It was so terribly sad. The following November I put together a 60 birthday gig/bash for Joni. You had sent JMDL the most eloquent and beautiful email entitled 'The People Who Love Joni'. I found it said so much for me and, I'm fairly sure, a great deal for others, too. It was not only about your loss of your dear brother, but also about the trials and tribulations and joys of sharing stuff here on this site, getting needs met - so much, really. Lucy read it out to the assembled people at Joni's 60th birthday gig. I know we've had a fair few discussions here recently about Joni's honesty in her writing and your piece, dear Mags, was very honest and true. I thought it so beautiful that I've always kept it. It sits in a folder along with all the Joni songs I try to play and so I still read your email'The People Who Love Joni' from time to time. It reminds me of you, my own losses and, most importantly, the power of Love. I am off to the Joni Fest here at Holycombe tomorrow and my folder with my Joni songs (and 'The People Who Love Joni') will be travelling with me. "Let me tell you first what I won't do: I won't hand over my energy policy to my vice president and not know necessarily what he's doing," Obama told the audience. "My vice president ... will be a member of the executive branch. He won't be one of these fourth branches of government where he thinks he's above the law," he said, an apparent reference to Vice President Dick Cheney's handling of the office. Hi Ya'll, This is pretty revealing. I won't be surprised if Obama picks a grey-headed, older man. I've got nothing personal against grey headed older men, I'm married to one. It is just that political strategy over change will be the victor once again. I visited the Susan B. Anthony house this summer. Wow... the vibes in that place. I learned change came for women not from the head so much as from the hearts of those who yearned for the same kind of freedom from oppression that the majority of immigrants had when they took refuge in this forming country. The heart of Susan B. Anthony's momentum came from a place I could not have guessed... her Quaker faith that taught all people are created equally. And it came not only from her mother but very strongly from her father. I regret that our country is still stuck in the "he" mindset so deeply. Sometimes I find myself saying "he" when talking about "doctor"... even though I broke through that prejudiced social mindset myself to become a woman doctor. My heart and my head are at odds when this comes out of my mouth. B Interesting stuff to discover these discrepant histories and what they contribute to dominant ideologies, no? B There is a lot that film textual readings can offer to view at history, identity and national formations. I know I am oversimplifying this, but the next time you seeB 'Once Were Warriors' (please please watcxh this film, everyone!) B or even 'Fargo' again, ask yourself what national/regional signifiers were highlighted and bannered and what were not given as much emphasis. And who do you think were the intended audience for these films..... B I got carried away again.... This concert is just fantastic!? Thanks a million for uploading this one.? Joni is just brilliant here, and the unadorned acoustic guitar playing is a real treat.? This was post Turbulent Indigo, and pre-VG8.? The version of facelift, IMO, is superior to the TTT version. I have fond memories of tuning into the live concert when I was visiting my ex in Manhattan, helping him get unpacked and settled with Joni on full blast.? And I recall being floored anew by her idiosyncratic picking style.? Truly a magnificent concert. Thanks so MUCH!!! It's just Joni and her acoustic guitar - she seems so happy she's just beaming, and the intimate space and jubilant crowd all add to the wow factor. The setlist:* 1. Refuge of the Roads 2. Sex Kills 3. Moon At the Window 4. Night Ride Home 5. Love's Cries (as she titled it then) 6. Yvette In English 7. Cherokee Louise 8. Sunny Sunday 9. Hejira 10. Just Like This Train 11. Happiness Is the Best Facelift 12. Song For Sharon Enjoy! (I know you will) And thanks to my friend who requested it - good call.
