One and half year ago, when I was still new to Joni, when my Joni catalogue was only Blue and some random songs from her early albums, I went to a friends house. I "messed" with his computer, and found a song on his music library. It was Joni Mitchell - Who Knows Where The Time Goes. I loved the song. I copied it. Then, after 2 or 3 playings at home, i realized it was not Joni. The singer and Joni definitely share the same quality. Now i think, the song Who Knows Where The Time Goes could perfectly fit Joni's Clouds album. I compare the song to I Think I Understand from Clouds, or even BSN. Anyway, back to the mp3, then I change the music info to: Artist : Unknown Artist, and copied the song with another songs to a CD. (Later, my notebook was stolen, but the song was saved) (anyway, the culprits now are in prison) I never played the song again since the day I copied it to CD. I played it again just a few days ago when this Sandy Deny discussion began. The fact that she died young added something to the song... Oh, this song is so deep. Rian PS. I understand why people compare her with Joni. PS. Just watched Jeux DEnfants / Love Me If You Dare with Marion Cotillard. Anyway, I like the movie. In my opinion, the ending is crazier than Romeo and Juliet. I had my car towed to the local Pep Boys parking lot overnight only to find the rear window smashed and the belongings - mainly about 100 CD's in one of those carrying cases - stolen. How they intended to pawn the CD's without their jewel boxes I don't know but crackheads will try anything. Some were Joni CD's too.....waaaaaaaaaaaaa. But I suppose that pails in comparison to my eMac and Harmon Kardon Soundsticks being stolen from my apartment by my neighbors (crack once again). Anyways, that is small change in Tucson and never solved by the police (even though other neighbors clearly saw and pointed out the culprits - - because property theft is relatively commonplace - unless you live in the uppity environs of the Catalina Foothills, where the police know if they solve the crime will be splashed all over the front page of the paper "Million Dollar Theft Solved!" "Money money money it kicks the whole wide world around" As I wrote to you earlier, it was Judy Collins who sang and popularized the song "Who Knows Where The Time Goes". And yeah the comparison to BSN from Clouds is apt, as she also made that song a big hit worldwide. I remember getting onto a KLM 747 in Amsterdam returning to the US for vacation from the Middle East in my youth, and listening to it while it was one of "the big hits" at the time. It really is lovely. It is extremely similar, though not identical to, the version that Simon made available on side 1 of Tape Tree #1, recorded by the late Ed Sciaky from the front row of the Second Fret in Philadelphia on March 17, 1967. Gosh, Brian, thank goodness Ed and whoever did this had their tape recorders with them. I don't remember tape recorders being anything other than cumbersome beasts in those days and the tape quality sounds pretty good to my ears, although I did wonder if I caught the overall level drop a bit in part of it. Nonetheless - over 40 years, as you say and Joni sounds much more 'folkie' than later (by later I mean as early as 'Clouds'). There's that sort of high note projection that reminds me of Joan Baez which, for me, 'later' Joni doesn't do. And as for Sandy being gone 30 years, well, when I find myself asking 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes' I find myself replaying 'I don't know, but I think part of it seems to be right around my middle.' It may be blasphemy, but yes, there is something very early Joniesque about her. But more than that, she is a throwback of sorts (only in a great way) of the sound of music that I remember so many years ago. She reminds me of someone I listened to back then but can't quite recall. She also sounds very much like my best childhood friend who has been writing songs since she was 10. I will have to share the link with her. I really liked listening to Aleda - very pure and good sounds. Maybe our Steve Dulson knows of her? When you wrote that she was a "California" songwriter, I first thought she was one of the many from the L.A. area, but she is from a much less known area - the "Gold Rush" country - which is very historic and more Alpine meadows and forests than what people usually imagine "California" to be. I caught the big girls stage today on what is considered the main stage (STAGE 3 AS WE KNOW IT or Acura as the sponsors know it) starting with Susan Cowsill, followed by Kim Carson (both on Pazfest CD), then Theresa Andersson, Allison Krauss and Robert Plant and Sheryl Crow closing out the day. Allison and Robert were amazing. What a great show! There voices are so amazing together. They did quite a few Zep tunes and she sang along with him filling in on the old high parts he can no longer nail and they blend seamlessly. Really cool set. I had to leave during the 3rd song of Sheryl Crows set and head down to the Hall as the band was playing here tonight. I am in my office having a martini and listening to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band who are killing right now. Life is good at the moment and having a good time.
