The reviews I have heard are from two distinct camps, theBeatles camp and the Circe de Soleil camp. The former tendedto love it, and the latter tend to say that it is not a toprate Cirque show. The question of whether it is the bestCirque show seems quite irrelevant to me, as this is thefucking Beatles for Christ sakes, and it is about the music, not necesasarily the choreography and book, etc. Pay noattention to the Cirque folks, as the values are moreconcerned with less important aspect of the production thanthose from our perspective. I don't believe the Cirque folksdislike it either, it is just not one of their favorites. I have heard that it is quite psychedelic, and that is aboutas far as I need to go in a review to be conviced that it isworth the effort to see it. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now -- with somebody -- and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives ... It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerrilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy. We are going to punish somebody for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say. Maybe Afghanistan, maybe Pakistan or Iraq, or possibly all three at once. Who knows? Not even the Generals in what remains of the Pentagon or the New York papers calling for WAR seem to know who did it or where to look for them. This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed -- for anyone, and certainly not for anyone as baffled as George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child-President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it Now. He will declare a National Security Emergency and clamp down Hard on Everybody, no matter where they live or why. If the guilty won't hold up their hands and confess, he and the Generals will ferret them out by force." Yep. He had the fight, he had the insight. Too bad he also had too many pills and powders -- and Wild Turkey (or JD or JB or whatever he drank) and guns! A mind, especially one as brilliant as his, is a terrible thing to waste. (Pardon me if this is old news.) Recently, while I was at my local library returning a book, I spotted a copy of Pattie Boyds book Wonderful Tonight, about her years with Eric Clapton and George Harrison. I checked the index and found Jonis name, page 103. Heres the total of the paragraph: In the summer of 1967 George was working in Los Angeles for a couple of months. We rented a house on Blue Jay Way and met so many fantastic people. Joni Mitchell came over and invited me to hang out with her while George was busy. She was great fun and took me to a studio belonging to a friend of hers where she and some other musicians sat down and played together. One day David Crosby, of the Byrds, invited us to his place in the hills. We arrived to find a swimming pool full of naked people. Not knowing anyone or, indeed, what to do we went into the house until David arrived, naked, with a joint in his hand. He soon realized we were not going to join in so he put on his shorts. Next thing, the pool attendant arrived and didnt bat an eyelid, got on with his job. L.A. is wild, I thought. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Jul 2008 17:58:36 -0700 From: "Mark Scott" Subject: Re: njc, Beatles LOVE - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patti Parlette" To: Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2008 1:14 PM Subject: njc, Beatles LOVE > Thanks for all the advice, everyJonibody! > > So.............. > > I bought me a ticket! > > And I'm catching a plane to Las Vegas. Speaking of art based on Beatles music, I finally got 'Across the Universe' from Netflix and watched it last Friday night. There are some sidetracks that were a bit on the silly side (the whole Dr. Robert/Magical Mystery Tour thing - Eddy Izzard's Mr. Kite was a bit better) but on the whole I enjoyed the movie. Am I correct in my credit reading that the main actors did their own singing? I really liked what they did with the songs for the most part. And no director that I know of has quite the visual flair that Julie Taymor has. They did a nice job of wrapping a lot of 60s spirit, history and Beatles mythology into the thing. Sadie was truly sexy (even though that song didn't make an appearance that I remember) and did a pretty decent Janis Joplin impression with her singing. I thought about Evan Rachel Wood being cast as the young Joni in a 'Girls Like Us' movie. But she really looks more like Kilauren than Joni. A lot of pretty people in this sometimes pretty, sometimes garish, sometimes jolting film. And it does have a story woven into it although it occasionally veers off into maybe unnecessary distractions here and there. But where was Max(well)'s silver hammer? Prudence was Dear, Max called out Hey Jude across the pond and Lucy finally wound up in the sky with diamonds. But no silver hammer and no Sexy Sadie. Mark in Seattle ps: I liked Prudence's spin on 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand'. Brought a whole new dimension to the song, I thought! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2008 02:21:02 -0400 From: Vince Subject: njc happy birthday Leslie Moxon!
