A friend gave me her album earlier this year and i have listened to it more than anything else since. It is stunning. I also had the chance to see her play live when she came to Dublin. As you say, her presence on stage is queity and unassuming yet captivating. I'm convinced that many people on the list would love her music. There are some songs on her myspace page and there is a Daytrotter thing floating around somewhere, but really, the album (The Pirate's Gospel) is a must have, i would say. It was sold out and i think there were about three guys there. It was fun. At first it seemed a bit corny and tacky, but the entire audience got into it. Lots of singing and clapping along, people dancing, groaning when Pierce Brosnan sang. I'll just repeat what you guys already said - Julie Walters was great, as she usually is. Christine Baranski (or Mary Anne from Cybil as i will always remember her) did almost steal the show. Meryl Streep. Wow. Am i the only person who did not know she can sing? And dance? Did you see when she was jumping on the bed? I'm about 30 years younger than Meryl Streep and there is no chance i could do that! Of course, it was probably a double, but i like to think it was Meryl. I was vey surprised to see it was directed by Phyllida Lloyd I saw the Dark Knight last night. I went in a little sceptical to be honest. The hype surrounding Heath Ledger's performance and reaviews saynig "flawless, perfect, best think since sliced bread". Well, it may not have been flawless and perfect but it was very good. I've never been a batman fan and, to be honest, Christian Bale's batman voice bugged the shoite out of me. Heath Ledger's performance was very creepy. When he was on screen i couldn't look at anyone else, even though i found him disturbing. Oh, and an add for the Star Trek film showing the classic Enterprise being built with Spock's voice saying "space, the final frontier". Nothing else. Joshua was Moses' successor and continued leading the Israelites to the Promised land. When they reached Jericho, Joshua was told (by God, of course) to besiege the city for six days and on the seventh day to blow the horns. The walls of Jericho would then tumble down and the Israelites could go in and kill everybody in the town and take the city for themselves. And so they did. Only a prostitute and her family were saved as she was promised in return of her spying for the Israelites. Cruel, isn't it? The Old Testament is full of stories like that. Now, as for Joni using the reference, I think it's because "the walls of Jericho" are a symbol for a strong defence that can only be broken by an act of God (the horns). I think she is referring to her defences against commitment rather than friendship. I feel the song is about the beginning of a new relationship and Joni is promising to herself and her new lover to not keep up her defences, to let him get close to her and to commit herself to the relationship. I saw Melanie play as lead-in for Jethro Tull at The Acoustic Festival of Britain the East Midlands in late May. I attended - a little skeptical, having not really heard her play since my teen years. I have a story about my BSN shirt too. I bought mine at Joni's BSN concert in Concord in 2000, was it? Very treasured souvenir of a very special night. Anyway, when our cat Oscar was still pretty new with us and not fully grown, he got stuck on a neighbor's roof one evening. I went to rescue him. I happened to be wearing my BSN shirt at the time. Bad move. Should have put something else on instead. I got Oscar off the roof but on the way back to our house, a noise startled him and he freaked. I was afraid he'd take off and I'd have a heck of a time catching him so I held on to him for dear life. The result was that he shredded the front of the shirt, not to mention the claw marks he left all over my chest and stomach. I was devastated and ready to kill the cat but I managed to control that particular urge. It's not like he knew what he was doing or did it on purpose, after all. I later got a replacement on e-bay. Not quite the same but I love Joni's clever front and back painting so I'm happy I at least have one that is intact. I don't wear it much these days, though. It hangs in the closet next to the 'Turbulent Indigo' and 'Taming the Tiger' shirts I bought at the Gorge in '98. This is tough, because in many/most cases we have not met each other personally, and, if there's a picture in the JMDlL Gallery it's probably a trout mask, or decades old, or a question mark.
