In fact, I'd say playing my real guitar is much, much easier than this game. For Pete's sakes, songs like Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" were hard for me in the game when on a real guitar this was the first song I ever learned. Simple really. Plus, like a real guitar, I kept my fingers up (which is normal for movement) rather than keeping them lightly on the colored buttons so all I'd have to do is press them...hence I kept missing the right colored buttons. > However, if a Joni song was included on this game, what one do you think would work best? Happy April, y'all (a little early for those NOT on digest)- time to flip over the calendar page and flip open the jewel case to see what the new month has in store for us for Joni covers. And perusing these titles, I see lots of the usual; that is to say the UNUSUAL...recordings from all over the world and decades. So let us tarry not, but rather get right to it. As is my custom, I do want to sincerely acknowledge Mark-Leon & Paul who chipped in to help with this one - thanks ONCE AGAIN guys for your invaluable assistance. No April foolin'! For those of you who just want the tunes, here they are: http://tinyurl.com/2lkwso And for those of you who like my play-by-play, here's what you'll find in the file this time: 1. Cordelia - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: The first of many Scandinavian entries in this month's offering - we all know how y'all love Joni up there. This jazz cover from 2004 features an assortment of sounds, a nice clean and lean guitar solo. electric piano solo, and lots of strings which is a different sound for this one. You just never know what to expect with Joni covers! 2. Chris Laurence Quartet - Last Chance Lost: Yes, you heard it right...a cover of Last Chance Lost, the first of a couple of 90's Joni covers on this volume. Norma Winstone (who's also recorded BYT) adds a sultry vocal to the Quartet's jazz arrangement, and it brings out the melodic beauty in this song. I always love the sound of the vibes, and this track doesn't do anything to change my mind. Now if only Bettye Lavette would record HER take... 3. Sandro Dominelli - Two Grey Rooms: Ah, I love love love this beautiful song, and this version is one of the finest. Sandro is a drummer, a Canadian jazz musician - not sure who provides the vocal but she does a stellar job. 4. Sarah Slean - All I Want 5. Sarah Slean - Both Sides Now 6. Sarah Slean - Woodstock 7. Sarah Slean - Free Man In Paris - In April of 2007, Sarah Slean took the stage with the CBC Radio Orchestra and performed this 4-song mini-tribute to Joni as part of the "Great Canadian Songbook" concert. These arrangements are very original, full of warmth and beauty, and Sarah's vocals are right on. 8. Cass Elliot - I Had A King: This one comes from an April 40 years ago! On April 28, 1968 Mama Cass performed this on an Andy Williams TV special. Unreleased and a real rarity. Of course you don't need me to tell you that she can sing - she also recorded a studio version of "Sisotowbell Lane" that we featured on a previous volume. 9. Dorothy Scott - All I Want: A fine singer-songwriter in her own right, Dorothy offers up her unique and vulnerable-sounding vocal over piano. Trivia - One of Dorothy's albums features Brian Blades, then again who hasn't he played with? 10. Caecilie Norby - Both Sides Now: This live recording is from her 2004 release, sung in a chanteusse style. Ms Norby is a European jazz singer, don't know much more than that about her. I do like this arrangement and her laid-back softly spoken-sung take on it though. 11. FFM - A Case Of You: A different-sounding ACOY, with a whole different guitar riff, some harmonies and some other colors one doesn't typically get with covers of this one - almost a little country flavor to it, what with the twangy guitars. 12. Frank Hammersland - Night Ride Home: Norwegian pop artist Frank Hammersland (formerly with Pogo Pops) turns in an enjoyable cover of NRH, taken from his Arpil 2007 release "So Easily Distracted". 13. R.J. Malloy - Urge For Going: A luthier from Punta Gorda, Florida, RJ recorded some of his favorite songs last year and this Joni chestnut was among them. His voice is not the strongest, but he is a good guitarist as you would expect, though it sounds at times like a string or two is out of tune. 14. Eishu - Both Sides Now: From Japan, Eishu has previously graced us with a cover of "The Circle Game". Her gentle jazz take on the franchise is pretty, and the trio supports her ably. 15. Wo'Xang - Shadows And Light: After a zillion or so acapella BYT's I have to say that I was VERY excited to see an acapella group tackle this harmonically complex song - and Austria's Wo'Xang, and if you're curious about the name, the "Wo" means women and the "Xang" stands for the Austrian dialect for singing. All that being said, these ladies have lovely voices and they work very well together. 