Although, Jerry is probably correct about the Banshee Talkbox, when I googled Banshee and Musical Instrument, I rec'd a hit for an Aeolian Harp and/or Wind Harp. Then I went to youtube and found this amazing video. Plus, this was done in Saskatchewan!! (my links may not be working well, so you may have to copy and paste in your browser.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vItgY9osiWI&feature=related Gordon Monahan - Aeolian Winds Over Claybank Saskatchewan Long piano strings are attached at one end to a chimney and the other end to the wooden roof of several storage barns. As wind blows across the strings, vibrations are induced in the strings. The sounds are amplified through the wooden boards of the storage barns. > Date: Tue, 27 May 2008 22:13:25 -0400 > From: deoll@comcast.net > To: hvnphun16@hotmail.com; joni@smoe.org > Subject: Re: The First Album 40 years on, desert island top 5 records > > Right you are. I felt I HAD to reply to THIS thread. Not only was the self-titled Grand Funk album (second album/the red one, from 1970) the last album I listened to all the way through, but I've also listened to it all the way through a half-dozen times since I bought it recently. I was so turned onto it while browsing in a used record store in Florida (it was playing in the store, of course) that I had to buy it. I believe it's one good ol'-fashioned kick-ass rock 'n roll record that I'm sorry I never heard before. Last Joni album I listened to all the way through? First of all, I usually listen to EVERY Joni album all the way through, when I DO put one on, as long as it's one of her early albums. It was probably Court & Spark. A bit late with this minor bit of Joni trivia, but I didn't notice it mentioned before and thought I'd throw it out there for all you "completists." On the May 19th Jeopardy!, the reigning champ got the "daily double" and bet a couple thousand dollars; the "answer" was (something like) "This Jazz musician won a surprise Best Album Grammy for his, 'River: The Joni Letters.'" As usual (!) the guy just looked completely clueless (as in George-Bush-Deer-In-Headlights-Stare) and couldn't come up with Herbie Hancock (or any OTHER name). And yet, they can't get off the island. **** Lots of laughs, Catherine! Please don't vote me off the Grecian isle, but I just had to laugh when you mentioned Gilligan's Island. Sometimes the theme song pops into my head when we talk about what we'd bring to a desert island. The ship took ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle, with Gilligan, the skipper too, The millionaire, and his wife, The movie star, The professor, and MaryAnn, here on Gilligan's Isle. I think of Les Irvin as the wise skipper, the professor (Flynn), and MaryAnn (Marianne/Treegreen1). The rest of the castaways, I really don't know. I really don't know! But, I know *this* much is true. Song to a Seagull is the most life-changing album I've ever known. And so, it began. Happy 40th Anniversary, everyJonibody. I'm not much of a TV watcher, or a contemporary music listener. At least not the kind that is generally featured on American Idol. And I agree with Monika that it is all Mariah Carey derivative. And jeez, Mariah was around forever ago (early 90s?). Who knew that style would have such a long stifling effect on female vocalists? WTF. ...anyway, I did watch the first season avidly (and voted for Kelly every week). Does anyone remember the redhead that hung on like a dead limb till almost the end? And was bloody awful? I could not figure it out. Nor could anyone that I talked to, so I don't know who the hell kept voting for her. It seemed like she almost got embarrassed to be there week after week, like she knew she didn't belong. The 2 MCs (Seacrest and the other one) kept likening her to Janis Joplin. Oh please, STFU! Having a raspy voice does not make you Janis. grrrr... ...anyway (part deux), one week the redhead's completely adorable 5-year-old son gave her a bunch of roses, to a collective "Awww" from the audience. And a collective groan from our living room. Crap, she's good for at least another week now. F***! Anyway, I kept watching that season because I really liked Kelly Clarkson. And she didn't really do the Mariah thing, at least not to my ears. Although, I must say I liked her alot better back then as an AI contestant, before LA had got a hold of her and pasteurized and homogenized her. Not so much now. Now she sounds just like everyone else on the radio. Oh well. Damn it. I was catching up on digests and I was so proud of myself for making it this far without jumping onto the dem primary thread. But, you just hit my nit-picking nerve. Obama is not the first black person to win primaries in those states. It is a pet peeve of mine that America seems to have flushed Jesse Jackson down the memory hole, and the myth has somehow taken root that Obama is the first competitive black candidate. Not so. Jesse won over 1200 delegates and won the following states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina (Gore won NC), Virginia, Delaware, Michigan, Vermont, and Alaska. Granted, he may not have been as articulate as Obama (translation: he sounded a lot blacker when he talked) but he ran a strong campaign and gave Dukakis a run for his money. Dukakis had a big lead throughout the race, but Jackson stayed in it till the convention. I thought he made history, but apparently not. It is true, though, that Clinton is the first competitive female candidate. She made history... er, excuse me... herstory in NH by being the first woman to win a primary for either party. It's unfortunate that two groups that have been marginalized for the whole of American history, African-Americans and women, have chosen the same year to field such strong candidates. But, the fact is there will be one winner, and one loser. One group (hopefully not both) will have to wait a bit longer.
