Their two-page review of Shine was one the meanest I've ever read (of any album) - poisonous and antagonistic at quite a personal level (and a very unbalanced account of the album). I had been considering taking out a subscription, as it's an interesting mag, but that stopped me right in my tracks.... Have a great show & folks in the area don't miss these two extremely talented performing songwriters! Oddmund shared: "I'm listening to some great music: Like Ani Di Franco, Nina Simone and Kate & Anna McGarriggle. Their second album "Dancer with bruised knees" is a real treat (If you can like their folky style)....." Oh my God, Oddmund! Magnet and iron, the Joni souls. Sweetheart, no *wonder* you are having a hard time dealing with sibling rivalry/second son inferiority. You've been listening to "First Son"! No, no, no! Don't listen to it! You're just romanticizing some pain that's in your head. I'm sure that your mother loves you just as much as your brother. I met a woman (LOL...I don't think she had a mouth like yours, or that she knew your devils and your deeds) who had a cartoon on her desk that said: "How do you divide your love between four children?" The answer: "I don't. I multiply it." In any case, I would *never* allow my second son to hear that song. Honestly, if it ever came on, traveling in some vehicle or sitting in some cafe, I would turn it off tout de suite or take off out of there. "Dancer with Bruised Knees" came out just when my first son did, in 1977. Joni got a little side-lined by Kate and Anna, and Veronique Sanson ("Christopher is calling, I hear my little one...") I was stuck at home with no car and no money, but it was like living on Sisotowbell Lane. We had a rocking chair (someone was always there!) and we'd rock all day, and dance to this song, endlessly. I think he got spoiled by the constant movement. I truly loved this album: a few French songs for added enjoyment, but "First Born" was the sweet synchronistic kicker for me and my beautiful baby boy. No youtube (but there are some of Kate and Anna w/ Linda Ronstadt or Emmylou), so here are the lyrics for those of you unfamiliar. (Oddmund, do not read them! I am protecting you! Come, let's take a walk, a bridge, a tree, a river....oooh -- pointing to a blue blue sky -- look at that black crowing flying! Look how he's diving down to pick up every shiny thing!) The silver spoon's in the mouth Baby clothes are baby-blue Nothing's ever handed down Everything's brand new Newspaper notices heralding that great event Daddy's buddies send the flowers Mother's friends have baby showers Welcoming that Heaven sent That first born son is always the one The first to be called and the last to come He's his mother's favorite, his grandmother's too He'll break their hearts and he'll break yours too For he's the first to creep and the first to crawl The first to walk and the first to fall Every bruise is kissed, every cry is heard Every doubt's cast out with a soothing word 'Cause he's that first born son, he's that special one No matter what comes next, no matter what comes along Be it another boy or a sweet baby girl The family's the oyster and he is the pearl Some of them make it, some of them don't Some of them can't, others won't grow up In the bible of old, according to Exodus Every first born son of a Jew got axed But the one who survived with the help of God's hand Led his people to the promised land Yes he's that first born son, he's that son of a gun Just hates to walk, just loves to run He loves to run as fast as he can With life held tight in the palm of his hand I'm sure Muller can relate w/ Nate. (And you know, there may be more....) Yesiree, Bob. Life held tight in the palm of his hand, and in mine. (All my peace signs are held up by my sons' old hockey sticks. I hold tight to the hand-taped stringed grips that they used to grip so tight.) There ain't no recruiters getting near MY precious pearls. Mama lion is ever on-guard. Ha. En garde! Talk about bruised knees... Patti'd get out her cane! Whack, whack! (Sorry. I'm living with war in my heart everyday.) Love, Patti P, wondering how our new Joni mama and baby are doing out in SLC, hoping they are rocking away, in a SLEEPING car! P.S. Songs really *are* like tattoos, aren't they? _________________________________________________________________ Keep your kids safer online with Windows Live Family Safety. http://www.windowslive.com/family_safety/overview.html?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_Refresh_family_safety_052008 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 May 2008 00:56:46 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: more on joni's ballet, then k.d. mentions joni Thanks for this, Mags! http://www.cbc.ca/arts/theatre/story/2008/03/10/alberta-ballet.html ***** The gift goes on....
