But who could play King, Mitchell, and Simon as teens?" I don't know if she could pull off Joni in her teens, however, Gwyneth Paltrow has always fascinated my as an actress in her sensibilities in roles such as the movies "Sylvia", "Proof", and "Running With Scissors" and in my rather superficial and brief exposure to her work, she strikes me as having characteristics including obvious physical similarities to Joni and as well in her persona as a type of vulnerable and hopeful "flower child" whose struggle for meaning and artistic purity and integrity have led to not-so-glamorous roles which lacked corresponding instant cinematic popular gratification, paralleling in a way Joni's struggle to be true to her music and herself. The similarities to me (without knowing all that much about Gwyneth's life) are striking. Even their daughters, "Little Green" (Kelly Green) and "Apple" bear names that are remarkably similar when you think about their symbolism. Daryl Hannah comes to mind in a similar way... Or who knows maybe some ingenue out there just waiting to be discovered that is willing to try and "tame the tiger". It would be interesting to have some JMDL'ers discuss their potential candidates for a potential Joni casting nonetheless. The very first second I read the possibility of making this into the movie I didn't like the idea. After thinking about it, it could be done, as long as it is done well. We've had a few movies concerning musicians that were quite good. I just wouldn't want it to be all "Hollywooded up." As for Paltrow, though I think she's a good actress I wouldn't want her as Joni and here's why. There are quite a few people I know who think there is something very distant and cold about her...as if she seems to put something out there like that. That being said, I would want somebody who could bring a likeability factor, and not only to Joni but to all three women. I wouldn't want people to be put off right away because of the actress. Now I don't necessarily feel that way about Paltrow but more than one person has told me such a thing. Plus, as mentioned, she is too old to play a young Joni as is featured in the article. -Monika Mark Angelo wrote: I don't know if she could pull off Joni in her teens, however, Gwyneth Paltrow has always fascinated my as an actress in her sensibilities in roles such as the movies "Sylvia", "Proof", and "Running With Scissors" and in my rather superficial and brief exposure to her work, she strikes me as having characteristics including obvious physical similarities to Joni and as well in her persona as a type of vulnerable and hopeful "flower child" whose struggle for meaning and artistic purity and integrity have led to not-so-glamorous roles which lacked corresponding instant cinematic popular gratification, paralleling in a way Joni's struggle to be true to her music and herself. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2008 08:35:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: joni in toronto I've seen the art show already and am going to the ballet on Friday (cheap seats though - I'm not a member of the jet set.) And, regardless of how often I listen to any one of her Cd's, I'm breathless with awe. (I imagine that the "dewpoint" > is similar to your "humidex", Catherine.) Not quite. Humidex is the combination of heat and humidity that makes it feel hotter than it really is. The more humid it is, the hotter you feel - so you can have temps of 30 but humidex of 40. I'm talking celsius here - the REAL way of measuring temps ;-) Dewpoint is the point at which water vapour in the air will condense and turn into dew. (or sweat on people, but "dew" sounds so much prettier.) We had a mother of a T-storm last night just after midnight. Sheets of lightning and really loud thunder that echoed off the buildings. Scary! There was a story on the news last night about some guy who was playing golf and some lighting struck CLOSE to him, and travelled through the ground and knocked him over. He survived. I always knew there must be another reason why golf is a stupid game. There were also videos of the terrible flooding in the midwest, with houses on riverbanks breaking in half or sliding down into the water. Not little huts either, but BIG houses. __________________________________________________________________ Looking for the perfect gift? (Give me some time, I feel like I'm losing mine...) But I'm getting little sparky seeds of a story in my heart and mind, from the sweet inspiration of In France They Kiss on Main Street: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFM-ZX5Trro One of Joni's happiest songs, imo. Makes you want to wreck your stockings in some jukebox dive, don't it? I feel like I *knew* Chicky and Ron and Lead Foot Melvin with his hot wire head (yes, great line, Mark!). (Aside: www.hotwire.com is a good site to go to for good deals on blue hotel rooms and flights tonight, etc.) You all must have your own stories about these guys from when we were wild in the old days. Quelle coincidence that just yesterday I took my brother and nephews to the highways, so these wild days are now fresh in my mind. Yep, we took the road to Baljennie to our old hometown. We even "cruised through the hamburger stand" where we would hang out in high school. (Well, my brother did not hang out with me. He's 10 years younger. By "we" I mean me and my friends.) Actually, we would just meet up there to see who had the car, and then we'd take off out of there w/ whoever did get wheels that night. Our Chicky was named Archie, and we really DID have a Ron (who had his own car, so it was always a possibility to jump in HIS backseat), and there was a Leadfoot Melvin who was more like a greaser (or a "ditty", we called them then), and his friend Lumpy. One night we ended up with Melvin and Lumpy just cruising the highways and byways. We snuck into a pool hall for pitches in some swanky retirement village and promptly got kicked out. This was the 70s version of Happy Days (those kids with their cokes and chocolate bars), I guess, because, well.....oh, never mind! LOL...okay, let's just say we had Acid, booze, and ass Needles, guns, and grass Lots of laughs Lots of laughs In a good way. And NO! No needles and no guns, of course, and only a few did acid. It was more like a big party in a car, so no ass, either. We'd bring us out a bottle and have some laughs. No designated drivers in those days so we are lucky to be alive. Dumb kids!!!! But we sure did have Fun Fun Fun til our daddies took the T-Birds away. Oh! There was one night when Patti had the car (the family station-wagon, a dorky Oldsmobile, but who cared?) and we went to the big summer happening, the Monroe Firemen's Carnival. After we left the moons and Junes and ferris wheel and all that, we thought it would be a good idea to ring the bells at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on the town green. At midnight. In the War of Independence Rock 'n' roll rang sweet as victory. Chicky and Ron and Melvin (Bob and Jim and Jimmy) pulled the ropes, and you should have heard that chapel pealing silver bells! LOL...It came ringing up like Christmas bells and rapping up like pipes and drums. Betsy (Olana, who gave me STAS) and I were in the getaway car, laughing it all away, when the minister came out! UH OH!!!!! We didn't want to stand and fight -- we wanted to take off outta there -- but we couldn't leave those choir boys there alone w/ no escape. The minister and his wife were actually very kind. They invited us in to their parlor and explained how we just might be disturbing the peace (moi? disturb the peace?) and that we should never do this again. They didn't even call our parents or the cops. Phew! So we weren't broken in churches and schools And molded to middle class circumstance And we were rolling rolling rock 'n' rolling Oh, you wanted a JONI* story? I'm sorry. I got carried away with that song (not a mysterious song at all) and all the Joni spirit that's inside of me. It was done by The Fifth Dimension, and gained popularity on the AM radio, before the FM radio stations really came along, during those days when The Ed Sullivan Show was the best Sunday night TV watching ever and it was from the song, 'The Age of Aquarius.' For being just a inquisitive kid, right when the hippies were doing their unconventional thing, which I had no idea about, still too young to enter into this new "Don't trust anybody over thirty" era, this song was different and gave us little kids, through the lyrics, a peep into the blossoming of the flower child scene with those loud and psychedelic colors, on the Top 40 radio stations and the Ed Sullivan Show. At the end of the song it turns into, "Let the sunshine, Let the sunshine in, The sun shine in Let the sunshine Let the sunshine in The sunshine shine in... How many times, I could not tell you, but the song would stick in my head and would play over and over in my head during school, especially if the song came on the radio in the morning right before I'd get to school, because it went on and on and even the sounds of every instrument stuck in my head, especially the horn section and I loved the way it would kick in.
