Grooveshark certainly has no rights to distribute this Joni Mitchell bootleg and no one should pay money for unofficial Joni Mitchell recordings. Despite their claims to being legal, Grooveshark is not licensed to sell downloads of official JM, as they do not have a licensing agreement with Warner Bros/Reprise, Elektra/Asylum, Nonesuch. Indeed it looks like they do not really have such an agreement with any of the major labels: http://www.grooveshark.com/labels-list So if you pay for official Joni Mitchell, as you should, you should buy the music from a reputable dealer in order for some royalty pennies to reach Joni's bank account. And if you want unofficial, you should trade for it, but NEVER buy or sell it. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of studio16a Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2008 8:24 AM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: Grooveshark Joni in Ibiza? I have been listening to Joni's Minneapolis performance that Bob was so kind to have made available. Right now I'm listening to Don Juan's Reckless Daughter - the song - and early on you hear a priceless rare and humbling malfunctioning of the equipment and the guitar chords thus produced. I'm assuming it's her Roland VG-8 that has gone haywire, but my question to those that may know is what kind or style of guitar (electric I believe) is best suited to produce the sound Joni achieves? A somewhat inexpensive guitar (used) preferably, as I've noticed you can buy used VG-8's on eBay for a decent price. I stopped playing my Alvarez many, many years ago as I became so frustrated - - and now a bit paranoid of continual exploding steel strings as I tried to achieve her many open tunings. I dabbled with electonic keyboards some for a year and I'm able to play music by ear to a large degree and was playing along to half of the songs on The Beekeeper by Tori Amos at one point before I sold mine on eBay in order to move. I taught myself much of music theory during that year, and a neat little trick I discovered was that by determining the last note that a song is written in, it almost invariably turns out to be the key in which the song is written. Then you can just hit random notes in that key as you are playing the song and it has a nice sound to it and makes you appear to know that particular score you're playing along with !! Anyways what guitar (at a reasonable price) is best suited for Joni's acoustic style - which in my mind changed to almost a hybrid acoustic/electric style to my ear since Hejira and the use of the VG-8? Thanks. - -- - -Mark in Florida ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2008 15:11:46 -0400 From: Victor Johnson Subject: Re: NJC: Guitar best suited for Roland VG-8? Kate I did get them all right, but if I had missed two, those would've been the two I would've missed. I was a big fan of the Police, but that was never a memorable guitar solo to me. And the Jane's Addiction I wouldn't have guessed in a million years except by process of elimination on a multiple choice quiz. I was never "in to" them. I didn't not like them, I just wasn't into 'em. I was able to get the Police one right, though, because of Stu Copeland's drums. Which left Jane's Addiction. Ta da. It helped that most of them were FM radio played to death a million times and then played some more songs. And Bob, yes I did catch that Eddie Van Halen was on the list twice. I'd forgotton that he did the solo on Beat It. I was aware of the fact when the song came out, since I was a huge Van Halen fan at the time. I was a 15 year old boy in 1982 so it kind of went with the territory. Along with AC/DC, Rush, and Pink Floyd. I basically was Beavis. That show could've been a documentary. I'm telling you, that sh*t was real, man!
