He, of course, had the advantage of being Woolf's nephew and had access to family members and friends that another author would not have had. He also had his own personal memories of Virginia although he was fairly young when she died. Another great biography of Virginia Woolf is Hermione Lee's book. Very thoroughly researched and a bit of a long read but well worth the time & effort if you're interested in Woolf. Braves games won't be the same without him. I'll miss hearing his voice on the radio, calling Braves games and adding in his sarcasm and dry wit. I remember one Braves game that was going on for like. 15 innings or something, and Skip said "I've had marriages that didn't last as long as this game." And he was pretty cynical about MLB management, saying several times how they'll probably wait till someone gets seriously hurt before they do anything about all the breaking/splintering bats this season. I think it's true that the savagery and gruesomeness and the complete randomness of it make this one hit particularly hard. In our wildest nightmares, we probably couldn't have dreamt this one up. And then you read about what a nice guy and how loved the victim was by all who knew him. In my case, I think, he could have been one of my kids, because he's about the same age. And now I read that the accused himself was apparently polite, nice, hard-working and so on, but just suddenly decided he needed to go out of town for a few days for no really clear reason. You wonder what details will come out about his mental health and we will probably find there were clues and a history that few may have been aware of. The person who did it is obviously deeply disturbed. I also agree that the media dwells on the horrific. I really hate to read or see the news because it seems it's always bad and I try to avoid it because I sometimes get too caught up in the nastiness of the world. - --- On Sun, 8/3/08, kjhsf@aol.com wrote: You are absolutely correct about the influence of the internet bringing into our homes the stories of personal tragedy from around the world.? This coupled with the fact that the "news" almost always dwells on the sensationally horrific or fearful in life has caused me to tune it out most of the time. But for some reason, this specific incident, maybe because of the brutality and savagery of the attack, and the particularly gruesome details just seems to hang with me.? My thoughts keep going back to it, trying to process or make some sense through replaying it in my mind.? Perhaps one of our psychologically trained listers could explain this phenomena--why certain images don't want to leave our psyches. The other impact of the internet is that it's also possible to access tons of information about the poor victim:? his blogs, family photos, etc.? You can glimpse the life of someone who's just travelling along as we all are, and is, just by chance, in the worng place at the wrong time.? Perhaps it's seeing that this could be anyone of us is what's so hard to wrap my head around.? Hi Bob! __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
