It was unquestionably a case of style over substance - yet the style, so important in this "land of short attention spans", will undoubtedly resonate with a good many Americans. I've been thinking of whose distinctly shrill type of voice she seems to recall in me overnight, and I believe it is that of Karen Walker of Will and Grace fame!! Of course, she's not nearly as endearing...as someone put it "I can see why she lives in Alaska. She doesn't like people". I've read many of the comments on liberal-leaning blogs and of course the outrage over her mean-spiritedness, her attacks on Obama, her attack on the Democratic Party, "Coulter in a skirt", are all true, but they are preaching to the choir. I believe now that what the Democrats have been wildly saying was a "gift" that had been handed to them, may indeed be quite a formidable opponent. She comes across as confident, well-spoken (even if I don't agree with her positions), and is telegenic. Of course it was the roles of a former beauty queen as well as a newscaster that helped to instill this confidence and articulateness, but she possesses it nonetheless. I personally would never vote for a woman (or anyone) who decorates the interior of her house with her hunting conquests, sitting atop the remains of a bear which she killed for "sport" sprawled out on her couch for a photo-op. It shows a lack of empathy to me, very worrisome as she would be next in line to fill the shoes of a man who also has no empathy, or for that matter a conscience, and who also uses Jesus and religion to advance his own personal politics. There is something very disturbing to me about this whole visual. Her use of the statement regarding "those troops in Iraq who have now brought victory within sight" this many years after the manufactured for the masses "Mission Accomplished" stage set is laughable, also the Al-Qaeda !! (uh-huh) mention and the defeat-the-terrorists-over-there-so-we-don't-have-to-fight-them-here is way beyond tired, but one false flag operation in the next 8 weeks in the form of an October surprise will almost certainly have a majority of Americans in a vapid ill-informed rush to judgment to punish "them". I must say, however, that I found her speech to be rather impressive overall, in the sense of the *style* (as opposed to substance) in which she delivered her rhetoric given the low expectations created by so many disparaging news articles. I think her mix of nurturing "Lenscrafter Model"/Princess Caribou Beauty Queen/Christian Hockey Mom combined with agressive NRA Gun-Toting Hunter/Driller/Warmonger will actually appeal to a great many Americans, once again showing how we are still largely a nation of "hopelessly oppressed cowards, of some duality, of restless multiplicity". What a cognizant and yet sad statement that we have not really moved beyond that, over 30 decades later. Mrs. Palin, by offering up a son as sacrifice (in a shameless moment of exploitation as Bob notes) televised to millions in a invaluable moment of ever more propaganda piped into the collective American psyche, has injected a personal energy and commitment into this war without end, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out over the next 8 weeks. - -- - -Mark in Florida NP : RLJ - Walk Away Rene PS: Dear Patti, Yes indeed we all need a Hana at some point in our lives. This will slow down the inevitable process of finding and using alternative energy sources. . . whereby we will continue to erode the ecosystem. . the air. . the water. . the earth. More tax breaks for the wealthy. . I don't believe that the Obama Team will raise taxes for the middle and lower income brackets. She reminds me of Elaine on Jerry Seinfeld . . which is not a bad thing. .. but she is not presidential. I am curious to know her birthday. I will have to look it up. As a proponent of raising the piss out of taxes for everyone (I was just in Vancouver, BC, where taxes are high and the city is so clean and functional ... think those things are related? Your basic Republican thinks of Democrats as being "tax & spend" when the REALITY is that Obama will be able to offer tax CUTS to the middle & lower classes, something McCain does not plan on doing - he's content to keep the tax breaks with the rich, although he has had to flip-flop on this issue after the base pounced on him for speaking his mind and originally being all mavericky in his opposition to Bush's tax cuts. FactCheck.org is a GREAT unbiased resource and has much info in this regard: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/a_new_stitch_in_a_bad_pattern.html Tax & Spend is VASTLY familiar to Borrow & Spend anyway, which is what Republicans have given us ever since the Reagan years. It's crazy to me that Republicans continue to vote AGAINST their own interests, usually out of pure ignorance. All that being said - I was just in Holland and have the same observations as you, Lori. Van Tiel pays 50% of his income to taxes, but - his medical expenses & retirement pension are covered, the roads are pristine, the infrastructure is extremely sound and the populace is happy. Their attitude generally seems to be "none of us are well off unless ALL of us are well off" which is very refreshing compared to the American "I got mine, you're on your own" attitude. When we drove through a section that John described as "poverty", it reminded me of some of the NICEST areas of Greenville. At first I thought she was a really dumb choice (not her, the choice) trying to get Hillary supporters- which really underestimates the intelligence of women as if they'd vote because she is a woman. She is pretty far away on the political scale from Hillary. But now I conclude that she is an absolutely necessary choice of a very desperate party. She is a shot of youth & she has cute kids. It appears to me that the R's are now trying to imitate D's which is a good sign. She is needed because the rest of the party including Patti's P's nemesis (Mr wineyman ) are a group of old ugly rhetoric laden white guys. What was most interesting to me was the strange menacing facial expression she got on certain topics. BTW I am impressed with a woman who can raise five kids & advance a career like she has. Even with a supportive husband. I am not impressed with someone who can shoot a gun to kill an animal as if that is some measure of her toughness. But I digress- most importantly her speech was riddled with lies about what Obama is saying he'll do. I am not talking about what he actually will do because we don't know that. But she made up stuff that Obama never has said & the crowd went wild. My assessment of the vibe of that convention is that it is evangelical meets military industrial complex- core fear based POV. I am referring to the Republican's whining per the news shows and on cable. Yeah here I come flying out of lurkdom! I am a feminist liberal lesbian. I will not vote for McCain and never intended to. Having Palin on the ticket should NOT assist him with the women's vote, it should repel women. This is not history - the Dems did it more than 20 years ago - and Republicans were condescending and brutal to Geraldine Ferraro. Palin's being on the ticket should shore up and excite the conservative right wing if anyone. That speech was not her own words with the exception of a few personal notes and the hockey moms joke - which was pretty funny. Now while I realize every politician does not write their own speech - they certainly have input and guidance on how they want to sound and where they want to go with it. This was a dough nut filled in with a few spots for her history and family. I noticed how her NRA membership and her fancy for guns was not mentioned - quite a gal eh? This whole experience issue is disconcerting as well. McCain has no executive experience either having been a senator same as Obama and Biden ... does this make her the only person who is capable of running the country? Funny when two of our great presidents were running from a governors position, we heard how they have no international experience- well I think Carter did just fine - (Israel/Egypt) and Clinton had 2 terms - guess folks weren't so concerned the second time - maybe other good news made that issue fade away. Note - she has not even been governor for 2 years. I also do not think family should be an issue - but like Keith Oberman or one of the guys said last night - it still is a story. The women who spoke & cheered last night reminded me of an old movie - or at least the original version of - The Stepford Wives! Okay she is kinda cute ;-) My favorite comment was when James Caravel held up the picture of the Wassila town hall and mentioned how similar it looked to a bait shop in Louisiana! More commentary later - as I could go on and on and on ..... Funny for how much I love Joni and she has certainly colored my life - I always come out of lurking for the politics - sorry!
