My tongue always gets caught in the whisk. I love brownies. Both kinds. Annie probably did put that special ingredient in originally but left it out of this recipe for publication. David Crosby probably supplied that ingredient. I can just see it now...David sitting at her kitchen table unfurling the greenery while Annie heated up the oven. Maybe Joni sitting there too, working on a new song, sunlight streaming through the canyon. Jackson and Stephen tinkering with the van outside. Neil and Graham, jamming on the porch. Things to think about as you eat your brownies. I too would love to see the pictures, seems a long time since I've seen you so please send one with you and the baby as well. I'll echo Patti here and wish you good sleep. Or sleep of any kind! ha db >>> Patti Parlette 5/13/2008 9:47 PM >>> Welcome to the world, Amelia Louise! And welcome to the Joni Parents' Club, Alison E. in SLC! I heard "Isn't She Lovely" on the radio today, and dedicated it to you and Amelia. (Side note: Stevie Wonder is 58 today. And so is my brother Richard. He's in SLC and I just talked to him. The last time I saw Richard was in January at my mother's deathbed at Alta View Hospital in SLC...death and birth and death and birth. Where was Amelia born? ) (Synchronistic logic that goes on in my head.) When my first son was born, my mother-in-law gave me a cross-stitched sampler that read: "Cleaning and scrubbing can wait for tomorrow, For babies grow up, I've learned, to my sorrow. So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust, go to sleep. I'm rocking my baby, and babies don't keep." It is true. The circle game goes so fast. (I'm a little bit corny I'm a wildwood flower waving for you...) I hope you have a comfortable rocking chair! (Jovial neighbors come down when they will With stories to tell Sometimes they do Yes sometimes we do We have a rocking chair Each of us rocks his share) All blessings on you and your family. Oh, yeah. And sleep. I wish you good sleep! Love, Patti P., who would love to get some pix P.S. Tell Amelia that some of us are working to make a better world for her. She will be a new sweet inspiration for me to carry on. P.P.S. Make sure to touch the back of her ears. It was like I had Joni's antennae on. They picked up your signal the minute I walked through those doors. Magnet and iron, the Joni souls, I guess! ; ) (NPIMH: Now the seventh of December was covered with snow And so was the turnpike from Mansfield to Oakdale) Oops. Went off there a bit. Sorry. Sally, thanks for sending that student to me. Tom, was it? I talked to him for a while and so did Norma and he seemed better afterward. I hope we helped him some. Really nice guy. I laughed when he said you told him that I would be wearing the same necklace as you. BUT he said he's never heard of Neil Young. Whattsa matter with kids these days??? ; ) And whatsa matter for YOU not teaching him about Neil? Sheesh. All of my student workers can pass the Joni Mitchell 101 exam after only one semester working here. **** Okay, c'est tout. It's a terrible loss. There's way too much of that nasty stuff going on. It's bad enough when someone dies of so-called natural causes, or in an accident but when they die in this way, it's just senseless and pointless. I have a co-worker whose brother was shot by the cops. He was schizophrenic and had stolen a lemon or something from a fruit market. I guess the guy in the market tried to stop him, but he had a knife and called the cops. The cops chased after him and I guess he didn't want to put the knife down, and they shot him. He had run into a park. It was dark. Did they overreact? Probably, but you never know. A kid who goes to my son's school was also shot by the cops. I think he was involved in drugs or stealing and apparently he or one of the kids he was with had a fake gun that looked real, and it was once again, in a park, in the dark, and if the cops were told he had a gun, I guess they wouldn't take any chances. Other people shot in gang wars and often people who were innocent bystanders in the wrong place at the wrong time, shot down by some 17-year-old gangsta with a stolen gun. When I say "shot", in all cases, they were shot dead. It seems like at least one of those happens every week. And you're right, it seems to be getting closer to home all the time. Take care of yourself. - --- Victor Johnson wrote: > Just found this morning a friend, and classmate, was > shot and killed > in Augusta this weekend. I hope she gets better very soon. That must be tough but it is very nice what you are doing. As for helping out that 24 year old, I think Joni's music will help. I am a firm believer that music can be like therapy. Music soothes. Music helps. Music is like a friend. Music is like that friend that sticks around when all the doors in the world feel as if they have been shut on you. Specifically, I think Joni's music has a very soothing quality to it musically speaking and quite a bit of wisdom and/or insight lyrically speaking. You could even let this person know about Joni's bouts with depression back in the 70's... Anyway, hope everybody's having a good week. Trina Robbins appears in the documentary "Crumb" about the father (arguably) of the underground comic scene: Robert Crumb. Of course, I had no idea when seeing the movie that she was a principle character in one of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs. But, seeing her picture and reading about her on her website jogged my memory, so I looked it up and sure enough: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0730483/ Its a fantastic movie, btw, if you're at all interested in Crumb. But, I am nothing if not a sentimental fool, so they were extra special. I was absolutely tickled that I was making the same brownies from the song. :) Annie says that Joni saw her as a hippie Martha Stewart. I just don't see it, and I don't think Joni would either. I just can't see Joni putting Martha in a song and having it be at all complimentary. What song would she fit in? Maybe "The Arrangement"? Or "Harry's House"? I don't know Annie but judging from her words, and Joni's words from the song, Annie strikes me as the antithesis of Martha. Martha is all about appearances, and keeping up with the Joneses, and perfectly folded napkins, and appropriate this, and tasteful that. Ugh! Let me out, I need some air. There was a missing ingredient from the brownie recipe, but it isn't the one everyone is talking about. As every real cook knows, the secret ingredient in any good dish is Love. Of the Three Ladies, I always identified most with Annie. (surprise, surprise) What I got from Joni's lines about Annie is that her kitchen and home were always well stocked with plenty of the secret ingredient. I believe that is what Joni was trying to say about her. Les, if you're still in contact with Mrs. Burden, tell her I love her bunches, and thanks for the brownies.
