She waxes lyrical about the wonder that is Joni Mitchell. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/saturdaylive The section comes about 50 minutes into the programme. Last week at 10.30am there was also half hour programme about Leonard Cohen and the love affair which led to him writing So Long Marianne. (Maybe that's been mentioned, sorry if it's old news). However, it was a truly wonderful half hour of radio and song writing and relationships and well worth a listen, too. It's listed http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml Scroll down to Leonard and Marianne. She also mentioned that Charles Mingus was like her in that he could sniff out when a performer is embellishing for embellishments sake and isn't being honest. I think most of us Jonilistas can do that for the most part but we don't think that were actually doing it. For Joni, I think when she writes, the words come through her, she lets them flow so when she has to sing them, they come from the heart, from the head. It is probably why Joni doesn't flutter about with her notes like some performers, no vocal pyrotechnics, they are more or less straight notes right until the end when she will vibrato. She will bend the note to change the emotion perhaps or to modulate to another feeling, but it comes from honesty and not showing off. That's my take on it! In terms of it speaking of a beginning of a relationship, it is totally enhanced with the vote of experience, starting with the very first line "I'll TRY to keep myself open up to you", as opposed to all of the wide-eyed "our love can overcome anything" naivete. And so it goes from there all the way to the end. Falling in love is very easy - maintaining a relationship is constant and conscientious effort. I don't mean to put a negative connotation on that. It's just the honest truth, and it's that same honesty that permeates Jericho. While there's a similar sentiment in BSN....bouncing from moons, Junes, & Ferris Wheels to just another show where you have to bury your feelings as opposed to finding the balance and making things work. You could almost close your eyes and point to a Joni song title and defend its honesty - such is the power of Joni's work. I hope this is not old news... The CD in question is Dave Stewart's "Songbook" which includes remakes of old Eurythmics and Dave solo tracks. Songbook liner notes Posted by: "dw_m@webtv.net" dw_m@webtv.net dw_m Fri Aug 8, 2008 10:53 pm (PDT) Well, after having come into some extra money this evening for performing a service (best choice of words i can use), i was able to pick up a copy of Dave's cd...am about to listen to it as i go to sleep tonight with headphones...just read through the liner notes - two things that really struck out at me... In his description of Missionary Man, he talks about the average activity around the Church Studios at that time as all-night jam sessions with the craziest combinations such as himself on bass, Joni Mitchell on drums, and Daryl Hall on guitar...record scratch sound effect goes off in my head - "Waidaminnit" i'm thinking - Joni Mitchell was Annie's hugest inspiration who i thought she didn't actually meet for the first time until the Grammies ceremony mid 90's - so Dave had her jamming at the Church and Annie missed this? I was pleasantly pleased and surprised to see that he referred to Platinum Weird as "an ongoing thing I have with Kara and I love it" which gave me a huge amount of hope that there will be more PW in the future! It just dawned on me today that it's actually been TEN YEARS since Dave actually released a solo album!! Yeouch - way too long! (That would be just as bad as a decade wait for a Eurythmics album...oh um, oops - never mind...) Man oh man would i ever love for there to be another Vegas album though!! To this day i would have to credit that album as in my top five fave albums of all time by any artist. I had forgotten (never realised?)Dave had four kids...when did he have Indya? Cool to see Sam and Django made some contributions to the album! -------------------------------------- d.w. mckim http://community.webtv.net/larynx1/UltravioletMUSEings/index.html - "Let me show you the world in my eyes" (Depeche Mode) http://www.draftgore.com - for the restored health of the country and the world ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Aug 2008 10:02:55 -0700 From: Russell Bowden Subject: Jericho Gang, Old American spiritual.... ahem...
