Please send a prayer or a kind thought out for Hugo Potenza, a gifted and wonderful pianist friend of mine. He had been ill for quite sometime with a debilitating brain tumor and we were expecting his inevitable departure from this life even though he tried to hang on as long as he could. He had a very difficult time speaking this past year as the tumor took its devastating toll on his life. But the most heart-wrenching part was experiencing an excruciating pain within myself when he told me he could no longer play his piano and it tortured me so that I was the one who could no longer speak to him without becoming unravelled, so I became the silent one instead and communicated through mutual friends here in San Antonio and his brother and uncle, all musicians who live and work in Mexico City. It's going to be difficult for them to be the life of the parties for awhile, I'm sure. Hugo's forms of expression all became mute. I just can't imagine. It hits too close to home for me to think. I couldn't take it anymore. He lived solely for music and when that was taken away from him, all I could do was retreat into a little box of paints so as not to think of his pain and instead colored music into his life with my mind and which I know he got. He lived in Boston for awhile, taking some courses at the Berklee College of Music, playing with the Boston Symphony to pay the bills. He knew how much I loved Joni. I remember when he was living with a friend of mine here, using this town as home base for a couple of years, back in early 90's, he mentioned to me once that at the time he was taking courses at Berklee, and if I recall correctly, that Joni may have been taking a course the same semester. I never probed into it or asked any further because I don't focus on other passionate musicians with passionate musicians when they are so focused on their own work---I don't even know if Joni took some courses there or if it was a Joni course he was mentioning. All I know is that there was a Joni connection or some sort of Joni Content in his life. Astor Piazzola had been his mentor and his passion and he dreamed of having been able to have known Carlos Gardel, just so that he could have played with both Piazzola and Gardel at the same time. How Gardel could work his baritone voice from the classical tango and into the jazz tango intrigued me but couldn't picture it nor hear it with my imagination until I heard Herbie Hancock's, 'the joni letters' and then I got a taste of it. Herbie's beyond description for me. Hugo conjured up his dreams into a short, surreal film which won some sort of award on PBS or some organization. All I remember was his joy at the time he was working on that film with his fellow musicians and acquaintances. Somehow he made his dreams come true and that's why he pulled through like a champ with flying colors until his very last breath. Well, thanks to all here at the JMDL who lend me a listening ear and who give me a spiritual shoulder to cry on. I had not heard Herbie's collection of Joni songs but was eager to. I got home from a very stressful day of being a beuracrat and found my half.com purchase in my mailbox. I immediately downloaded it on my iPod put on my running shoes and had my maiden listen while cruising the Helderbergs in Southern Albany County on a sunny beautiful evening. My pace was appropriately slow but that's OK I had lots of hills to cover. I enjoyed every step of it. This is a good recording. At first I thought ... another River ... there's so many worthy songs. But I have to admit - I'm glad to have it and all the others too. Joni's in fine voice. Norah and Tina do a topnotch job and Herbie's work is superb. Terrific arrangements. Speaking of arrangements - I'm glad to see some discussion about Ladies of the Canyon. I've always had a weak spot for this recording. I really enjoy it and though I don't play it often I appreciate every listen. **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars.
