(In fact, it arrived at my building at least a week ago and property mgmt puts a note on your mailbox to say you can pick it up at the office because it's too big to fit in the mailbox, but apparently someone has been removing those notes from people's mailboxes for some reason, and it was only because I decided to check with them because amazon.ca said it had shipped on the 17th, that I discovered it was there all along). I opened it up and spotted something weird. I figured that somehow the dust jacket had been put on backwards or upside down. However, it turns out that the first 26 pages, plus the title page and contents pages, were repeated, but upside down, and cut badly, out of alignment, at the very front of the book. Nothing seems to be missing though. How much do you think I can get for it on E-Bay? I just read the piece from the JMDL Library Joni Mitchell's 70s Suicide Attempt which gives many details supplied in the book "Girls Like Us" regarding the event. I know this has been discussed before, but what struck me was that the episode, and I have every reason to believe it, involved Jackson Browne of all people. Why does this surprise me? Although the writer does not mention it, after Jackson initially had an altercation with Joni and struck her (hmm....seems this was to happen later with Daryl Hannah), he never attempted to repair the relationship and stuck up a relationship with another woman who would bear Jackson's child Ethan. Joni, it is claimed, cut herself, took pills, smashed herself against a wall, bloodied, and vomited the pills. I find this completely in keeping with the rest of the story which goes untold by the reporter. Jackson Browne's new love interest would herself go on to successfully commit suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills a few months after their marriage in 1975. Jackson Browne would subsequently release The Pretender, my first exposure to his music which consumed me for awhile, and subsequently bought all his 3 previous CDs, which were less heavily produced (less commercial), including my personal favorite "Late For The Sky". I so identified with Jackson Browne at that period of time in boarding school I wanted for the longest time to dye my natural blond hair - flings hair back - just kidding - (I felt cursed to have blond hair at that juncture in time) to Jackson's brown color (no pun intended). I still think those works were outstanding. I wasn't impressed with the follow-up Running On Empty, and soon stopped buying his product and have not been impressed with anything I've happened across since. I was still following Joni's every release, marveling in THOSL and Hejira. I have heard a number of JMDL'ers comment that FTR was their favorite piece. It's a splendid work inarguably, and I miss the kind of things that albums provided, such as the watercolor insert of her enjoying the scent of a rose IIR. I wondered if the heavy use of the piano, which would diminish substantially with ever-increasing use of the synthesizer and particularly the Roland VG-8 in subsequent albums, giving many of them an almost mixed electric/acoustic guitar effect, was partly why. Now after reading this piece, I think perhaps the creativity that was funneled into the album from what was an obviously HEAVILY emotionally charged period (the writer states FTR was created during the breakup and subsequent suicide attempt) may make this a favorite of many JMDL'ers. Interestingly, the author states "Car On A Hill" was written specifically about Jackson and the event. To me the song speaks to a strained relationship in which she is still at the point where she will put up with quite a bit, but reflects a nervous anticipation of the arc of love moving swiftly in the direction of wanting to see the love object in that initial state of infatuation, but contemplating the denial to oneself that signals that perhaps the love object is not the person you had envisioned at first glance. "He said he'd be over three hours ago, I've been sitting here waiting" and "It always seems so righteous at the start, when theres so much laughter , when theres so much spark, when theres so much sweetness in the dark". It doesn't speak to me of a suicide attempt or a relationship that is so broken yet that one would consider this as apparently the GLU author states. So this information is seemingly at odds with the statement in the report that the suicide attempt was during the making of FTR, or maybe not if one dismisses the notion that "Car On A Hill" was not specifically about the attempt. As far as FTR, I know the songs, I'd be interesting in knowing which ones were written specifically about Jackson. "Where are you now, are you in some hotel room, does it have a view?" (See