunity to introduce myself to Joni, say hello, and shake her small and gentle hand. She smiled and we chatted briefly about the new pieces. She has beautiful blue eyes. A far too short, but happy Joni moment for me, at long last. Part 2 The Reoccurring Dream - set around a comical old lady watching TV with her cat at center stage , as the dancers impersonate all the different voices in the song - a very strong number. Ethiopia - a dark moody piece where the dancers impersonate animals under the hot african sun. Another knockout performance. Slouching Towards Bethlehem TBOBW IF I Had a Heart I'd Cry IF And BYT after the first curtain call. Much deserved wild applause and whoops and calls for the dancers, who are all beautiful, strong and athletic. They gave a wonderful performance. After the show, guests were invited to stay for a half-hour Q&A with the artists, moderated by Jean Grand-Maitre. He was accompanied by the lighting designer, a dancer, and JM ! Offered below are some of the exchanges between Joni and audience members, although all participants on the panel spoke about their particular perspectives on this project. How did the dancers react to having a non-dancer, Joni, coach them in their moves? They loved her support, energy, comments, and the subtext she offered them to understand the songs. As a nod and an inside joke for her contributions, it turns out that Grand-Maitre actually added one of Joni's personal exercises into the choreography - dancers rotating their hips with hands on their kneecaps. Joni recounted the story of her defective flat-scren TV as a cornucopia of art - - ultimately providing the images for the Green Flag show. Never one to shun controversy, she mentioned Bush, Hitler and Stalin all in the same sentence. She mentioned that the Episcapalian church is the only progressive church left in America - they have a female bishop. She spoke of her treatment by the music industry - how she is a long-distance runner, not the sprinter favoured by music executives. Finally, she spoke of our planetary war - Ecology VS Economy. Native tradition says we are now in the 4th world, which will end in fire. Our monotheistic and patriarchal religions are destroying the planet. We have to get ourselves back to the garden. I had a few questions for Grand-Maitre and Joni, which will wait for another day, since the curtain fell and the audience members left the auditorium feeling full, stimulated and entertained. A memmorable evening was had by all, I'm sure. I did not see any media present. The new show will be re-premiered in Calgary and Edmonton during the winter of 2009. There are plans in the making for a world tour. See this new show if you can. It won't disappoint. I don't know what my reaction were to be if I was put in a similar situation with Joni smoking across the room from me as I smoked away on my cigarette pensively. I do know that if Joni was not the internationally famed artist she is I would not feel hesitant or intrusive to strike up a beautiful conversation. But, for me, it's impossible to intrude the privacy of folks prone to intrusion and so many questions from all around. Once and very coincidentally, a few years back, while in Monterrey, Mexico, attending a couple of concerts on my old stomping grounds, I just happened to be a guest at the same hotel Carlos Santana and his band were staying at. I met several members of the Santana and Mana Bands downstairs at the restaurant and at the lonely little bar with the blue TV screen light always on. Well, one morning, I was at the open-aired bar drinking myself a Mexican cup of coffee which I love and reading some Teresa of Avila when all of a sudden the hotel lobby filled up with band members, groupies, roadies and star-struck hotel employees and everyone that was in the bar were removed and in comes Carlos and I got confused at the whole ordeal. It was just him and I since he had the place cleared out and for at least 30 to 45 minutes he stood there leaning back against a back wall and I just stayed at my table reading and not reacting to his presence nor looking his way because I had nothing to say nor do I believe he would have had any substantial thing to say to me. It was a show and the lobby audience were all watching us and it was so awkward and I had to leave due to the discomfort. Carlos loves the limelight and attention and I abhor it. He had a guitar pick sent to me to my room by one of his body guards afterwards and I got even more confused because I couldn't understand a damn thing about it and a "rock star" guitar pick to me is just a plastic piece of crap that means nothing to me. But after all this said, Joni is truly our kindred spirit with so much truth and beauty to share that conversation with her would be as natural as a baby being born, but I could never intrude due to my principles of respecting other's privacy and also due to my shyness. Truly, Jeannie PS: Carlos Santana and the Santana Band are awesome performers by the way. - --- On Sat, 9/6/08, Kate Johnson wrote: > From: Kate Johnson > Subject: Fiddle and Drum plus 4, and Joni attends > To: joni@smoe.org > Date: Saturday, September 6, 2008, 12:27 PM > From my friend who lives in Banff: > > "Last night, Elsie and I went to the Joni ballet, The > Fiddle and the > Drum at The Banff Centre, newly expanded to include another > 4 songs, > making it a full ballet. Wonder and delight! (I've never had a song or a beer named after me, so Patty Playpal will have to do.) When my family moved to SB (Hi Kate!) in 1966, she came with us in the moving van. And I left her at a Santa Barbara junction, with two little girls (Crystal and Carole) for whom I used to babysit, in that Summer of Love, 1967. Wherever you are, Crystal and Carole, I wish you all the best. Love, Patty Playpal NPOMTV: SNL, hosted by Tina