Pity about the weather. Tom Waits was a revelation on stage. He was chatty, funny, and has some great moves. He worked the audience and seemed to be feeiding off the energy of the crowd. He played piano, guitar, and, for a couple of songs, wore a hat like a glitter ball or a disco ball or whatever those things are called, that sent light dancing all around the tent. He stomped and crashed around the stage creating small dust storms, backed by his band including his sons. Tim McLean was on his way home to Winnipeg. He had spent the summer working out of town, on the road as it were. Perhaps the articles on the CBC website will help fill in some of the details. I've heard the stories and am sickened by it all. I do not understand what leads a person to such behaviour, nor do I want to.. Imho, it just goes to show that you never know what is going on behind wolf eyes. You are absolutely correct about the influence of the internet bringing into our homes the stories of personal tragedy from around the world.? This coupled with the fact that the "news" almost always dwells on the sensationally horrific or fearful in life has caused me to tune it out most of the time. But for some reason, this specific incident, maybe because of the brutality and savagery of the attack, and the particularly gruesome details just seems to hang with me.? My thoughts keep going back to it, trying to process or make some sense through replaying it in my mind.? Perhaps one of our psychologically trained listers could explain this phenomena--why certain images don't want to leave our psyches. The other impact of the internet is that it's also possible to access tons of information about the poor victim:? his blogs, family photos, etc.? You can glimpse the life of someone who's just travelling along as we all are, and is, just by chance, in the worng place at the wrong time.? Perhaps it's seeing that this could be anyone of us is what's so hard to wrap my head around.? Ken BTW-thanks for the download of that FANTASTIC Joni concert!? I've been enjoying it this week, and think its one of her finest performances since the Gene Autry show where I first heard "Facelift."?? In fact, that performace of Facelift with the acoustic guitar is my very favorite. - -----Original Message----- From: Bob Muller To: kjhsf@aol.com; joni@smoe.org Sent: Sun, 3 Aug 2008 9:11 am Subject: Re: Tim McLean, Oh Canada! Although she looks (uncharacteristically) unkempt in this snapshot, she's still a beauty, even after all these years. http://media.canada.com/f2c776c7-d458-449d-bcf0-aad47cf9b1ec/jonimit.jpg And on another subject, after reading Girls Like Us, I have to say Chuck Mitchell comes out looking pretty good. Although the author is clearly biased in Joni's favour, she doesn't shy away from pointing out areas of the narrative where the truth may have been refashioned somewhat by Joni or her entourage over the years, to portray her in the best possible light. I enjoyed the descriptions of her life as an art student in Calgary. This book also carves a special place for itself in the Joni biographies because Weller was able to interview both Don Alias and John Guerin before they passed. Their accounts, too, were fascinating to read. And on another subject entirely, ever on the lookout for the next great girl with a guitar, I was one of the lucky few who caught Alela Diane's first forray into Canada last night, in Quebec City. She sang her American roots/trad inspired repertoire solo for most of the evening, but was accompanied by a banjo player for a few numbers. She had a lovely stage presence, an impressive voice and solid guitar technique. She cast quite a spell over the audience, who stood by rapt for an hour, under the cool night drizzle of a rainy summer sky. Of course, they did very little initially and now the whole carpet needs to be pulled up, replaced, etc....I can't even sleep/hang out there as there's a big damp carpet in my bedroom so I've been staying at April's. Anyway....I was sitting there and it suddenly dawned on me that CSN was playing at Chastain ampitheater that evening. I had a wild hare to go, so I texted April and she thought it was a great idea. Six thirty and we were on our way to Chastain. I looked around a bit but there didn't seem to be many extra tickets so I just bought a couple at the box office which actually turned out to be great seats, just a few rows behind the sound board. Of course, right after we made our way in, a thunderstorm came along for the next hour or so we took shelter next to a storage closet. Lots of lightning and thunder and pretty heavy rain...eventually though, it subsided and people began to make their way in. Not a sold out show, but pretty full I would say. You're allowed to bring in coolers at Chastain so of course there were the people who go the whole nine yards and then talk through the whole show (after the 1st song, we realized the table right behind us was of that variety so we just moved up a few rows to a much quieter and more enjoyable vantage point. I love the way CSN just walks on stage with no flashing lights or fanfare and just start playing. M. Express was a great opener and we just felt right at home all of the sudden. Then Crosby mentions UGA (University of Georgia) and a bunch of people start cheering and several start booing (Tech fans)...Crosby says alright, control yourself or something and goes on to say, about this next song, that UGA did a study finding that 35% of women in the time period of 1969-1973 lost their virginity to this song and then they sing "Our House." Then, Crosby says that he and Nash have sung this next song 1000 times and that it's different every time, not because he's a jazz genius, but because he can never remember how they played it the time before, the song being, of course, Guinnevere and the whole place actually became deathly quiet, so that you could have heard a pin drop...which was great because it really is such a beautiful song. Crosby then said at the end, so you liked this quiet stuff? Okay, we'll do another tricky one... and they played Delta. After Crosby did "Almost Cut My Hair" I kept saying wooden ships, wooden ships, and sure enough, I heard the opening chords and "If you smile at me..." and it was just superb. They came back out for two encores and had everybody sing along on the second. A wonderful evening, from top to bottom.