you sometime) - comes to mind for one. And the anger and frustration she must have felt with Jackson that drove her to such drastic measures... you can even feel them in "Judgment of the Moon and Star's (Ludwig's tune)" - as if she'd been down that road herself and knew there are better ways of expressing feelings of desolation, abandonment, anger, and frustration, or even (futility-Song for Sharon) for that matter - than turning them inward on yourself. Anyways, I can see Joni thinking - here I've found a handsome man, perhaps a soul-mate even, after all his lyrics - at least through "The Pretender" indicate an ultra-sensitive individual such as herself, honest, soul-searching, often unapologetically delving into melancholy as she does - someone who "ain't afraid" of the devil, the seemingly perfect combinations, only to find she'd happened upon a misogynist and apparently a narcissist to boot. "Late for the Sky", "Looking into You", "I thought I was a Child" among many, many, others off his first 3 albums are truly memorable. But without knowing much about him, this man seems to have serious anger problems as well as a misogynistic streak, and this from a former fan. I know I remember reading in the list that there is a lot of controversy regarding the episode, but I find it totally plausible in light of these other women in Jackson's life, and eerily similar tales. What a natural high we floated out of the Moore Theatre on after Rickie Lee sent us on our way with 'Flying Cowboys!' 'Flying Cowboys' is my favorite RLJ album. Many here will probably say 'Pirates' is her best but I just love 'Flying Cowboys'. You need to check out 'Satellites', 'Rodeo Girl' and 'Atlas' Marker' as well if you get the chance. Her eponymous debut is one of the best first albums ever recorded by anybody. The writing and performances are all incredibly strong - 'Last Chance Texaco', 'Young Blood', the heartbreaking 'Company' - just about every track is a gem. 'Pirates' was her sophomore effort and has the classics 'We Belong Together', 'Living It Up' and 'Skeltons'. There are some on the list who were around back when I was a detractor of Rickie Lee's. I just didnt' get her. Until I saw her in live performance. Some people have said they have been disappointed by Rickie Lee - that she was drunk during a performance or not up to par. She has never let me down. Her singing is genuine, passionate and accomplished. To experience her live is to feel her in your bones. For a long time after I did my 180 in my opinion about her, I signed my emails to the JMDL 'Mark E. in Seattle'. Edward is my middle name but I was going for a parody of RLJ's only hit, 'Chuck E's in Love'. What I meant was Mark E's in love...with Rickie Lee Jones. I offered to eat a dish or two of crow after seeing her. Mark, I am mesmerized right now with the song and the video, I have played it umpteen times.Apparently produced in 1989, I am still floored by how Joni-esque she appears at least in this video, very striking especially the part where she sings with her Indian friend. The visuals in the video of Native American peoples, coyotes, and eagles are quite familiar to us Joniphiles as well. I too love the ending lines and the emotion that pours forth in them. Not that I was as wild as she was by any stretch of the imagination, but my world has certainly become much smaller in many ways as I have aged. But the world is turning is faster Than it did when I was young Oh when I was young I was a wild, wild one... I found it quite remarkable as well that she was raised in Phoenix, Arizona, where apparently she was quite a "wild, wild one" and ran away from home and hitch-hiked a number of times. The video's imagery makes me nostalgic about my youth, and more recently for my years spent in Arizona when I moved out there some twelve years ago. Although I loved Phoenix, the air is so heavy with man-made particulate pollution, many times obscuring the mountain vistas, but causing me such respiratory problems that I ended up in Tucson where I may return as I have missed The Old Pueblo terribly these past two years. I always simply associated her with the song "Chuck E's in Love" and never thought much more about it. This video, however, has me intrigued about the rest of her songs for now. I'm so glad you used the term "eponymous debut", I was using the word eponymous so much I had to stop myself as I was wondering if I needed to censor myself as up 'til now I haven't noticed anyone else use it. "Self-titled" has a certain ambiguity in my view. They titled it themselves? What title did they choose? etc ;-) BTW I too am a Mark E., however the E stands for "Eric" - I think the spelling Erik goes better with Mark, but I was not given a choice in the matter.
