When Joni first announced her partnership with the Starbucks corporation I remember hearing lots of grumbling about it..They are the enemy of the world apparently(i wonderif the ceo of dunkin donuts started that)..lol. Because of this i have to qualify my actions by saying I was out of work for months nearing a zero balance no voice overs no politics all of my usual money making devices were dried up...A good friend of mine led me to her starbucks and I was working two days later..It's not as bad as I thought...In fact, I find it quite enjoyable...The main reason is I get to hear Joni at work more often than not...The people who control the music lol send a feed to each store and it plays throughout while showing album art etc on an hdtv...Whoever is picking the playlist loves joni..joni, tori amos miles davis some really good stuff...So as I justify my work at starbucks..The only thing I kind of hate is the fact that i work in a very affluent area...It's very hard for me to relate to people who throw money at you to pay for their drink, and have other people raise their kids..Not becuase they have to work to support the kid..But because they have yoga and pilates and the such..There are a few wonderful people but not on the whole...Yesterday as the store was filled with some of the people I just mentioned the man behind the music curtain decided to play Harry's House..The smile on my face was measurable..I wanted everyone in the store to listen to every word and throw down their Soy skinny latte and start burning their bras and workout gear...I still hold onto the fact that one of em actually listened to the song.. But it was a great big cosmic kaboom in my head..I loved it!! I love the power of Joni's songs.. I am also happy to report that I made a joni mix for the 19 year old surfer I work with and he LOVED it..I am still trying to figure out where he surfs in jersey but that's another story..Hope everyone is well xoxo Kev ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2008 12:04:56 -0400 From: Marianne Rizzo Subject: violin and left hand, njc Perhaps someone can offer some advice. I bought my sister's twins (Bella and connie, 7 and a half years old) violins last week.. . They were asking for them, especially connie. . "I want to play the violin, I want to play the violin." I know nothing about the violin, but since Laura (Stanley) is visiting me I knew that she could help me. First, I bought full size which seemed small enough until you played them . . (laura told me to get a smaller size) but I found these so I bought these (full size). so that is perhaps a problem. . but here is my question, Connie is left handed and it is her tendency to play the violin naturally with the bow in her left hand. My sister and Laura have been calling music stores to see about new strings to convert Connie's violin to left handed. . and also the CHIN PIECE must be different. . . for left hand playing. One woman at a music store said to keep the violin the way that it is. .. have her learn right handed. She said that if she were ever in an orchestra that the bow would be in the wrong direction.(if the violn was converted to the left hand) I am inclined to make it left haded for her. I do not see her being part of a major orchestra. I want her to enjoy it. . maybe play in the school band. . take lessons. I don't want it to be hard for her. (the violin is hard to play it seems, I tried it the other day and it was somewhat difficult) (laura played "both sides now on" the violin. . it was so beautiful .. ) Does anyone have any advice for Connie about the left handed violin? It is definitely not the kind of show I'd normally be attracted to - but five years in a women's college... well it's inescapable. Whereas I find Carrie Bradshaw's little-girl attitudes really annoying, as I do whenever grown up women are made to act out 'the little girl inside them', I have to agree with Monika that there is something really touching about the friendships. There is a scene when Carrie is away in Paris and it is very glamorous, but then she sees a group of three women in a cafe, chatting away, and she stares through the window, jelaously, until they stare back, and she phones Miranda and says that everything is all right but she misses the girls... In any other film it would be her having left a boyfriend behind and seeing a couple of lovers and then calling the boyfriend. That is touching.... Plus I have to say that she really knows how to, not just dress, but ... wear those clothes. Everytime I've seen the show I feel I have been reminded about the greatness of great fashion. The thrill of wearing something that is just a little bit above looking good or being trendy. Oh, one thing that bothers me and that I'd like to ask if I could: why does Carrie wear a bra underneath her nightgown? Why would anyone do that? We all know why she wears it when having sex, that's because it was in the contract, but were bras underneath nightgowns also in the contract? .... Or is that what they do in America...????
