All I can say is God help us all. I am truly trying to avoid politics here, but I think we are all on our own at this point. (And if there are any smart financial advisors here who have words of advice on how to preserve/save my retirement account for the coming debacle, I would love to hear from you - though I doubt we have many/any of them here). Actually I do know a few and have been begging them to advise me but even they are scared - which is a bad sign. I'd ask Trina or Annie or Estrella if they could please cough up their home tapings from back in the olde canyon days ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2008 01:10:47 -0700 From: Subject: NJC Just Roll Tape with Stephen Stills I was so swept and blown away by this CD. So many long ago memories. Just magical. I swear it is true about that old magnetic tape they used to record on - it IS so much warmer and richer in sound. Ahh. That was one of the biggest impressions on me. The other was that it brought forth a long ago memory of singing So Begins the Task with my old friends back in 1969-1970. We lived in a then-remote area by the ocean and would scale down cliffs to a landing in a cove by the water. The "authorities" would try but could never reach us there - heehee. Most everyone could break out a tune by ear and we had a regular songlist that we would sing - lots of CSN, early Joni, some Beatles, Leonard Cohen by way of Judy Collins and even adventurously a bit of Tull, Zeppelin and Blind Faith. I mostly vaguely recall the songs but this one from Stills I had completely forgotten until I heard it again in this compilation. Then I thought of how so many years later I happened to get to know people here who helped me kind of recreate those wonderful times and who could break out even more sophisticated songs by ear (Hi Victor and Paz) My few other impressions is 1) that Stills kind of plays guitar like a piano at times, 2) I think he remains the musical heavyweight behind CSN and CSNY, and 3) for some reason I am hearing a lot of Joni elements in his music. It's all just wonderful. Highly recommended. On another note, I think it was Randy who mentioned the program on talented autistic children and that it featured Stills' son Henry. As a bit of trivia, Henry is named after Stills best friend photographer Henry Diltz. Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2008 09:13:21 +0100 From: "Steve T." Subject: Re: V2008 #3 & Vanity Fair Funny someone mentioned Estrella (circus girl), she is also mentioned as a real person an article I found yesterday. There is some interesting things said about Joni's songwriting proccess in the early years and the men she was seeing. It's also about Carly Simon and Carole King; hmm might be an excerpt from that new book folks keep mentioning. I was actually looking for som bio info. on King and was really pleased when I found this article: http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2008/04/musicgirls200804 (9 pages guys!) P.S. AND yes, Sondre Lerche is most fab - I've seen him live twice. As far as I know, the show was never released on DVD. As you probably know, it was the first in a series on Turner's TNT network. It was also never broadcast in Australia. One lovely list member managed to transfer a videotaped copy onto DVD and sent it to me so, I'd be happy to pay it forward if you like. Just write to me off list and I'll get my old DVD burner up and running. Thanks once again, Bob, for another fine bunch of covers. An interesting grouping but there were really two highlights for me. One was Cass Elliot singing I Had a King.. I was not so impressed as you by the Two Grey Rooms cover. I have heard much better covers of this song and I must say, apart from Joni herself, I much prefer this song being sung by a man. So far, my favourite version of this song is by Steve Polifka. The biggest highlight from this volume for me was The Chris Lawrence Quartet's cover of Last Chance Lost. This has to be the find of the year. It's gorgeous. I love the slow intro and it just gets better from there. and the xylophone is to die for. Dreamy. It's unique from Joni's version yet still faithful to the overall feel of the song. Where are these people from? Her accent does not sound North American. I'm gonna have a little Joni covers party next month when volume 100 comes along. I don't know how you do it, Mr Muller. You are tireless. What an asset you are to this little community. I'm always available to you when you need any help in this fine endeavour. Some of us met up in Washington, D.C. for a mini fest and the concert at College Park. We all went for a memorable night at a fabulous Ethiopian restaurant. Last week I went back to Washington for a 4 day conference. Gorgeous time to be there. On the last night there was a showing of a documentary on the struggle for teacher rights in Oaxaca. The group all wanted to go out for dinner so I followed them through the streets and down an alley to.... You guessed it. The very same restaurant as ten years ago, out of all the restaurants in Washington, D.C. Another big surprise was walking down to Lambda Rising bookstore on the first night and meeting Christopher Rice at a book signing. I can assure you, even better looking in person! Les came out to wonder: Let's just say that you were able to ask the ladies of the canyon some questions. If you had Trina or Annie or Estrella sitting in front of you, what would you ask them? ***** Wow. What a great question, Les! Questions of a thousand Joni dreams.... First, I would sing this ("a little bit corny"): It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, A beautiful day for a neighbor. Would you be mine? Could you be mine?... It's a neighborly day in this beauty wood, A neighborly day for a beauty. Would you be mine? Could you be mine?... I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you. I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you. So, let's make the most of this beautiful day. Since we're together we might as well say: Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won't you be my neighbor? Won't you please, Won't you please? Please won't you be my neighbor? Then, after they made me welcome in, I would say: "Hey, Annie Sweetie! Are you going to put some hash in those brownies today? Yeah! Let's sit around the shanty, mamas, and put a good buzz on. But what's with all these cats and babies? Yikes, ya gotta be careful where you walk! And be careful with that rocking chair. Someone is always there under the runners." "Trina, I love your wampum beads! Can I look in your drawing book?" "Oh, Estrella. I'm so glad to meet *you*, too! You are like Cirque de Soleil, coloring up our sunshine hours, pouring music, sweet music, down the canyon. And where ever did you get that beautiful shawl?" "Annie, these flowers you have gathered are just gorgeous. I love the way you put them round the room. Hey, I know! (bright as a neon light) Let's get JONI! We'll rent her a grand piano. Where *is* she? Where is Willy? Where is their house? They can come over and put on some kind of harmony! And then if Joni goes into one of her creative trances, I'm gonna put the moves on Willy (I would be his lady all my life), because Joni is going to leave him anyway, you know, and Neil is going to write the most heartbreakingly-beautiful song about that...." Damn! Ringing telephone. Gotta go do my best, and good business. (But if I had my way, I'd just walk through these doors and wander, down the canyon.....) Love, Patti P.
