The geography we learned in school is not today's geography. Many of the countries formerly part of the USSR, I had never heard of before. Sad but true. And many other countries in Europe, Africa and Asian have different names now than they did then. And I had lots of kids in my class who were Slovenian but never really understood how that related to Yugoslavia. I had only a vague idea that perhaps Yugoslavia was a country of mixed ethnicity. Czechoslovakia likewise confuses me. I know there's now a Czech Republic but am confused about what happened to the Slovakia part. Every so often, I google names of countries and try to figure out where they fit in. - --- On Wed, 8/6/08, Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: And speaking of languages...NJC To: "Moni Kellermann" Cc: joni@smoe.org Received: Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 7:51 AM Moni, thanks for that - I'm real smart but there are some things I don't know and this is one of them. I had no intention of seeing 'Mamma Mia!' as I was never an Abba fan and the whole idea of a musical based on their songs seemed kinda dumb to me. But a friend I don't see as often as I would like wanted to see it and said no-one in her household would go with her and she asked me to go with her. Travis wanted to see it too, as it turned out, so the three of us went. I have to say the movie's a hoot! Silly, but fun. Christine Baranski and Julie Walters almost succeed in totally stealing the show. I can see drag numbers galore coming out of this movie. But the miraculous Meryl Streep seems to be able to do anything. She manages to make 'The Winner Takes It All' into a torch song deluxe and she is a true diva when she sings it. For me the movie was somewhat reminiscent of some of the sillier, more elaborate movie musicals of the 40s. It's just pure, silly fun. And if Greece, Crete, etc. look anything like the settings where they made this movie, then I can easily see why Joni was enchanted with it. There are a couple of shots of the night that look very much like 'a starry dome'. Very beautiful. Oh, and Pierce Brosnan will never get a record deal. Otherwise, most of the singing was pretty darn good. It may have been the presence of Meryl Streep and it may have been the beautiful Greek scenery. My daughter and I saw it on the weekend, while Matt was off taking kayak lessons. The theatre wasn't even half full. Most of the audience (at least 90%) was women, many of them my age or older and there were many what appeared to be mother-daughter combinations. Lots of giggly middle-aged women. I quite enjoyed it as it happens. Somehow, 20 years or more later, the songs sound better. Maybe because the arrangements were less saccharine than the originals. Whoever wrote the play/screenplay did a good job of putting the songs into a context which actually made some kind of sense. When Meryl sang "The winner takes it all", I will admit, my eyes teared over. She did a wonderful job of it. I agree with you about Pierce Brosnan's singing. The audience broke into giggle-fits when he burst into song. It's not that he totally sucks at it, but he's just not very good, and it's good he has other interests. He kind of stood out, not in a good way. Heh-heh. Loved Julie Walters and Christine Baranski. Had difficulty understanding time frames. If the daughter is 20, and Meryl got pregnant 21 years ago, I'm guessing the setting is the mid-90s. However, you'd have to guess that Meryl and her girlfriends were in their early 20s when Meryl got pregnant, so what are they doing in their late 50s/early 60s now? And how does Colin Firth fit in, when he's a good ten years younger than anyone else? Sigh. I hate thinking about stuff like that! - --- On Wed, 8/6/08, Mark Scott wrote: - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon Mackie" > Hey Jerry, kudos for knowing Christine Baranski. It's not a musical per se, but its subtext is how music bridges conflicts between countries and cultures. It's very heartwarming & charming. I love the subtle ways that music is used in this movie. When I heard about it a while back I had really been anticipating going to see it but I was actually a bit disappointed after having seen it. I was a big fan of the television show and used to spend Sunday nights watching Simpsons, King of the Hill, and X-Files. It just seemed though, to be weakly put together, had lots of lame, predictable, stock dialogue and the story was never really developed. All of the focus was on this pedophile priest and the relationship between Mulder and Scully but the overlying story was never really developed and seemed like a single episode that was stretched into a movie to double the length of what it should have been. Yes, the Mulder and Scully stuff was very touching and emotional but almost seemed contrived and/or manipulative. The cinematography was very well done and the scenery was pretty cool, a veritable winter wonderland. But the whole movie is about rescuing some fbi agent and we don't even have a clue who she is. And the whole rescue scene is about as anticlimactic as you can get... Victor, looking forward to seeing Batman this weekend in New Tampa! NP: Metallica "The Call of Ktulu" on vinyl!
