The problem is the Western Cultural notion (and other cultures that do and do not emulate the West) that man's relationship to nature is that of conquest, rather than coexisting. The Judeo/Christian/Islamic teachings that are self-serving and would have man worship his own ego and espouse that man is somehow "nobler" than beast (other species) - the last I recollect, only man was allowed entrance to the various metaphors for eternal life aka heaven - help to provide a rationale for this continued plundering of the Earth and quell the cognitive dissonance about what happens to man's ego once death occurs. My knowledge of religion is very limited ... >>> Hey Mark, Nice post. But I'd like to add few. IMO, you can't blame the plundering of the earth to the religion. If the followers of those religions do plunder the earth, it doesn't mean that the religions let them to do so, it's just those people don't do what their religions tell. Again, I'm talking using my belief: Do not corrupt the earth after it has been put right. Call on Him fearfully and eagerly. Allah's mercy is close to the good-doers. (The Heights : 56) So, if people destroy the earth, blame them. Don't blame their religion. And about the other species... Yes, human is nobler than beast because human has something that animals/plants do not have : rationale/logic. But human can be very very dangerous because of its rationale, that's why human needs instruction/ needs to be organized/ to be told what to do and what not to do. Those instructions can be man-made or God-made. Yep, only man is allowed entrance to what-you-called the-various-methaphors-for-eternal-life (heaven/hell) because only human must respond the using of its rationale/logic to God (responsibility) (i wish i could find better translation!!). Plants/animals don't go to heaven or hell because they do not have rationale/logic, they only have instinc. Isn't that fair? Have a nice weekend, Rian PS. So Mark, if you want to give opinion about religions, make sure you know the religions to the core. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2008 00:40:11 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Re: Subject: PS22 Sings Circle Game So I watched this video this morning & sent it to a few of my friends & family who are currently singing in choruses (one of my best friends just sang at the Dem Convention before Obama accepted the nomination, what an experience she had!) Then I went to work with this song humming inside me all day (I have always & will always love this song). Leaving work lo & behold on the sidewalk in front of me I spy the biggest most beautiful blue eyed dragonfly I've ever seen! I grabbed my phone & was taking videos & photos until I realized something was wrong. She was whirring her wings (they are so beautiful, the finest most fragile lace- they are like fairy wings!) but she couldn't fly. When the wind picked up & blew her helplessly a few feet poor little thing, I realized I needed to help her & so I took her home. So now she is now living in, not a jar, but my biggest glass bowl with some leaves & hopefully some bugs are in the leaves & a bit of water. She is resting, I think she was exhausted (her wings are torn). I can't remember when I last saw a dragonfly. She deserves far for attention in the US than she has ever garnered as she did in her native England. And as for the issue of honesty in music, Joni no doubt is as honest as they come, but so for that matter is Kate Bush, she just has a bit of a more eccentric manner and her lyrics are somewhat more idiosyncratic - but her vocals are filled with emotion, and there is a real genuineness about them. So genuine at times I think it can be unnerving to the "average" listener, and even I have to give myself breaks from Kate's music, it really can be quite intense. I remember my mom saying, "You're not playing HER again!!!" Hounds of Love I have no quarrel with - a fantastic album - The Kick Inside, however, was her first album, and her voice at that time, kinda like Joni's at first, was a soprano capable of reaching all kinds of dizzying notes. I think any of the albums after "Lionheart" would have been better choices, but oh well... Yes and exactly why wasn't Rickie Lee Jones on the list?? Yes I too was startled by Bab's lack of mention on the list. In fact I reviewed it a second time just to make sure I hadn't accidentally missed her. I must have failed Gay 101. My knowledge of Judy Garland is even more limited that that of Babs...bringing into question my true sexuality again I guess!!! I think what it is with singers and myself actually, including Babs and others, is that I am mainly drawn to those that write, sing, and play the instruments themselves (I've never seen Morrissey play an instrument (ahem!) but I know