She is also mentioned in the sleeve notes, although the info at discogs.com doesn't specify that particular track. But I guess it's enough "evidence" that it is her. - --jussi ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2008 00:18:56 -0700 From: "Allison Crowe Music" Subject: Re: new music find - Hallelujah! Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is one of the most remarkable songs in the way it lends itself to interpretation. For years, when people were largely limited to hearing what the major record labels market - it was LC's original, or Jeff Buckley's cover that were most oft cited as favorites. John Cale's version, which begat Buckley's and most covers since, tended to be known to afficionados and not a broader public. Shrek broke things open a lot - with the Rufus Wainright and John Cale versions, both, though RW got the soundtrack placement. Really, though, it's the rise of the internet in peoples' lives, and sites such as YouTube, that have catapulted "Hallelujah" into its hugely loved status as a modern folk standard. As noted, these versions, those by kd lang, Brandi Carlile, Kathryn Williams, school choirs, even Bon Jovi, each has ardent fans who take the song to heart through, often, the version heard first and/or that has the most personal association. (No surprise there.) For me, Allison Crowe's 'Tidings' album version is the most moving interpretation. I can say that it's because of what she does with song that I serve as her manager (rather than the reverse). Still, with "Hallelujah" the subjective nature of experience and musical taste is more apparent than with any song I know in the modern popular songbook. What's wonderful to see is how the journey this song has taken, now finds Leonard Cohen on tour, at Glastonbury, and elsewhere, and all the import and attachments come together in his performance. It's a real musical communion. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2008 21:17:46 +1200 From: "hell" Subject: RE: joni "sighting"? From the (extensive) booklet that came with my CSN box set, Joni is indeed listed on vocals on this one, along with David Crosby and Graham Nash, and I've always thought it's pretty obviously Joni. One of my favourite Crosby tracks. The other credits are: Guitars: David Crosby Pedal steel guitar: Jerry Garcia Bass: Phil Lesh Drums: Bill Kreutzmann If you want another superb track, where Joni's vocals shine (no pun intended), check out Graham Nash's "Another Sleep Song". A beautiful track, and (again from the box set booklet) "written in Barbra Steisand's living room, on her piano, while she sat on the sofa eating a T.V. dinner." Back to lurk mode.... I can confirm that it's Joni on the song, Laughing. I have that song. In fact, Joni has done guest vocals on many songs by other artists. Try picking her out on Dan Fogelberg's, Nexus. Why not? As long as she's a fine, fine actress, why not? That would be crucial in anyone playing Joni....or playing anybody famous for that matter. You'd kill your project if you put a half ass actress or actor in a famous role. As for Swingtown, I actually set my DVR to record it this Thursday. It sounds interesting so I'll give it a shot. I also am recording a show called "Intervention" tonight. It deals with people with addictions.....and their families step in for an "intervention" to try and make them get help. I've seen a few episodes before and I always find it very interesting. However, if the addict gets kicked out of rehab or doesn't go, I'm always saddened by that. - -Monika - --- On Sat, 7/12/08, FMYFL@aol.com wrote: > From: FMYFL@aol.com > Subject: an actress that could play a young Joni > To: joni@smoe.org > Date: Saturday, July 12, 2008, 6:08 PM > Historically, when it comes to television, most jmdlers > don't watch tv. Ah, the song "Laughing" is great man. The beginning always reminds me of early Pink Floyd but of course then Crosby comes in and you know what you're listening to. Anyway, sometimes I listen to the song just to hear Joni's vocals at the end even though. She lends some very beautiful vocals to the song. - -Monika ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2008 09:24:36 EDT From: Dflahm@aol.com Subject: Re: Shine sales Wherever you get "sales figures" for ANY recording, do yourself a favor and regard them with extreme skepticism. The DJ seguid it into Joni's "Down To You" (of course) so I was happy to hear that. Two totally different songs, however. Then, tonight at 9 PM, Dan was featured on WFUV's "Live from Studio A" (interview & live in the studio performances). I taped the show but haven't had time to listen to it yet (watching the All Star Home Run Derby) so I don't know if Dan mentions Joni as an influence or not. If anyone would like to hear that show, it will be available in their (streaming) online archives at WFUV.org.
