I haven't gotten the book yet, but the review is very interesting to read. Scroll down to the bottom and there's a link to related articles on Joni. There are some things I hadn't read there as well that are interesting so you might want to check them out. I'd talk more but I'm going to baby sit my beautiful 10 1/2 month old granddaughter Lilly this morning and I have to be there in half and hour. Have a great day. Actually, before some Republican primary a few months ago, Fred Thompson did just that. He refused to answer some idiotic question, and later kinda acerbically lampooned his competitors by asking how they would handle Iran and North Korea if they couldn't handle some stupid TV journalist! Thanks for the challenge. Of course not (he said, eyes rolling in his head). How can anyone believe that hits are made from exposure, and exposure is gained from schmoozing, bribery, hype and payola in the music business? No, that would never happen. I think it's naive to argue against the fact that those that have access to certain resources (parents who were famous musicians or famous in general, physical beauty, enormous wealth, etc) have a much easier path to success. All that being said, Carly is no Paris Hilton, she is a very talented singer-songwriter. My point was and still is that there are many as good or better who will remain unknown because they don't have the access to wealth and beauty that she had. It seems Joan Baez is more deserving to be included with Carole & Joni who were all the musical icons of that time. Although Carole's voice is less than perfect I just LOVED Tapestry & never really noticed her voice since the songs were just so great. Joni came along & topped that with her beautiful songs, extraordinary guitar playing & gorgeous voice & awesome voice & ethereal beauty. I thought Carole was beautiful too in a NY down to earth way. The first thing I remember about Carly was that cover of her album. For some reason her voice always annoyed me (too pitchy) & I never thought much of her songs. Although there was the naked Joni photo inside the album (I'm thinking that it preceded Carly's cover?) it was different in the way Carly presented herself for her cover. She is the first songwriter that I remember used sexuality to promote her album. There was a hooker like quality to that cover. Decades later this hooker theme among young female performers has become commonplace. So maybe because of that she deserves to be considered. Although I don't care for Carly's music (love her harmonizing with James though) I think very highly of her as a person. From what I have read she seems to have a lot of integrity & raised her kids right. It seems her kids adore her too. I think it is the anger in the song which is palpable in her vocals that strikes me about the song, especially in the refrain where overdubbing builds noticeably from "you want" to an even louder "everything". I know for myself there is always some "troublemaker" in our lives. I am still working on what I believe to be Buddhist teaching that you take pity on the troublemaker and realize that he/she is suffering and in pain and um...I forget what next but as I said I am working on it... I really can identify with these lyrics too: Going to the church You chant For my downfall Chanting for my house My friends You want it all When you are at the height of your struggle with that troublemaker, a maid, a friend that has betrayed you, your landlord, and especially any authority figure, you can endow that person with so much power (letting them take up space in your head free of charge) you can sometimes (maybe often even) get to the point where you believe they are spending every free second working on your demise as reflected in the lyrics above. It's a bad place to be in, it drains your own energy, and I have a feeling this song was very cathartic for Joni. Anger is an emotion we all have, with varying degrees of difficulty in expressing it, and IMHO I am glad that we have this work of art she produced out of that anger, however controversial it may be, instead of a 45 minute session with some psychotherapist. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Apr 2008 00:55:55 -0400 From: David Eoll Subject: Re: tonight's Democratic debate njc > From: Deb Messling > Subject: tonight's Democratic debate njc > > and it makes both of them look bad. As intended. They might as well have just had McCain moderating the debate himself. I didn't watch the debate myself. But, I've read about some of the "lowlights". I understand that the chatterers are saying that Clinton won. But, even if she did come away looking better Obama, and she may have, this kind of "debate" doesn't help either Democrat in the long run. As designed. Its still the Democratic primary, supposedly, and the Republicans are already framing the general election on their terms. God, guns, gays. And flag pins, and orange juice, and haircuts, and whether Obama's too black, or not black enough, and whether his preacher who hates America knows that he's secretly a Muslim, and Hillary's pants-suits, and her laugh, and her cleavage, and the Weathermen (yeah, seriously, I'm sure plenty of people my age and younger had to go look that one up just to see what the hell Stephanopoulos was even talking about, I'm sure we'll next find out that one or both of the candidates were on the same train as Mario Savio in 1963, and that they therefore hate America too much to be president) and blah blah blah blahblahblahblah. Pay no attention that your jobs are being shipped to China, and that we're destroying the environment that we depend on for our lives, and fewer people can afford places to live or health care or higher education, and that the President of the United States just admitted on television that the Abu Graib (and other) abuses were not the work of "a few bad apples" like he told us four years ago, that in fact he lied when he said that, and instead the whole torture regime was actually planned out in detail inside the White House by the highest officials in his administration including (probably) himself in violation of numerous federal laws and international treaties (which according to our constitution are just as binding as our own laws), and on and on and on. Deb, the issues you listed are the same ones that about 75% of the people, republican or democrat, think are the important issues of the day. And those are the last things our corporate masters, who own the media, want us focused on as we choose our next president. What we should focus on is that so-and-so Democratic candidate ordered the wrong kind of cheese on his (or her) steak sandwich, and therefore (s)he's an effete snob (or a shrill bitch) who's out of touch with the people, unlike the nice folksy swell guy man-of-the-people Republican candidate over there, who you should be voting for. Oh, and while you're at it, buy more plastic crap. We are so screwed. I would rather be transported back to the 80s and forced to listen to Abracadabra 1,000,000 times in a row than leave the kind of world I fear we're going to leave to our kids. And that's sayin' a lot, 'cause I hates that song. I hates it.