he does write his own music, he is a talented lyricist. (Linda Ronstadt, a singer extrraoridnaire may be the one big exception to this - Karla Bonoff (whose songs "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me", "'Lose Again" and "Goodbye My Friend" were beautifully covered by Ms. Ronstadt, is another singer/songwriter in a similar vein I like. I'm thinking of one artist right now - Matraca Berg for some reason..."Back When We Were Beautiful"... who deserves much, much more attention (even from myself). Interesting also that all the musicians I named, The Smiths (Morrissey), Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan, and Tori Amso also included Joni as one of their biggest influences, with the exceptions being Kate Bush and Patti Smith. Yes even, Madonna, remember she practically had "C&S" memorized?? I often wonder if this influence culminated in her opus "Confessions On a Dance Floor" ...ok just kidding... I'll stop I'm being silly. - -- - - A very sleepy Mark in Florida On Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 1:52 AM, Mark Scott wrote: > > ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Angelo" > To: "Mark Scott" > Cc: "Jerry Notaro" ; "jon i" > Sent: Friday, September 05, 2008 10:16 PM > Subject: Re: 100 Greatest, Gayest Albums > > > 1 Kate Bush, > > Actually Kate has 2 on the list. I do remember the red soil in the pan handle of Florida toward Alabama. I wonder if that is where they get the name "Orange Beach." The sand is white there though, quartz I guess. The sand I have from the Clearwater area looks more like white coral. It is very light and fluffy compared the the heavier white sand from Destin. The beach in Destin is incredibly beautiful, and I've been to many beaches. They call that area of the pan handle the "emerald coast" because of the water looks striped blue and green and is very clear. The sand looks like snow with sea oats lacing the sandy hills. As you get closer to the mouth of the Mississippi River to the west, the water fills with nitrates and looks less clear and colorful but has many more sea creatures because of the fertilizer effect of the nitrates. Unlike Florida, we have all kinds of rocks here and are known for this. If you ever make it up this way, we should go rock hunting in the Hot Springs area and southwest of that where all kinds of interesting rocks including diamonds live. There is little soil and lots of rock. Lots of rock in Little Rock and to the west where the Quachita and Ozark mountains live. To the east is river delta. Funny day, looking for laughter and finding it there.... Yesterday I changed the "status line" on my Facebook page to: "Patti was NEVER a pit bull with lipstick!" My Circle Game son's best friend since third grade (and partner on defense), Jason, added a comment: "I was there Patti, and you were more like a mama bear, My dad was a junkyard dog and Mr. Cass was usually the pitbull without the lipstick....Remember when Mr. Bowne bumped chests with that snooty Simsbury Mom (she wasn't a pitbull, more like a Shit-zu haha) what great memories and fun...." Sweet and funny. Ah, those damn hockey games. And the seasons, they go round and round...the years spin by and now these boys are 30! I'm tempted to correct him and tell him that I'm a mama LION, not a mama bear, but I'll let it be. Oh! Speaking of this boy, I forgot to share that the last song played at my son's wedding was "At Last". I glided up to Jason in my thirties evening gown and said: "Listen! It's a JONI SONG!" and he shot back: "No, it isn't. It's Etta James." And I shot back (hit me with your best shot, fire away): "But Joni sang it, too, so it counts! So I have got a thing that's unique and new, to prove it I'll have the last laugh on you, cuz instead of one Joni song at this wedding, we've got two!" He shakes his head, and tells me that I've changed. Change can be good sometimes, right? Darn right. Love, Patti P. P.S. to Kate and BM: Did I listen to the children singing Circle Game? I *started* to in the ole workplace but then had to shut it down. The tears were already starting to fall like wax does on those church candles. I knew it would start the water works up big time and I wouldn't be able to do my best and good business. Anyone who would have walked into my office (that gets very heavy traffic these days, with some heavy company) would have been subjected to some Joni-ranting and the wedding song, etc. I'll listen today when I have no witnesses. xoxox! P.P.S. Speaking of the ole workplace, I was interviewing a potential student worker one week last summer and she saw my "WWJD" magnet. She said: "What would JONI do?" I said: "Yep. Joni Mitchell. Do you like Joni Mitchell?" Her eyes lit up and she gushed: "I LOVE Joni Mitchell! And the Beatles, and....."