16. Kluvers Big Band - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: A nice big band sound and lively original arrangement from Denmark, and a smooth vocal singing Joni's lyric. You gotta love the way these guys swing, they keep the groove going without coming on too strong. So we open and close with two different Goodbye Pork Pie Hat covers from Denmark, span 40 years and a couple of other continent too. Just another day in the always surprising world of Joni covers. And Joni is surely saying: "GOOD ON YOU, AL!" He has the courage and the grace to save this place. He holds out a candle and he shines it in. J'avoue (I must confess) that I felt very both sides now watching him last night. Bittersweet. As he said, about not becoming President: "Would that it were so...." (huge sigh) but then again, maybe "bad dreams are good in the great plan", because if he were President, he wouldn't have had time to focus 100% on saving the planet. He said: "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Reminds me of an Ernest Hemingway quote: "Life breaks us all. And some grow stronger in the broken places." Here is more on his initiative: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/apr/01/climatechange.usa Now if only somebody (TIC! I said send me somebody, who's strong and somewhat sincere....) could come up with a plan for "a dream that the wars are done." We're not going to fix that one up, too easy. Love & Peace, Patti P. I'd forgotten it is the 1st track of Shadowland. k. d. sings it beautifully. It brings back a flood of lovely...not so much memories as impressions of a time gone by. But k. d. lang didn't write this song. I had to look and was surprised (don't know why, it fits) that it was written by Chris Isaak. If not, could someone with a pristine copy help me out? Thanks! I have been lurking for some time. Thanks to everyone for for the updates as Joni and Herbie released their albums, and for the insightful commentary. The heads-up on some of the concerts has been helpful, and the essays that people have taken the time to write have been a pleasure to read. How blessed I am to live in Los Angeles! The last few months have been a musical feast. Stevie Wonder at the Greek theater (the extent to which the work of this loving and brilliant man has informed my consciousness became clear on that glorious night). Herbie Hancock, at Campbell Hall in Santa Barbara (On the drive up the rain stopped just as the 101 neared the ocean. The sun broke through the majestic multicolored clouds and reflected off the ocean as the title cut from "Shine" unfolded... Herbie's "Maiden Voyage" was transcendent). Joni at the Thelonious Monk Institute awards (a gorgeous "Tea Leaf Prophecy" and rousing "Hana"). James Taylor and Carole King at the tiny Troubadour (pure joy). Last month at the EchoPlex, the singular Rickie Lee Jones, whose work I didn't really know (and who blew me away with her passion, daring, musicianship, fearlessness and heart). And finally, the magnificent angel that is Sondre Lerche, Oddmund's fellow Norwegian (with his sets at the Troubadour that prove he is the most soulful, joyful, intelligent, charming, exciting, beautiful, brilliant musician of his generation -- see him if you can.) "River: The Joni Letters" continues to give and give. "The Tea Leaf Prophecy" is as extraordinary as it is heartbreaking. The phrasing is exquisite! All the musicians on the album. Tina. The whole thing just keeps getting better. Also, TLP brought me to a reconsideration of CMIAR, and I am SO happy for that! It was always one the least appealing of her albums for me, and now, well, it's finally there for me. I can finally hear it! Shine? I had a tough time with the lyrics at first (when they were printed before the release), and then with the synth, but now I couldn't care less about the synth and love the lyrics. One of her best albums, and on heavy rotation. When it comes on in the car, I am instantly transported. I have come to love "Shine". This great album has been discussed at length here, so I will leave it at that. I've enjoyed the many discussions on the list, and I thank you all again for the posts: sometimes informative, and sometimes just plain interesting. And thanks in advance for the DVD info. Oh also, as someone else mentioned, if you can see "Green Flag Song", do! Best, David ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2008 22:52:40 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Alison Moorer. You can hear it here. If you just want to get to the Joni part it starts at 7:13. http://www.mlive.com/cafe/index.ssf/2008/03/allison_moorer.html Later she briefly mentions Earle showing her how to play BSN in open G "the way Joni played it".
