The police are on the TV telling people if they are going to try to be to work early, forget it. They are telling people to stay home. We are supposed to get at least 10 inches of rain. There's not much lightening and no thunder in this storm, and the rain is horizontal so using an umbrella is a joke. My oldest son found a big leak around a window of our house where the rain doesn't usually hit. The eye is in Texarkana all the way up to Mena which is in western Arkansas. We have lots of people up from New Orleans and other areas of the Gulf coast. Wish we could offer them better weather. 'Born To The Breed' features the original writing and poetry of Judy Collins recorded by luminary artists such as Chrissie Hynde, Joan Baez, Rufus Wainwright, Dolly Parton, Shawn Colvin, Leonard Cohen and more. The album launch will coincide with a benefit tribute concert headlined by Judy Collins that will be the centerpiece of Joe's Pub's 10th Anniversary celebration on October 10th at The Public Theater. 'Born to the Breed - A Tribute to Judy Collins, Vol. I'* will allow fans old and new to explore the hidden treasures of Collins' own songwriting voice. Her impressive career has spanned nearly 50 years thrilling audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes. Volume II -- set to be released in June 2009 will be in conjunction with a concert at Red Rocks and a documentary to follow, fall 2009. The idea for this all-star tribute album came from a casual compliment Judy received from another iconic female singer. Judy recalled, "It started because Chrissie Hynde said to me, 'You know, one of my top 10 favorite songs is My Father.'" Collins continued that when she saw the list of people who signed on to pay her tribute she was more than a little flattered stating, "The list of performers -- I'm just blown away by it." The release of 'Born To The Breed' will be launched during the 10th Anniversary celebration of Joe's Pub, New York's most influential music venue, with a benefit performance on 10/10 paying tribute to Judy Collins -- legendary singer-songwriter, champion of up-and-coming artists, and New Yorker. Collins will highlight her history with Joseph Papp (in 1969 she appeared in 'Peer Gynt' with Stacy Keach on the stage of the Delacorte Theater in Central Park) by bringing many friends. Judy will be joined by Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, and Jimmy Webb along with Wildflower Records' artists Amy Speace, Kenny White and Ali Eskandarian, to name just a few. This event -- produced by Katherine DePaul (President, Wildflower Records) and Joe's Pub -- will be hosted by legendary WFUV DJ, Pete Fornatale and held at The Public Theater. The spirit of this benefit mirrors the philosophies of Wildflower Records' and Joe's Pub's mission statements of an 'eclectic artist-driven record label' and a music venue with a 'genre-blind booking policy' respectively. Yes, "Man From Mars", and some lines from TTT (the song) taken literally as Joni meant them to be I'm sure at one level (as well as larger metaphorical use the song speaks to), and the artwork gracing the cover of TTT, as well as the paintings on the inside and the photograph on the back, leave you with no doubt how important these graceful, beautiful creatures with quite a mind of their own are to her, and reflect Joni's sensitivities in regards to cats and that matter for all living things, a respect that has been consistent in her work, often revealing itself in her concordance with the native Americans, "ancient Indian chiefs and their old beliefs know the balance is undone" being but one of many references reflecting this. I also lost a beloved "soul-mate" cat of 14 years October 1st. Maybe it was fate, but Joni's return to music after nearly 10 years just before Chloe, my Ragdoll, died with the release of "Shine" helping me enormously during that period. I subsequently lost a cat, Sophia, of 12 years due to a tragic accident in March, which I made reference to awhile back in a post titled "And I thought of Anna wild and dear (TTT)" ..."like fireworks in the sky". I was out one evening watering my "jungle" and "I saw a plane go blinking by" overhead and Joni's music and lyrics about her beloved little "tamed tigers" played over and over in my head. Of course she references Sophia in the song by coincidence, a name I have always loved, the least of which because it is Latin for "wisdom", and Bob was gracious enough to respond to my angst-filled post at the time, also revealing to me - in another post - that the reference was to Sophia Loren, who used the analogy of a tiger in describing the realities of show business to Joni. Anyways I was under considerable duress in March at my parents' home and with my remaining "cat family" being forced to stay out on the porch, (and incessant yelling about them), I made a decision I felt was in their best interest to go to homes where they would be loved and cared for. Indeed, I found homes (cat lovers with large houses and yards that I could never provide myself, living in a 1BR apartment with a large private patio (for an apartment) where my Ixora, Heliconia, New Guinea Impatiens, a graceful standard "Anderson's Crepe" Hibiscus, an assortment of "unusual plants" such as Episcia, and "Knock Out" Roses (hybridized with a beach rose so it thrives in Florida's humidity as opposed to most Roses which are unsuited to Florida's warm, humid climate) - "where some have found their paradise, others just come to harm" refers to plants as well I'm guessing!! - ok that's obviously *quite* a stretch really but anyways... Sorrel, my 7 year old Himalayan whom I had raised since a kitten has created the most difficulty for me by far of those I found home for, as she was an integral part of my life for seven years. She was always a wild one. Scratching me 'til my hands bled whenever I tried to comb the mats out of her long hair (All of my cats were long-haired). So naturally the line "And I though of Anna wlld and dear" instantly recollected Sorrel, the tiger I always had the hardest time taming. Sophia and her sister Princess (my only remaining cat) were/are tortie point Himalayans. As you might expect, I think of Sophie all the time as her sister has the same colorations and overall appearance. Just as Joni felt awful, with emotions of guilt, regret, sorrow for throwing Nietzsche out the door - apparently the tiger she had the hardest time taming - I retain these same emotions for not being careful enough to check to see that Sophie was still in the car