I saw Brian with Joni at the Gorge at George, Washington with Van the Man and Mr. Dylan. (For the record, Van took the prize that night. He was out-of-body for most of the show. When Van is on, there is none better.) Joni was very personable and somewhat chatty, but it was difficult to overcome the storm that hit during her set. It was darn cold and wet, so they set up large heaters on stage that distracted from the sound a bit. Joni played a beautiful Parker Fly electric that was going through a synthesizer that digitally changed her tunings. Cool. Bob soundly rocked and played his Strat like Chuck Goddamn Berry. A magic evening was had by all. I saw Brady five times with SPYBOY and Emmylou and he was inspiring. I got his autograph in Lehi, Utah, and he said, "What you want my autograph for?" I said, "Good Gawd, Brady, you the hottest drummer out on the circuit right now." He wouldn't hear of it, he was very surprised that I'd even said such a thing. For those of you who might not have had the pleasure, check out "SPYBOY-LIVE From the Legendary Exit/In" dvd. It is the essence of the Emmylou experience. It was one seriously rockin' band with THE GREAT Buddy Miller on all things six- string and eight-string and Daryl Johnson on bass and percussion. Emmylou has also written some great songs, as well. Her albums "The Ballad of Sally Rose," "Red Dirt Girl," and "Stumble Into Grace" are 95% Emmylou's own material. Most of the other albums might feature at least one of her songs. She has put together some wonderful music that will stand the test of time. My favorite is the concept album, "The Ballad of Sally Rose," based loosely on her relationship with Graham Parsons. It is a masterpiece in every regard and I hold it dearly in my top ten albums pantheon. It sits nicely with "Blue," "Astral Weeks," "Revolver," "Let It Bleed," "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," "Talking Book," "Rust Never Sleeps," "Robert Johnson-King of the Delta Blues Singers," and "John Lee Hooker Plays & Sings the Blues" in that pantheon. I have often wondered how Joni and Emmylou would sound together. They are both Divas of Sorrow, so they would have lots of common territory to explore. I went both nights because I had waited more than 20 years to see Joni in concert and who knew if the chance would ever come so close to me again? I remember clouds threatening almost the whole time during both concerts and the heaters on the stage. But in my memory it did not rain either night. I can't say that I'm a fan of Van Morrison's so I'm not really a fair judge of his performance. In fact I think we skipped Van on Sunday to avoid the traffic. Getting in and out of the Gorge Amphitheater is a bit of a clusterf**k. I don't think I've been back there since. Joni had Larry Klein, Greg Leisz and Brian Blade with her and they made some beautiful music. My main complaint was the rudeness of the crowd many of whom insisted on talking or getting up and down during Joni's set. Really had to concentrate on Joni to keep from being majorly pissed off. But it's an experience I'll never forget. It also helped to open me up to Bob Dylan's records. I liked his music performed by other people before that concert but always had a hard time with Bobby's singing. Now I have several of his classics on cd and have developed a healthy respect for him as a performer. > > I saw Brady five times with SPYBOY and Emmylou and he was inspiring. > I got his autograph in Lehi, Utah, and he said, "What you want my > autograph for?" Rickie Lee is an artist that from the very beginning Ive been fascinated by her. I will listen to anything she does. Shes so fearless and completely un-self-conscious. I love when she does beautiful harmonies with herself that sound like horn sections. This album doesnt have the dreamy stuff she normally does; most of it focuses on guitar.
