That's Roberta Joan for ya. It's a very readable, interesting book. I recommend it, even though it is occasionally flawed. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Bob Muller Sent: Tuesday, April 15, 2008 7:52 PM To: bworkman@woh.rr.com; PassScribe@aol.com Cc: joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: Girls Like Us (well, not me, but them) She probably turned the author down, don't you think? < How can they suggest that the things they report are true and accurate. > I would wager to say that they are MORE accurate. If you were to ask me about my childhood, or school years, or career, or whatever, it would most likely be personally biased to show myself in the best light, don't you think? Whereas if you talked to people who grew up with me, went to school with me, dated me, whatever, you'd probably get facts closer to the truth. I don't think Joni is any exception to this rule of human nature. Sorry you hate the book - I find it a pleasant change from the other bios I read that just gloss over things. I think there are a few situations where people can still have a private beach in California but this is in a very few communities that were that way before the law. There is one such community near my parents' house. You can still get to their beach but big "No Trepassing" signs will greet you. It's funny because I was down by there over the weekend and thought "hmmm, bet I could just keep walking on the sand onto "their" beach." ;-) I think ultimately their signs don't mean much. Now does the wealthy lady who moved to SB have the first name of Wendy? Heehee. I have heard a lot about her but this is a new one for me! Yeesch! If I had that kind of money I would just paint to my heart's content, generously support local causes, have lots of big parties at my estate and strive to be happy! I would love to have a link to the SB filmakers DVDs about the Cal/Nev/Hawaii cowboys! Please send if you have it. A friend here has a Portuguese graqndmother who was born on Kauai. My friend has never traveled there but it turned out that I had in my photos shots of the very land where her grandmother grew up. She got teared up when she saw the photos. Hawaii has an endlessly rich and fascinating history. It is still and always my favorite place. If you are talking about the Bible, the first 5 books (composing the Jewish Torah) are much older than 2000 years. You might find it amusing that the Torah begins with the Hebrew word, "bereshit." Also, not all writing styles in the Bible can be classified as mythology. Non-narrative parts of scripture such as proverbs don't fit the definition of "myth." Records of lineage's of the Jews and Arabs in the Bible might be less entertaining but are relevant in regard to the present ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. It certainly is. Exactly what I would expect from her. In fact, I seem to remember an interview where Joni said 'these women are not my peers' with reference to at least Carly Simon (I don't remember if she mentioned Carole King or not). And Muller, I don't understand why you wouldn't read the Carly section. Seems to me with the James Taylor connection there would be some of it that would at least be tangential to the Joni material. She has ruined so many lives with her money & continues to do so. SB's own Leona Helmsley. The beach thing was her first way of introducing herself to the community. She tried to sue to keep the people off her beach. It is so sad- with that kind of money you could help so many people yet she is doing the opposite. The link to the film is here http://www.tapadero.com/html/paniolo/pan1.html The film about Hawaii seemed like it needed some more editing but enjoy it for what it is (Tapadero is much better). I visited one of those ranches filmed in Holo Holo when I was staying in upcountry Maui last Thanksgiving.
