In fact the whole song is a litany of powerful lyrics, sobering in their truth. That particular line makes me think of the West Valley of Phoenix, formerly almost exclusively agricultural, mainly cotton crops, replaced by endless of suburbs of McMansions for the working classes who aspired to have a taste of what the Joneses had in the East Valley, in more exclusive areas such as Scottsdale. Now, not unsurprisingly, the area recording the greatest number of foreclosures are those same subdivisions build over farmlands which were considered the least desirable and the last to be developed and sold to the unwitting "cell phone zombies". That is what I envision when I hear the lyrics on a local level, but it is a sad national phenomena. I wonder how much of the original forested area in the Eastern United states is still left. It can't be much. Europe has practically none left, and my memories of flying over Holland and England are "geometric farms" with a few trees sometimes demarcating the boundaries. I wonder if those are remnants of aboriginal forests or lucky "weeds" that escaped the blade. Another line among the many that stand out for me is "Shine on what we throw away, and what we keep". In this "land of mass frustration" we are indoctrinated by ad empires to be good little consumers and the fact is that we throw away 99 percent of what we buy within 6 months. Every bit of plastic every produced (except the 3 percent incinerated) is still among us, or within us as broken down polymers. There are gyres of plastic in all of the oceans, in the Pacific it is estimated at twice the size of the continental United States. Anyways, what all the potent lyrics (and every one of them is) in the song "Shine" seem to me to have in common is the sense of consequence. And that is how I make sense of the ending lyrics: "Shine on the pioneers Those seekers of mental health Craving simplicity They traveled inward Past themselves..." where IMHO she speaks of today's true pioneers as seeking refuge by doing things to simplify their lives, such as turning off the mesmerizing drone of the TeeVee and it's distractions from the reality and worry of consequence of a continual bombardment of fateful symptoms of a world we have poisoned, which shows no sign of abating, and which each of us on an individual level has in reality little to no control over. It's like the book and the term coined from it, Future Shock, popularized in the 1970's in which the futurist Alvin Toffler warned of the inability of the individual's to take in and absorb the accelerating rate of change in society due to (formerly) cheap oil and the exponential technological and industrial "breakthroughs" that would accompany it. Many of the ills that plague us and stress us and send us scrambling for pills or therapy are simply products of a world that has evolved (in many ways for the worse) faster than the human brain can manage. Do we really need to be strolling down "miles of aisles" of supermarkets with 500 different types of cereal, or ketchup, or (fill in the blank). Less is more. Consumption, although awarded by this society, does not bring happiness. Nurturing yourself, a plant, your cat, or something of your choosing can. You made me forget my espresso on the oven it started boiling, because I was so intrigued by your report. But it tastes okay, and it's okay anyways ( - : I love to be blown away by great music reviews like this. I discovered Bjork when she relaesed "Debut" in 1993/1994. I was just fifteen years old and in the start it was a kind of love/hate relationship. I remember I bought the CD in secret and didn't tell my best friend, because we had that this silent agreement that she was weird and kind off far out. Of course she wasn't. Bjork was and is great ! I got really inspired by your report to go back and trace some of the old tracks for myself. Due to the tracking list you provided it seem like she played quite a few tunes from "Homogenic" from 1997. She has released quite a lot in not that many years, so I know that even some die-hard fans, have found her realeases a bit hard to follow. But I think as they say about Joni, when the dusk settles on musical history she will stand out. In the same way I think that when we look back to music from 19904s and 2000`s (and you know there may be more), I believe that some of Bjorks music will stand out as highly original and timeless in it's trendy way. It's not like easy singer song-writer timeless music - it has certainly traces of the time it has been created in. But it's more to it. Difficult to explain, you just have to listen. She really has captured something - and some of that something seeems to me she being true to her heart - and following the path she has to as an artist. Just like Joni ! And her texts and way of singing it is really haunting. Like this State of emergency, How beautiful to be, State of emergency, Is where I want to be. Anthony and Bjork, oh it sounds just amazing. What a thrill and treat you got the other night, Les ! And thanks so much for sharing ! Best ! Oddmund, Norway More than once last night i thought about Miyazaki's Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, when Bjork played the