As long-term incorrigible lurker and total newbie I felt initially like a gatecrasher at a party of folks whose friendship had been forged and nurtured over years of gatherings and close correspondance...but such was the warmth and welcome of all the attendees that that awkwardness quickly dissipated, and I felt nothing but a heartening acceptance and inclusiveness from everyone. The music was wonderful : riotously fun at times, inexhaustible in its varety and energy, heartbreakingly beautiful on occasion. The highlights were too many to mention (though I can't resist the effort of trying!!): oh, everything absolutely everything Dave & Robin touched, Midaslike; Barry's outstanding musicianship; he and Delene's polished performances (loved their BSN); Henning & Christina's wonderful celebration of the early stuff; getting to sing a few times with Christina (oh what privilege and thrill); Les Ross's spine tinglingly beautiful performances (especially 'Yvette'); the marathon Beatles-medley; Donna's passionate renditions; Anita's moving heart-shared sets; Bob's memorably joyous 'like a Rolling Stone'; Patrick's great great set of 4 songs new to me; Lucy's beautiful strong folky-voice (the unaccompanied ones were achingly gorgeous); Laurent's lovely song- choices and generous invitations to vocalists; Adriano & Licia's lump-in-the-throat final night renditions - so moving ; the 4 O'clockers' hilarious circle of bawdy folk songs and sea shanties; discovering that some of the best voices (Garret, Chris)had been kept till the end- crafty swines!!! What else? oh, the kind appreciation of my own efforts; the joy of bashing away at various forms of percussion, of singing out of tune harmonies without being told to shut up; the freely flowing liquid sustenance... But the fest was more than the sum of its parts, more than the music even: I feel I want to mention Lieve's sharp but gentle wit, Steph's patient spirit (and the ability to read while Rome proverbially burnt upin rock'n'roll); Oddmund's infectiously enthusiastic energy; Bene (my partner in The Lost Earring Band!)for the engaging warmth of her conversation and involvement; Bob for his tears (lager- assisted?); Chris (again) for uncomplaining microphone adjustment etc; and my fellow countryman Mike for being such a nice guy and (I hope) a new friend. Well the guy who got me there (yes you Mr van Tiel)promised me beforehand I'd meet all the friends I'd ever need. And cor blimey I think he might be right. I hope so: I can't promise I'll ever be more than a shadowy lurker in the jmdl...but I really did feel I'd met 23 extraordinary people I'd be proud (and humbled)to have as friends. For which, great and heartfelt gratitude... really! Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 19:16:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Monika Bogdanowicz Subject: Back from Vancouver VLJC Well folks, I am back. It was a trip full of ups and downs (more ups as the downs had more to do with the weather/circumstances rather than the trip itself). I am glad to see that those who attended the UK Jonifest had such a wonderful time. There really is nothing like sharing an enjoyable, intimate experience with those around you who connect to that experience in a similar (yet very individual way). Also, I send belated birthday wishes to Ashara. Anyway, I am writing after not sleeping now since Sunday night so I'll make it shorter than I normally would. We took an overnight flight Monday night to return back to Ohio and there really is no way to fall asleep fully on a plane. Now of course when we got home, we discovered the shit hit the fan and now have some personal, family matters to deal with. This has caused me a great headache (literally and I never get headaches) and much concern but I won't get into it. Overall, the trip was a success and I wish I could still be in Vancouver, Canada. We got to absorb the downtown atmosphere, the naturesque atmosphere, and the beach atmosphere of Vancouver. We also took a day trip to Victoria which as we discovered does not give us enough time to explore the area though it was very beautiful. Anyhow, we did the usual--Stanley Park, certain museums, a little hike in the woods, checked out some gardens, went to a blues club and a jazz club (both fantastic!), etc etc. At the jazz club, my brother said the woman singing sounded like Joni. She actually did do a very jazzy cover of Get Together which turned out brilliant. As for Joni content, I bought Mingus on record at Zulu's records in Vancouver. It was a really good deal and I felt proud buying a Joni record in her home country! Plus, the music stores had so many more Joni albums available in Canada than the U.S. Speaking of pride, I was glad to see such Canadian pride in the area. Maple leaves and flags were everywhere! I do love the Canadian flag and so I bought myself a t-shirt and a hat. So overall a very good trip that ended much too soon. The worst moment had to have been on the first day of our stay. Our luggage didn't arrive until 11 PM that night (we got to Vancouver at noon) and everything other than what we had in our carry on was obviously in there. My sister and I headed off to see Radiohead that first day and the weather was a little chilly (as it was our entire trip) but nice up until Radiohead got up on the stage. It then started pouring down rain and we were soaked, freezing, and very tired. The band itself was very tight but the circumstances were horrible. We first got a very good spot near the stage (it was an all standing venue which in my opinion is not a good idea) but had to move and some a-holes decided to start moshing when there was no room to mosh. Everybody was almost literally on top of each other, pushing to get to the front, and then some jerks had to start pushing around in the crowd and crowd surfing! Moshing and crowd surfing at Radiohead! I thought I was going to be crushed to death literally at one point and that is when we made out way slowly and painfully out of the crowd near the stage onto the lawn.....and of course the concert ended and we couldn't find our bus stop to get back home. It was the first day and we were not yet familiar with the area. and everybody else was drunk and stoned and didn't know where to go either which was no help to us. We got back to the hotel very late shivering without our rain gear since our luggage didn't come on time...... - -Monika ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 19:15:49 -0700 (PDT) From: M C Subject: re: jmdl cookbook no longer on ebay i'm just curious, what now of the flea market shop that sold the book and has yet a second one still on its shelf? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 23:27:21 EDT From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Re: Hot Dog on a Twinkie > I never submitted a recipe, but since I had been considering my 'Hot > Dog on a Twinkie' > perhaps that's for the best. > > Chuck > Not something I'D be rushing to try! I'm was just wondering what the difference is between this cookbook and any other book that's offered for sale by individuals (or booksellers) on eBay or any used book store. I suppose it comes under the category of original works (of "art") that were not originally offered for sale, like photographs. I've had some award-winning photos that I've given away to friends who liked them enough to want to display them in their homes. By my creation of the photograph, it's automatically "copyrighted" and I would have a good case against someone who made a copy of it and sold it without my permission. But, in the case of the cookbooks (or the photos I've given away), doesn't the current owner have the right to sell that piece as their own property if they choose to do so? It's not like they made unauthorized copies and sold them. Kenny B ************** It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here. It hasn't been so much heartache as just anxiety that all this personal information exists in a form that was being sold on ebay. It just feels like such a violation. Thankfully the seller removed it. Just for the record, I want to publically state what we all already know anway, and I apologize for being didactic, that any .pdf and Word files of the cookbook that have been freely shared thus far or that will be freely shared in the future are given with the understanding that mass production of the book for sale is strictly prohibited, that sale of a printed copy is also prohibited, and that these files are shared in good faith and trust that the recipients will respect this. There is much private information in the book and it is a violation of that privacy to sell the book on ebay or anywhere. Mags, I totally get what you say about the shock of realizing that things you've laid out on the list are pretty much available through a google search. It's mortifying really and part of why I have kept such a low profile in the last years was related to coming to this realization myself. I am glad for you that you are so much happier now. Thank you again for your message of support. It makes ignoring the messages that are not so supportive easier.