which was loaded down with belongings. The emotions expressed in "Man From Mars" about this episode are so revealing about how significant this transient loss was to her. She was blessed to be reunited both with Nietzsche (the reunion aspect not addressed on MFM) as well as Kilauren, whom she also writes about on TTT. Sadly, neither of us can find such solace in a possible return. Time and possibly a larger, different perspective on the matter are the only things that I can possibly see that will ever diminish the omnipresent emotions accompanying such a loss for myself. For me, I think the deaths become buried in our psyche at a subconscious level eventually, present but increasingly more difficult to bring into consciousness where they once predominated our conscious thoughts. I can't say that however about the loss of Sophie which was traumatic for me. It haunts me to this day, my emotional mind still overpowering my rational ("Apparently Normal Self") mind. I simply don't know how to make it go away. I've normally handled the loss of a pet by impulsively "collecting" more pets, in the hope that one will be just like that which I lost. Of course, the rational mind knows this is not possible, but the emotional mind keeps attempting to fill that void, and have almost entered the territory of "cat herder" at times I suppose. But something is very different this time, and I know I cannot "keep the pain laughing" by acquiring another pet - just yet anyhow. Still, it's comforting to know that there is someone such as Joni who is perhaps ultra-sensitive as I suspect many JMDL'ers and fans are about her cats and the rest of the world we find ourselves in, being breathed as it were, whose extreme sensitivities find their way into her music and lyrics and which provide us some measure of comfort, in that we can resonate with her same emotions and observations, that we are not alone in becoming unglued, uncentered, and ...let's face it...completely shattered with the loss of such a trusting, loving, non-judgmental companion that retains a bit of that independence of it's untamed tiger relatives. You are not alone in your sorrow and grief, I know myself and I'm sure others would be delighted in hearing about the memories you have of your beloved companion when and if you'd like to share them. "The silence is so full of sounds You're in them all" Wishing you peace (of mind) at this so very sensitive moment in time which can tear one asunder, - -- - -Mark in Florida NP: Laura Pausini - "Por El Camino" On Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 4:38 AM, Marion Leffler wrote: > On Sunday afternoon my cat died. Nellie Mckay does a great song called "Ding Dong" about losing her cat. It's cute and sad at the same time. Also, Veruca Salt does a very sad, dark, and heavy song called "Wolf." This one gives me chills with the haunting harmonies, plus the cat died accidentally by falling into a well. How sad is that? Mia < Subject: Man from mars On Sunday afternoon my cat died. Bless Joni for writing Man from mars. It's a comfort to know she knows what I am going through and for expressing it! Who else has written a song about the sorrow of losing a cat? So, as always, it's Joni who helps me through my darker moments of life. Sorry for bothering you with this sad news but I do feel you are my friends and I hope you won't mind.> _________________________________________________________________ Want to do more with Windows Live? Now: religion Hi Rian, Some of the ancient Greeks were aware of a sun-centered universe in which the planets revolved around. Aristarchus was probably the most notable, a couple hundred years B.C.E. The early/medieval Christians lost or destroyed much of history's scientific works. But we have the Arabs to thank today. They preserved a lot of it, only to be uncovered by the Christians around the 15th century or so. But this is just Western history I'm speaking of. Mia p.s. I think it's great to see your kind of posts on this list. In fact, she says, she didn't write any music, nor even touch a piano or guitar. "One of the things that made me quit was that I said I wasn't going to write any more social commentary," Mitchell says. "When I quit 10 years ago, I got stubborn with myself. I took a lot of flack. I didn't want to go through the experience. "I was mad at America. Come on wake up. You know, wake 'em, shake 'em. I just didn't want to be the one." But ultimately, she couldn't fight what was inside." Wake 'em, shake' em. GO JONI! GO OBAMA! There is my Joni song, for you: If you can keep your head While all about you People are losing theirs and blaming you If you can trust yourself When everybody doubts you And make allowance for their doubting too. If you can wait And not get tired of waiting And when lied about Stand tall Don't deal in lies And when hated Don't give in to hating back Don't need to look so good Don't need to talk too wise. If you can dream And not make dreams your master If you can think And not make intellect your game If you can meet With triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same If you can force your heart And nerve and sinew To serve you After all of them are gone And so hold on When there is nothing in you Nothing but the will That's telling you to hold on! Hold on! If you can bear to hear The truth you've spoken Twisted and misconstrued By some smug fool Or watch your life''s work Torn apart and broken down And still stoop to build again With worn out tools. If you can draw a crowd And keep your virtue Or walk with Kings And keep the common touch If neither enemies nor loving friends Can hurt you If everybody counts with you But none too much. If you can fill the journey Of a minute With sixty seconds worth of wonder and delight Then The Earth is yours And Everything that's in it But more than that I know You'll be alright You'll be alright. Cause you've got the fight You've got the insight You've got the fight You've got the insight PEACE, Patti P., who is up way too late in the studios and will have trouble getting up early on her ranch "If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." -- John Lennon http://www.imaginepeace.com/ _________________________________________________________________ See how Windows connects the people, information, and fun that are part of your life. http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/msnnkwxp1020093175mrt/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Sep 2008 22:22:10 -0700 From: "Cassy" Subject: Special TV show taping!
