Hello Joniphiles, Yes I am MIA from time to time - um ... sorry wrong post Cyndi Lauper?? ... oh "after"...well the wind is in ...not from Afrique....mais de Dominican Republic ... as I recall said wind was "birthed" in the middle of this continent,...ok technically on the fringes of the Caribbean, in the middle of our time on Earth...and yet one more 15 minutes claim to fame ( I don't have many left ) as we are in the eye of the tropical storm that is slowly moving it's way to the west at a somewhat unimpressive 2 mph. I saw one "Sable Palm" - can't think of the Latin name a este momento... down earlier tonight and a lot of small branches are covering roadways but mainly the concern here in "the swamp" is flooding...yes the swamp may flood!! ...Oh what does it matter? Oh yes home of Good Ole God Save America University of Florida...America's Number #1 Party School !! - as rated by Princeton this year - (excuse me ruling elite aka professors and administration of this corrupt cesspool) - yes that would be the same University whose regents condoned the tasering of a student into submission by their " Traffic Ticket" valedictorian University Police Department for asking the "wrong" questions of former Democratic candidate John Kerry - and the location of which journalist Greg Palast (the former BBC journalist) referred to as "One Ugly Place" in regards to corruption and the presidential vote, and which Naomi presciently viewed as one of the symptoms of a failing Democracy - not that we've ever really been one to be perfectly honest, and are in matter of fact incontestably a Corpatocracy or Plutocracy at this point...Oh what does it matter?? And to bobsart - who asserted like a TRUE warrior that Joni's line "Hiroshima cannot be pardoned" was one of her dumbest lines...actually it was one her most prescient, if one had to pick, as the only country to ever deploy nuclear weapons - the US - (see "The Fiddle And The Drum"), twice, set a precedent which continues to escalate - recalling Naomi Wolf and "The End Of America" yet once again - by continuing to deploy them by blanketing the Middle East with Depleted Uranium 238 - a nuclear weapon with a half life of 4.5 billion years which affects the young disproportionately due to much increased mitotic divisions - and sends our veterans back with the deadly Gulf War Syndrome widely known but of course never "officially" acknowledged to be caused by the explosion of DU munitions...the minute fallout which makes it into every breathing (and non-breathing) living thing through air or water...Oh what does it matter? This is YOUR happy home (right??). In fact I think her words: Sleep little darlin'! This is your happy home Hiroshima cannot be pardoned! Don't have kids when you get grown Because this world is shattered The wise are mourning The fools are joking Oh what does it matter? "Nothing Lasts For Long" as they say in Chinese Cafes... are perhaps one reason why she included the song "The Tea Leaf Prophecy" as the ONLY song her voice would accompany amongst all her compositions on the Grammy Award Winning Record Of The Year by Herbie Hancock. And as far as Joni's most honest song - everyone was quite thoughtful ... and helpful and hopeful ... and eloquent ... but one thing to keep in mind is chronology ... always penultimate with Joni's work ... recall that what brings her the most psychic pain currently is mans' stupidity (ego) and disregard for the natural world from which he came and whence he shall return. Many JMDL'ers...youthful...and even many of us subject to "The Hours" and "given some time to think" will identify with her lyrics circa "Court and Spark" and earlier in which she bled, lord knows I did (and do) and jesus did she ever bleed!! - who are understandably busy serving their ego's needs - and there are oh so many who want a repeat performance of that bleeding unrequited or whatever form you choose of human affection... but hey, it's not gonna happen!! Don't take it from me - listen to Joni herself - like a true sage she can see beyond the anthropocentric human ego, and it will be forever subjective, but if you are to ask yourself what are her most honest lyrics NOW - that is to say her most psychologically painful - - after all of these years they would no doubt be those abundant on "Shine" and for that matter in her earliest songs like "Big Yellow Taxi" which was a presentiment of of sorts, the inclusion of which on "Shine" is purposeful and almost predestined in a manner of speaking. Lindsey, that is so cool. Sometimes they must hear it from others to believe us. When we married, my husband's youngest son was in hs & he spent a lot of time with us- heard us talking about going to jonifest & was around when I was organizing my mostly annual tributes to joni. After graduating from UC he attended a music academy where he had some of the top LA musicians as his teachers. At one point they covered joni & of course they raved about her. He called me excited one day, telling me how much he 'got' it finally! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Aug 2008 16:44:36 -0500 From: "Happy The Man" Subject: RE: happy birthday Ashara Happy Birthday Girl, Hope you are well, and don't be such a stranger in a place where streets are full of strangers. And, I don't mean the first lady. I hope Obama has the vision of Fredick Douglass who is definitely one of my heroes. From all accounts, there are two women on the proverbial Short List: Sen. Clinton and Gov. Sebelius of Kansas. But, who knows? I hope he picks one of those two, pretty much for the reason you state. But more likely than not, he'll pick a white guy, to play it safe. And probably a conservative one, at that. Hopefully, I'm wrong. I felt it was cruelly ironic that two groups that have been marginalized for so long both had their first realistic shot at the presidency in the same year. One group will have to wait a bit longer. As far as VP goes, I frankly don't know why anyone would want the job. Its largely ceremonial. There are only two constitutional duties of the VP: 1) cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate, and 2) assume the presidency if the sitting president dies or invokes the 25th. Cheney doesn't count, since he has really been the acting president in many ways these past 7 years. And Bush's role has been the largely ceremonial one, more of a head of state than a head of government. But, that is not the way the two offices are supposed to work. Normally, the only real perq of office is it sets you up to run as an incumbent in 8 years. But, Hillary will be 69 then. Its still possible, I guess. Reagan assumed office at 69. But, realistically? This was her one shot. If I were her, I'd be aiming either for a cabinet secretaryship (Attorney General, maybe? Someone tough is going to have to clean up the mess the republicans have made of the DoJ), or majority leader of the Senate. Screw VP.