Hammersmith Apollo, London. Trailing a troupe of horn players (..also from Iceland, all women and perfectly called 'Wonderbrass'), Bjork took the stage, itself bedecked with flags and banners, like an Anime Princess. I don't know Bjork's work beyond a couple of tunes popular from her debut Debut recording. None of those featured last night but those songs she did play were a revelation. I think it's fair to describe Bjork's musical vision as challenging. I don't think it's an easy 'in' and in the past i've held the opinion that she is great because those whose opinions i value tell me she is. I'd skimmed some of her later work and as i say i don't find her easy to get into. After last night, i'm going to have to revisit that. She is an original. Her gift for melody is, to me, amazing. Against some cacophanous musical settings, her sung melodic lines are sensational in their subtlety and dense beauty. And of her voice, she has unflinching command. The Miyazaki thing happened again during a beautiful duet she sang with Antony (of the Johnsons). Like one of those cartoon bear-like characters beloved of Anime features, he loomed over Bjork's waif like a protective avatar. This was the high point of the evening for me. Those are two voices made for each other. And you don't know from hair-raising til you been in a Bjork crowd, bouncing to the fast and complex dance beats in a force 10 storm of lights, lasers and confetti while they sing along at the tops of their voices, note and phrase perfect to tunes the unfamiliar would be hard pushed to find 'hooks' in nevermind recollect. Sing-along-a-soccer-crowd, this is not. Brillliant and exceptional, it most certainly is. I've had a quick look online and for those who'd like to know, here's the set list. I can't vouch for its accuracy. 01. Intro - Brennip ^ip Vitar 02. Earth Intruders 03. Hunter 04. Unravel 05. Hope 06. The Pleasure Is All Mine 07. Dull Flame Of Desire 08. Jsga 09. Todd Rundgren has been on the scene for practically the identical time frame that Joni has. He'll turn 60 this year, so watching him and his band smoke the Handlebar last night was very inspiring to me - I'm still kicking ass at 50 and he made it very clear that continuing to kick ass at 60 is no prob. I have been a fan of Rundgren's rock and soul sound ever since my sister bought the Nazz's "Open My Eyes/Hello It's Me" 45 in the latter part of the 60's. I have to admit that I didn't pick up a lot of his stuff over the years because of his inconsistency, but when I got my first CD player in the 80's, his 2-CD compilation was one of my first purchases, and I have spoken very highly in this forum of his 21st century masterpiece, "Liars". All that being said, I had no idea what to expect from this show other than that JJ, the owner & proprietor of the Handlebar (an amazing venue only a couple of miles from home) told me that he was touring with a band. My wife and I got there a bit late...the show hadn't started but the place was packed so we settled in along the sidelines which was no problem as there's not any bad spots in the house. I was surprised to see that there were no keyboards on stage. Todd and his band (Kasim Sulton on bass, Prairie Prince on drums, and another guitarist stormed that stage and immediately started tearing up the joint. I was taken aback with the raw energy of Todd and his band, playing and sounding like a teenaged rowdy band, not like a guy preparing to kick off his 7th decade. I have to admit that because I don't have all of his stuff there were lots of songs that I didn't know but liked nonetheless. And of course, what I WAS familiar with was even more enjoyable. He played two songs off Liars, "Soul Brother" & "Mammon" in which he injected a clap-along, sing-along rendition of "Gimme that Ole Time Religion" which I thought was used to hilarious effect. As far as his older, more familiar stuff, "Black & White" and "I Saw The Light" were big crowd-pleasers, and he did a couple of covers, Red Ryder's "Lunatic Fringe" and "The Walls Came Down", both of which fit his sound quite well. The show, with a 3-song encore, lasted between 1.5 and 2 hours and never slowed down. Like I said, I didn't know quite what to expect, but this was no revisionist, play-the-hits kind of show, and Todd is in excellent shape, physically and vocally. He kept a solid rapport with the crowd and cracked a couple of barbeque jokes, introducing one song as being about "singing the praises of pulled pork". His band was also very solid - Sulton has of course played with him (as a member of his band Utopia) since the 70's, and Prince was/is a member of the New Cars and also is one of the more in-demand session drummers. It's always nice when an event is what you were hoping for and more. This show fit that description for me, and I hope to see him again but at the same time I'm ready for him to get back in his studio and give me something as good as Liars. It was so great to see him. He was handling the pressure wonderfully as usual! He does his job so very well and I'm always so proud of him! The venue was sold out so Paz arranged for us to sit slightly off stage and that was very cool! I had to collect myself a moment as the first song