(Warning: deep, not superficial, and pretty heavy company for a Monday morning) Last month I wrote about Prof. Paul Meyer, my study abroad director in France (therefore my "father" for a year) and professor emeritus from my department, who died on June 13th. Unbelievably, his wife, Joan (my "academic mother"), fell down a flight of stairs less than a month later. She succumbed to her injuries on July 10th. We are all stunned, esp. her three children. Gone, both of them. Like the turn of page. At the same time, it is rather perfect. They were inseparable in life (married 62 years) and were true soul-mates. It is not uncommon for such couples to pass away so close together. "Solid love", indeed. I spent all day yesterday (all emotion and abstractions) at the memorial service, burial (Well I looked at the granite markers those tributes to finality to eternity, and then I looked at myself here chicken scratching ...), and reception (people's party). Hence I'm a little raw (esp. after losing my own parents recently within the heart space of 23 months -- and I thought THAT was too close!) but I do want to share something beautiful, since it involves music. Music, sweet music. The niece from Toronto (Salut, Catherine!) brought out her guitar again. (Oh, merde. Where are my tissues? Here we go again. The wax rolls down like tears.) Any time someone brings out a guitar, of course my mind flutters to Joni, and all the wonderful guitarists and musicians here on the JMDL. I don't need to explain to you the power of music! (There's no need to explain.) The family had charged her, encore une fois, with picking out the song. She stood up there, fighting tears, explaining how difficult the past month has been, and how hard it is to chose just one song. She then went on to talk about Edith Piaf, and how she wrote and sang about "big love, huge love." I don't have a lot of time for googling right now, but I think this version will work for everyone here. It's in French, but with English sub-titles so you can get the meaning. Risa sang it very simply, with just her guitar. It was *perfect*. http://video.aol.com/video-detail/edith-piaf-lhymne-a-lamour-english-subtitles/3641965814 A tribute to their "huge love" in eternity. May they rest in peace, together. LOVE, Patti P. (now late for putting on the day. Have a good one, every Jonibody!) P.S. The poem in the program (Joan's favorite) was Le Pont Mirabeau par Guillaume Apollinaire. I don't have time to grab it for you, but it, too, was beautiful. Oh, what the hell. Let me find it. It's too rich and Joni not to share.....it's about a river! (Forgive me if it comes out ooby shooby....sometimes that happens when you cut and paste.) _________________________________________________________________ With Windows Live for mobile, your contacts travel with you. http://www.windowslive.com/mobile/overview.html?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_mobile_072008 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2008 09:49:19 -0400 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: All the way from Galway oops sorry.
