I haven't corresponded with much of anybody for awhile now but there was a time when I would exchange an offlist email or two with Marian. From what I know of Marian, she is an intelligent, warm and talented human being. For those of you who use the guitar tabs site, Marian was a major contributor to it. She has 'de-coded' many of Joni's alternate tunings for various songs and been very generous in sharing them. Maybe the cookbook thang was a tempest in a teacup. Not everybody thought so. But I do think it would be a terrible loss if Marian were to leave and I would hate for her to go with a lot of negative feelings. And I certainly don't think she needs to feel burdened with guilt. Spinning out on turns that get you tough. Not to mention the wars that don't seem to cease, and the crazy politics, et tout ca.... I don't mean to be preachy. Sometimes you'll see large rocks composed of limestone, but those usually have been dredged up when they have clear cut an area for yet another development. Well...obviously Florida is not the best place to be studying igneous or metamorphic rocks (the ones we had were samples - as well as the thin sections we looked at through the polarized microscopes to identify the mineral composition and thus the rock - those thin sections reminded one that even such seemingly simple things as rocks there is something of a breathtaking appearance and definite order revealed in the regularity of the crystallized minerals). Even as far as sedimentary rocks, which is all you would find in Florida to the best of my knowledge, you are principally looking at strata composed of limestone (Calcium Carbonate). Marble is the metamorphic form of limestone. Coquina is a rock formed from the shells of various sea creatures. The beaches of South Florida that front the Gulf Stream, are largely composed of pieces of shell fragments which have been ground down. The Florida Keys are largely without any sandy beaches as I recall, formed primarily of the remnants of corals, and as such having an extremely thin layer of soil on top of which the truly tropical trees such as Gumbo Limbo grow. The rest of Florida's beaches have sand grains composed of quartz, the most durable of the minerals that are found in granite, the weathering of which from igneous sources or metamorphic forms of it from the Appalachian mountains which have made it down to the southern reaches of Florida. Up in the Panhandle, closer to the Appalachian source rock, you often see red clay inland as you do in Georgia which I'm guessing is the weathered result of Igneous Granites and Feldspars, and their metamorphic forms. We did take a field trip to the Appalachians, and that was quite a sight (in terms of rock strata and topography) coming from South Florida!! BTW I haven't visited every single Florida beach, being landlocked as I am here in North Florida, so there may be regional exceptions I'm not familiar with and it's also been 24 years since I've studied the subject. (I am an ancient 48 years of age). Most notable me to was how many of The Smiths' albums were on the list, with a #2 and #6 mention, #32, #33, and Morrissey himself at #92. Morrissey is a huge Joni fan, Blue being one of his all-time favorite records, and doing at least one interview with Joni at his side that I know of. Indigo Girls coming in at #4 also impressed. 2 Patti Smith, 1 Kate Bush, 1 Tori Amos, 1 Sarah McLachlan, and finally 1 Joni mention - FTR (#99) is pretty good as well. Madonna only had one mention in the top 10, with most of the rest residing at the bottom of the list, which was refreshing. (I like Madonna's music to some degree though not enough to buy her albums, I especially liked her attempt at playing guitar, it was an attempt after all... - American Dream?? ...whatever... - her music simply doesn't give you "anything to feed and grow on". I've never owned a Bette Midler album, nor a Barbara Streisand album either for that matter, but Barbara's not being included on the list has finally convinced me I'm not a "closet" straight person. - -- - -Mark in Florida NP: Laura Pausini: Por El Camino On Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 11:34 PM, Mark Scott wrote: > Too heavy on Pet Shop Boys and Mad-dog-ga for my taste. As luck would have it, the owner was a) a democrat, b) tech savvy, and c) watching the debate. So he redirected traffic to a pre-existing anti-Bush site owned by Soros. Redirecting web requests is simple, there are a number of ways to do it, and takes a minute or two if you know what you're doing. But, the point was that Cheney believed he was recommending the factcheck.org site. I must also stand by my statement. Cheney may not be net savvy, but is anyone going to argue that the man is not politically savvy? No way. No. Way. Is Richard Bruce Cheney going to recommend some website on national television unless he believes that, at least on balance, it will tend to help republicans. I understand that factcheck points out misinformation from both parties. But, even before the Cheney thing, I remember they were a little too "fair and balanced" even when the situation didn't call for it. For instance, they'd try to balance a Dem exaggeration with a flat-out republican lie, as if they were equivalent. He said, she said. And they always seemed to miss the really big Republican whoppers. Maybe they've gotten better in 4 years, I don't know, because I stopped reading them after the Cheney plug. Also, one of the people mentioned in the About page, Viveka Novak (no relation to Bob Novak, AFAIK), was implicated in the Valerie Plame leak, although she wasn't nearly as involved as Bob Novak was. I didn't notice the absence of Babs! How funny, girl! Apparently she's no longer considered 'cool' in the gay world. Still I think if they're going to include Garland, they should include Streisand. They are, after all the grandmother and mother of gay icons! Have you ever seen their duet from 'The Judy Garland Show'? A very young Barbra starts off with 'Happy Days Are Here Again' and Judy comes in with 'Get Happy' underneath her. By the end of the thing they are both at full throttle and it is something else again! The 2 songs actually fit quite well together, both lyrically and melodically.
