Jay was in the film SHORTBUS, by John Cameron Mitchell, if you haven't seen that, you all need to. It's brilliant. Now I'm excited, not only because he sang a Joni song, but because someone other than us has actually heard of him and went to see him and liked him. How was the opener, Annie Strela? She is the opener, right ? ~Richard Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2008 03:03:27 -0700 From: David Marine Subject: Jay Brannan NJC Hey List, I just saw jay Brannan at the El Rey in Los Angeles. He will be playing the bay area tomorrow (Wednesday), and continue up the coast. I knew little of his music before, but the show was great, and included a fantastic cover of "All I Want". For those who might want to check him out, he has a lot of videos on youtube. Anyway, heads up to those on the west coast who might want to see him perform. What are heirs for, then? All this talk of Death and Funerals makes me offer a plug for one of the funniest movies I've seen in a decade, "Death at a Funeral." I highly recommend it, for full out belly laughs. I got my hands on some tracks of his and liked them. Plus he is very pretty (which is not at all relevant to his music, but he really is very nice to look at) . I would love to hear his take on All I Want. Shortbus is good, Richard, not at all what i expected. Last night I was multi-tasking while the Colbert Report was on. I *thought* I heard him say "Joni Mitchell". Say what? Sure enough, he did! He showed a Joni album, too." Google time! It was a Starbucks satire. Shine on Harvest Moon, Kate! I am in love with that song, too. Beautiful. Or, in a non-Joni take: Shine on, harvest moon. Remember that oldie? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfa3qTZinPQ&feature=related (But remember what Joni said: Beware of the power of moons! LOL....don't say she didn't warn ya!) Catherine, those sad gravestones -- oops, I mean granite markers -- of the two siblings? Ach du Lieber. I have dear friends, a retired German professor and his retired librarian wife (hi Jerry and Deb and Barbara and Martha), who lost their two teen-aged daughters (yes, BOTH of them) in a car accident. They were visiting family in Florida. The girls were on their way back to grandma's to pick up gear for a sleep-over. They never arrived. After a half an hour or so, the parents just "knew". They were waiting in the driveway for two hours for the police to deliver the news. Later, their mother, in the hospital, begged to see them. They finally let her in and unzipped the body bags. All Peg had to see was their hands: their grandmother had just given them manicures. She said: "Plus, every mother knows their child's hands." I did not know them when this happened in the 80s, but they told me they had "Let It Be" for the recessional. These are two of the sweetest and most spiritual and loving people I know. I don't know how they go on, but they do. What did Ernest Hemingway write? Something like "Life breaks us all, and some of us grown stronger in the broken places." Let it be, let it be. And Sue, I love that song! How beautiful that it comforted your grandmother. Good on you both. Be not afraid, I go before you always, Come follow Me, and I shall give you rest. Blessed are your poor, for the Kingdom shall be theirs. Blest are you that weep and mourn, for one day you shall laugh. And if wicked men insult and hate you, all because of Me, blessed, blessed are you! It has special meaning for me, too. On one of the darkest days of my life, all emotions and abstractions and tears and fears (and not feeling proud at all), I stopped into church for two minutes for some solace and support and peace. I was on my way to divorce court. (Ha. Wait for the book.) A group of people were singing that song and it got me through that day, and many days after that. (Right now it strikes me as kind of "IF"-y. Just a little JMOCD kickin' in, I guess!) Music. Sweet music. As for "Let it be," there was a young man who died of cancer when I was in high school. His sister was in my class. I think our entire school went to his funeral. He had wanted "Let it be" to be played at his funeral, but the church wouldn't allow it. Shine on the Catholic church, because it really needs to find its heart. - --- On Thu, 7/24/08, Patti Parlette wrote: I did not know them when this happened in the 80s, but they told me they had "Let It Be" for the recessional.
