She not only has the ability to write incredibly well-crafted songs that seem to be completely true to heart, she also has the ability to communicate those songs in performance in a way that makes you feel that she means and absolutely believes ever word she sings. To me, that is the essence of Joni's 'honesty'. Hi Mark, Very beautifully said. Makes me wish again that Joni would write and produce some movies. She's given us paintings, songs, and the ballet. It would be so cool if her songs could come to life in movies now, movies by album or song... and preferably NOT a musical. Ladies of the Canyon would be the first one I'd like to see. Then Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. I'm really dreaming here. If Joni can paint with paint, words, and music then cinema would seem to naturally follow as a further medium in which she could communicate, this time using script and performance of just the right selection of actors and actresses. Love, Laura PS. Thanks to everybody who has been so kind to me about my Raised on Robbery days. I never know how people will take me when I'm that open and honest. It is hard for me to come off the negative thoughts and feelings about myself from those days... which is what recovery is all about and is a very slow process. When you talk about honesty, Emmylou has a long history of displaying a remarkable ability to sing in a pure, beautiful, technically perfect (for her music, I ain't talking grand opera here) voice and yet communicate every word of a song as if she really, really meant it.b * Love Emmylou but I have to disagree about the 'pure and technically perfect' (although it is frequently beautiful). From Wrecking Ball onwards, and maybe before, and on some parts of Red Dirt Girl she tends in some songs to trail off at the end of a line and fail to enunciate correctly. Try listening to 'Can't remember if we said goodbye' and listen to how clearly she sings the first part of the lines and then to how clearly she sings on the last part of the lines. In my opinion, she does NOT communicate every word, although I do not doubt her sincerity. mike in Barcelona np b Bessie Smith b Blues Queen ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 2008 14:58:58 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: RE: All I Intended To Be - New Emmylou njc I've only heard it through a couple of times - my first impression was that it had more "country" sound than the last couple albums of hers that I've picked up. Joni mentioned this a number of times on the 1974 tour and recently stated that it was written for the final scene, where Warren Beatty's character is left standing on the top of the hill. List member David Phillips posted this bit of trivia way back in December of 1996, but the fact was never commented on by anyone. A year later, a great discussion of the song ensued (compiled here: http://jmdl.com/threads.cfm?id=2 ) but no one mentioned the movie. I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this song put in the context of the movie it was written for. More trivia: Joni has written (and had rejected) songs for at least two more movies. Willy was yucking it up w/ Colbert pretty good. And he seemed to have no regrets, Coyotes, about his treatment of Tricky Dick. LOL! And Colbert stood in for Neil. Too funnee! Pardonnez-moi if this was already mentioned. I'm still running behind the times. Oh, and yes! It is David Crosby's birthday today. 67. Carry on, David. And thank you for discovering Joni! (Although it was only a matter of time before someone else did.) I remember singing Happy Birthday to you two years ago tomorrow on the Freedom of Speech '06 tour. You gave Graham the finger for having us do it, but it was fun. And tomorrow is Bob Muller Senior's birthday. Bob, please send me his email address when you have time on your hands and I'll wish him an "oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day" again. Somewhere in your youth, or childhood, he must have done something good. xo, pp Freedumb/Dark Cafe Countdown: 158 days, 2 hours NPOMTV in the other (the little green) room: MSNBC, someone saying something about Jackson Browne suing John McSame for using "Running On Empty" in a campaign ad? _________________________________________________________________ Got Game? No great shakes, but it gave me a distinct thrill to see Joni in my newspaper tonight: "Herbie loves Joni With a little bit of help from his talented friends, jazz-fusion-funk- pop wizard Herbie Hancock plays selections from his Grammy Award-winning album of the year, "River: The Joni Letters," Friday at 8 p.m. at Bridgeport's Klein Memorial Auditorium. Part of Hancock's national tour celebrating his award-winning homage to the great singer- songwriter Joni Mitchell (note from pp: got *that* right!!!!), the concert features the keyboardist- composer performing with his band, featuring Chris Potter, saxophone; Lionel Loueke, guitar; Dave Holland, bass; and Vinnie Colaiuta, drums. Guest vocalists Sonya Kitchell, a Massachusetts native, and Amy Keys join them. The auditorium is at 910 Fairfield Ave. Tickets: 203-259-1036." I was at the Klein just once, to see Carly in the late 70s. That's when she still had bad stage fright but she did just fine that night, although we all could feel her nervousness. The article this snippet came from is here: http://www.courant.com/topic/entertainment/joni-mitchell-PECLB003234.topic On the right there are 11 Joni-related photos, but nothing new, I don't think. And there's one of Melanie, too, Jerry. Speaking of Melanie, I don't got a brand new pair of roller skates, but I do got a brand new key.... board! So I'm back in business. An emailing dervish, a little bit corny, a wildwood flower, wavin' for you. xo, pp _________________________________________________________________ Get more from your digital life. I believe the soundtrack for "Grace Of My Heart" was released initially with Joni's version on it, but they decided to use someone else's version in the movie, thus making that first batch of CD's quite a collector's item. However, as far as NOT communicating every word, I'm not sure I can agree with you, at least in an emotional context. The way her voice seems to disappear, whether it be because of a loss of her upper range or whether done for emotional emphasis is one of the things I found very affecting about 'Wrecking Ball'. The song you mention in particular, 'Can't Remember If We Said Goodbye' is almost too unbearably sad for me to hear sometimes and that fading out of her voice just makes it more so. I've never been able to make up my mind for sure if this effect came from an erosion of her upper range or was in itself a technique. I'm starting to like 'All I Intended To Be' more every time I hear it. I think she meant it to be partially a return to her roots, especially in view of Brian Ahern's involvement. I saw her talking about the cd on Charlie Rose, I think (can't remember for sure). She did mention that some of the covers were songs she had wanted to record for a long time. Merle Haggard's 'Kern River' was one in particular that I remember her mentioning. It would be hard to top 'Wrecking Ball' or 'Red Dirt Girl'. But I do recommend this new cd.
