Hopefully Paz will weigh in on this as he is the jmdl authority on the Roland systems. You can use any electric guitar, but will need to fit it with a hex pickup, the Roland GK3 is the latest generation. About $185. http://www.zzounds.com/item--ROLGK3 Joni chose the Parker Fly because it was very light, under 5 lbs (some models weigh more), because she was having back problems. It does not come with the hex pickup built in. My experience with the hex pickup is that you want a guitar with no buzz on the frets-many electrics buzz a bit because the action is so low. The pickup needs to sense each string individually, and convert that signal to digital for the synth, so a nice, clean tone is helpful. Fender makes a "Roland-Ready" Strat with the hex pickup built in, and you may be able to locate one on ebay. New they are about $630. Again, check with Paz before you do anything~! So much ugliness happening in the world and even right here in Atlanta. I'd seen a couple of particularly gruesome stories and when I saw the headline "Local musician killed in Grant Park" I was just crushed. Back in the '90's, I practically lived at the Red Light Cafe, a local acoustic venue. I ended up running sound there for about a year and was one of several musicians who would play every week at the Wednesday open mic. I met Danny there and always found him to be incredibly warm and friendly, and a very talented singer/songwriter to boot. He will be missed by many. The major highlight was DJRD which I've always wanted to hear live - although it has to be said that Joni's voice was pretty awful on the first verse (nerves maybe, if she hadn't performed the song much or suspected the digital guitar was going to freak out on her). And it's such a shame she didn't include her lifts from the Star Sp Banner - that 'by the dawn's early light' on the studio recording is pure genius! Still, great to hear the song being aired. The Seeding Of Summer Lawns I particularly like her rendition of Shades of Scarlett Conquering on the piano with some chords that are either unusually minor to the extreme or fumblings - knowing Joni they are probably intentional, and very surprisingly Edith and The Kingpin - with just solo acoustic guitar and some overdubbing sounds very much like the heavily produced finalized version to my ear. Question for any Mac owners: I can only play the mp3's through QuickTime and cannot download them to the computer. It seems that if I upgrade to QuickTime pro I may be able to "Save As Source". Is there any other way of downloading the files as mp3's and saving them to disc so I don't have to continually click on the links? HI Mark I have been resting up just back from tour and not been on till now. I happen to love the VG technology and have been a user for quite some time. Roland makes a Fender Strat that has the GK pick up built into it. I have a rare one that is an American made Strat. Most of them are the Mexican strats. I also have 2 Parker guitars that I love. The Concert Fly is the one I love the best cause it only weighs 2.2 pounds. I had 2 VG-8's but just gave one away to a young friend of my sons who is an amazing guitar player. I have stopped using the VG-8 since I got my VG-99 which is totally amazing. The programability of it is so far superior to the old technology. I am having a ball re programming all the tunings into the new device. The sound is much better and more flexible. I urge you to go to a music store and check it out. I am happy to share my patches for either device should you decide to get one. Where are you in Florida? Perhaps we can have a mini fest and I can give you a live demonstration. I usually travel with the Parker and VG-99 when I am on tour with the band. There is a VG website that is very active and you can find used stuff on their email list. http://www.vg-8.com/wiki/Main_Page Best of luck. Right now I'm listening to Don Juan's Reckless Daughter - the song - and early on you hear a priceless rare and humbling malfunctioning of the equipment and the guitar chords thus produced. I'm assuming it's her Roland VG-8 that has gone haywire, but my question to those that may know is what kind or style of guitar (electric I believe) is best suited to produce the sound Joni achieves? A somewhat inexpensive guitar (used) preferably, as I've noticed you can buy used VG-8's on eBay for a decent price. I stopped playing my Alvarez many, many years ago as I became so frustrated - - and now a bit paranoid of continual exploding steel strings as I tried to achieve her many open tunings. I dabbled with electonic keyboards some for a year and I'm able to play music by ear to a large degree and was playing along to half of the songs on The Beekeeper by Tori Amos at one point before I sold mine on eBay in order to move. I taught myself much of music theory during that year, and a neat little trick I discovered was that by determining the last note that a song is written in, it almost invariably turns out to be the key in which the song is written. Then you can just hit random notes in that key as you are playing the song and it has a nice sound to it and makes you appear to know that particular score you're playing along with !! Anyways what guitar (at a reasonable price) is best suited for Joni's acoustic style - which in my mind changed to almost a hybrid acoustic/electric style to my ear since Hejira and the use of the VG-8? Also Ian related, after George Carlin died, NBC replayed the very first SNL (called "Saturday Night" at that time) in which Carlin was the host. The musical guests, who each did two songs, were Janis Ian, who performed "At Seventeen", and Billy Preston. The other surprise seeing that show was how incredibly lame some of the comedy bits were-although Carlin's pieces held up well. The very first skit is still one of my favorite Belushi pieces where he is a russian immigrant learning English, something about wolverines. I'm presently reading Carlin's "When Will Jesus Bring The Pork Chops?", which has some LOL parts, but still haven't found out when that will occur.