played because it was one that John Brunious always sang. The vocals were noticeably absent and I felt the loss. It was a moving silent tribute to John. I had a chance to meet the new trumpeteer before the show and as I shook his hand, something felt oddly familiar about him. When Ben Jaffe, bandmember and creative director took the stage to introduce everyone, it all come together for me. This person, Mark Braud is John's nephew. As he sang (more in the second half), I could hear some similarities in the voices. It was very comforting for me. We celebrated John and another person very dear to the band who'd just passed away with a second line and I truly understood why the second line is so important. It's an emotional release and a very necessary one. Afterwards we all went back to the hotel and hung out in the tour bus listening to some new music from the guest vocalist/saxaphonist Clint Maedgen who as Paz put it (and I agree) has some crazy, mad skills! We jammed a bit with everyone present into the am and then said our goodbyes. As Paz put it (again) it was a great hang! I got a chance to see my dear friend and help make his life on the road a little nicer. The went on to Delaware to play with the Deleware Symphony Orchestra. I have such a deep respect and admiration for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, for Paz' role in it and for what they are trying to do which is preserve a very important musical legacy. I applaud them for their courage to keep on keeping on in the face of loss and tragedy. I support them any way I can. Most of all, I am so proud of my dear friend and want to let him know this, "Paz, you are making a difference and I am so, so very proud of you!". Anyway, I'm curious about what Joni feels now about that incident, i highlight the word "now". I mean, of course we all have things like "Oh Dear, that thing, what was I thinking at that time?", and then we laugh at incidents that we took so seriously then but feel so funny now. I just had that moment. 2 months ago, I (a 165 cm tall guy - short for your standard, but normal for Asian) punched a friend (a 180 cm tall beefy guy) straight in his face because he told me things that was so stupid/funny if i think about it again right now. Of course now we're doing fine. I'm just curious if Joni was still mad or not about that incident... Rian NP. Madonna feat Justin - 4 Minutes (urgh... urban sound is not my cup of coffee) PS. Sorry for the grammar mistakes... What a show, Bob. I'm envious. It's been years and years since I saw Todd play live at the Toledo Ice Arena in the 70s, wow a trip down memory lane if ever there was one. Thanks for sharing, glad you had a good time. I'm putting a yousendit file up for you. It's Todd with Stevie Nicks Singing "Hello It's Me" at the Roxy 5-23-78. They say this was the first nationwide broadcast of a concert via microwave but I don't know that for a fact, only what I've read about it. http://download.yousendit.com/DFCB40937A885345 Hope you enjoy it. Yesterday I got a message from Sen. Barbara Boxer, who is Chair of the Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works (EPW). She is "passionate in her belief that healthy kids require a healthy planet." (TIC! A safe place for kids to play.) Here is part of her message: "On Wednesday, President Bush delivered what was billed as a major speech on global warming. What a disaster! Rather than staking out a set of ambitious goals for America to strive for, the President argued that the United States should do nothing about global warming until 2025. I can't believe he said it with a straight face. That's completely irresponsible -- and President Bush needs to hear it. Sign my petition to President Bush now -- tell him to stand up and join the fight to stop global warming!" http://ga6.org/campaign/bush_gw/iws77i74o7new7kn??source=bushgw I'll bet Joni would sign it if she used a computer! ; ) If you do sign it, don't freak out (like I did last night!) when you immediately get a message back from the White House: ***** From: comments@whitehouse.gov To: loveuconn@hotmail.com On behalf of President Bush, thank you for your correspondence. We appreciate hearing your views and welcome your suggestions. Due to the large volume of e-mail received, the White House cannot respond to every message. Thank you again for taking the time to write. ***** Aim the hoses on him and flood him w/ our message! He's so square, babies -- he don't care -- but tell him anyway. And in a cool bit of synchronicity, I was just catching up on my newspaper reading (putting Girls Like Us aside for a moment) and learned that there was a big conference at Yale Friday afternoon. "Yale University's 2008 Conference of Governors on Climate Change", where "governors and officials from several states" signed "a declaration calling on the federal government to get moving on climate change" at WOOLSEY HALL. The first place I saw Joni! (This means something to me in the Jonidiomatic logic that goes on in my head.) For anyone interested, the article is here: http://www.courant.com/news/local/hc-global0419.artapr19,0,1230309.story Good to know that people are getting together ("Come on people, now...") to DO something.
