My mom, who chose cremation, never could decide whether she wanted us to scatter her ashes on land or the sea (so I won't tell you what we did because it is not what you are supposed to do). There was a park near her home overlooking the ocean, where we held so many of our family gatherings. was able to secure a spot where we had a bench installed in her name. Nice to have a place, either just thinking about it, or actually going there, to remember her. I like it much better than a hole in the ground. My father was cremated but he had a tiny cemetary plot. However, we kept part of the ashes to casually and surreptiously scatter at the San Carlos Borromeo (his name and the saint he was named after) Mission in Carmel, Ca. where he lived when he and my mother were first married and stationed at Fort Ord in Monterey during WWII. There is a gorgeous painting he painted of the mission during that time that I am now having restored. He really wanted his ashes scattered there but no way we can work that out "officially." So I promised him my mom and I would just make a visit and scatter some of his ashes in the garden there as we were walking through. We still need to do that. I also have a "plot" for my ashes but would like some scattered on my California Islands or Hawaii. It's hard to think of music. I wouldn't want anything grand. Simple is more beautiful for me. Maybe Joni's Song to a Seagull and that is it. Kakki, going to my beloved Hawaii next week! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2008 02:58:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Death and Funeral music NJC Yes, I have picked up on that - and it goes both ways, I love my JMDL family too. Both of these kids died on the same day 15 or so years ago, so it must have been a car accident or something. The other marker is there waiting for their parents (birth dates are on, but not death dates.) There are always flowers or mementos on these graves and a little Christmas tree at Christmas. Now I'm getting all weepy just thinking about this, so thanks a lot whoever started this thread! - --- On Wed, 7/23/08, Mike Pritchard wrote: From: Mike Pritchard Subject: RE: Death and Funeral music NJC To: "list" Received: Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 4:20 AM >>I was just walking in a nearby graveyard with my son, and we saw three sets of markers for old couples who died within months of each other.<< Spookiest thing I ever saw was in a graveyard in Lisbon, Portugal where there was a headstone for a sea captain who was killed in a battle off the Portuguese coast. And while we're talking about Zombie movies, "Shaun Of The Dead" is one of the most brilliant films you'll ever see. At our age getting eaten by anything sounds pretty good. Actually I think that in that dead state you're not really feeling much pain either way...reminds me of the late George Carlin's riff on funerals, the part where you have to walk past the open casket and look at the dead body. When he was passing by, the lady next to him says "doesn't he look good?", to which Carlin responds "GOOD?!?!?! He's DEAD!!" This made me LOL, and of course brought to mind the scene in Monty Python & the Holy Grail ("I'm not dead yet - I feel happy!") which was made into a full-blown musical number in Spamalot. Can't think of any other off the top of my head that fits so well. Great story, also, about why Joni refused to sing the song in the movie (they got a look-alike to stand in for her). It was basically about Joni not being willing to give up her rights to the song. She's an awesome business woman. In a former life I was the Director of Music at my church and I would lead a folk group and we occasionally played at funerals. My favorite to play was "Be Not Afraid." You can find it in most folk hymnals. I also played it at my grandfather's funeral and my grandmother came up to me afterward and said "That song took all the grief out of me." "A man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding. When it is not, he takes his mind off his own meaningless affairs by minding other people's business." -Eric Hoffer, philosopher and author There is a very large minority of people in the USA that are apparently not satisfied with their own "meaningless affairs" so they have nobly and selflessly taken it upon themselves to mind the rest of our business for us. Well, that's certainly a load off my mind. I'm sure Dobson and the other Ayatollahs on the Christian Right* ordered many of those half-million complaints. But, one of the guys that led the charge against Janet Jackson's right nipple was L. Brent Bozell III, through his group the Parent's Television Council. He has also founded the Media Research Center, and other organizations. All of these organizations have roughly the same mission: making sure that all media broadcasts everywhere conform to Brent Bozell's narrow range of acceptability. He's not part of the religious right per se, but he's closely allied with them on this issue: anti-free speech. He's an exceptionally well pedigreed conservative. His father, L. Brent Bozell, Jr., was William Buckley's brother-in-law, co-wrote "Conscience of a Conservative" with Barry Goldwater, and was an adviser and speech-writer for Joseph McCarthy. Yes, that Joseph McCarthy. So, I guess witch hunts are part of the family business. I don't like people who think its their job to tell me what I can and can't say and do. * When I say Christian Right, I'm talking about a political movement, not a religious one. I am not talking about evangelical Christians, per se. Most of my extended family are evangelicals, I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with a political movement who's aim is to force everyone to live by their patriarchal rules. I really think the religious piece is a big scam. As evidence, I present Pat Robertson who endorsed corrupt serial-adulterer Rudy Giuliani for president. Morally superior, my arse. If Robertson really believed all the religious stuff he spouts, wouldn't he have endorsed Mike Huckabee, who was a true blue evangelical? But Mike was too much of a populist (and a hick) for the GOP bigwigs to accept, so Pat, being a leader of a wing of the GOP, and not really a religious leader, endorsed the more acceptible (to the GOP bigwigs) Giuliani. That's the way I saw it, anyway. I think the mask was off right there. > From: "Rob Argento" > Subject: RE: wardrobe malfunction NJC > > It's an American thing. You simply have to excuse them. It's in my draft box. Sorry to have left you at a South Carolina junction! I'll go dig it out. Some other good news in there, too. Yeah, I was surprised when I scanned the latest digest in morning UConn town that no one mentioned it. It was all death and death and death and death. Talk about comin' down in smoke and ash.... a veritable funeral pyre! ; ) I have the CD of the actual show I attended on 8/15/06. (Merci encore une fois, et infiniment, Angel from Topsfield, Mass!) I can almost hear my own whoops in the background. Best show EVER (excepting all Joni one's, of course.) The end was indescribable: Let's Impeach the President (up on your feet and pump those fists! Woooooooo hoooooo!), FWIW, Chicago, Ohio, ending with a climatic orgasmic Keep on Rocking in the Free World with Neil on his back on the floor breaking all his guitar strings. Loose wires were lashing out at him. Oh my GOD!!! And the encore was some song called Woodstock that Graham yelled out "is for all of you old hippies out there!" and David yelled: "and you young ones, too." Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. It all comes down to Joni. And you just have to laugh cuz it's all so crazy when some people are grumbling on the way out about all the politics. Uh.....HELLO! It's Crosby, Stills, Nash and YOUNG, people! Also on that CD...LOL...this is funny. You know it's live when you hear some guy yell out: "Sit down in front" and some chick yells back: "Shut up, you asshole!" I'm running wayyyy behind the times w/ a malfunctioning ("the dream's malfunction") computer chez moi, plus I'm lost in house and garden, remodeling my bathroom (if only it could be as simple as climbing ivy for the bath -- faucets, light fixtures, toilet, tub, window, sinktop, vanity, flooring, paint, doors, knobs -- some of the crazy you get from too much choice!), and simultaneously getting ready for vacation. I'm in Flip City these days! (Yeah, yeah, I know. So what else is new?) So those demos are not a thing that is unique and new? Oh, well. They will be to some.