Fey. The last re-run before the 34th season starts next Saturday. Oh, what a field day for the cast. Something tells me we're into something good.... P.S. I hope you can stick around. It's been sad to lose bright, funny people like Julie Z. Webb. Everyone I can think of drops out for a while. It comes and goes. It comes and goes. It comes and... goes. Remember when you were on the phone, all the way from Austria, and I was on Ashara's back porch? I was speaking too loudly, as usual, offending everyone else, but I didn't want to break the chain. There's an old rock song that goes, "Hold on loosely, but don't let go." Jim L'Hommedieu >I think I really do need to leave. But then that leaves us to use her self descriptions - barracuda and pit bull with lip stick! ha ha! I never thought I'd see someone more unqualified for vice president than Dan Quyale. Quayle looks like a major world figure compared to Palin. I also did not like her tone of voice in her speech - mocking, sarcastic. Interesting that she has yet to make an appearance on a Sunday talk show. The McCain campaign is not letting her have any unscripted appearances. Yeah, she's qualified... One reason I'm always referring to the Digest as a family is, in part, from the first line (that I find to be so perfect) of Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina"..."Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way". We are a family...a happy family but sometimes we have unhappy times...where people feel the sting of hurt feelings...when emotions run high over various topics...you get my general drift. And so, I'm very happy to learn that Marian is not leaving us!!! Welcome back, Marian, and I'm glad your absence was brief. You know, I read the Digest and have a myriad of feelings and thoughts in response to all that we share. There are so many times when I feel I lack the knowledge to understand many things...especially about the experience of our gifted musicians...but reading the Digest is sort of like a liberal arts education!...for me, at least. I may have a post-masters degree but my education is not well rounded...way too specific and there are too many times I wish I had listened much more in high school!!! Here's one thing that doesn't relate to an education or lack of one...I have no clue as to what makes a song "gay". I've never thought about the lyrics an artist has written as gay or straight...I hear the lyrics as sharings from the heart and soul of the writer....switching gears...I'm thinking about "Man From Mars"... Joni is so amazingly multi-talented and her poetic application to her lyrics and poetry leave me breathless. I often wonder what it must feel like to have such an abundance of talent to creatively express her most personal experiences...fear, being thrilled, concern for the planet, grief...and the list can go on and on...love and failed love... Why does being gay or straight have to permeate so much reaction to personal expression expressed to the masses through creative and artistic talent? Is there something wrong with me (well, duh...) that I still, at the ripe age of 58, still don't see color or sexuality or most anything to pre-judge about people. We are all so unique. No carbon copies, even though some of us have similar views. We all come from lives filled with different experiences and responses to those experiences. This doesn't imply that we can't feel very strongly about something...these days politics play a major role...the great thing about all four candidates is that I think they are each helping us think about issues that otherwise haven't been foremost in our realities. Here's a need I 'have to' express: it's about animals not having rationale/logic and not going to heaven or hell. I observe the immeasurable logic and rationale in my Poodle pack. This is more readily observed in animals left to their natural habitat. As for an after-life... ...different religions offer many theories...but, so far, none have been undoubtedly substantiated. I want to believe in an afterlife filled with forgiveness and overflowing love. I want to believe that I'll be reunited with beloved family, friends and animals!!! I believe in 'signs' that may, or may not be communications from the 'other side'...or maybe the process is that a particular thought reminds me of a lost loved one and I attribute these thoughts as being 'signs'. Switching gears...Laura, I also want to hear from all four candidates have to offer us concerning the enormously urgent problems we and our planet must confront. Regardless of party affiliation or what candidate resonates more closely with our personal beliefs, the issues are the issues and during political times important issues are brought to our collective conscious. But it's not all about what the winning candidate will do...what are we doing and what can we do???...individually and collectively. I'd love to know what Jung is thinking about our collective unconscious!!! Switching gears again...Kate, the story you shared about your dragonfly and how you're helping it made me cry. Oh I hope it heals with your love and you have the glorious experience of seeing it fly . Lori...Philly people...some of them...are really neat!!! Vince, I particularly found all the facts that you shared about Palin to be very important. I was having this idea all day...but I'm not going to express it as I remember all that was discussed about computers and privacy issues. Not fair...saying I have some idea and then not sharing it...it was about those of us from the Digest who share similar political views doing something together ... something...probably in writing...as a group...I think this is probably not such a good idea....right? I think I can read for a while and then finally sleep...with sweet dreams??? That would be novel! Love and be loved...
