"So much sweetness"! This is very cool. I just went to google something and the black screen says: "We've turned the lights out. Now it's your turn - Earth Hour." I just love world-wide events. "I think it's so groovy now, that people are finally getting together." Shine on the dazzling darkness! I'm going to get my little Onochord flashlight and beam little love lights all across the universe. (I know, "I'm a little bit corny.") And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me, shine until tomorrow, let it be. I wake up to the sound of music, Joni Mitchell comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be. I'm lucky to live in an area where it is dark at night. I can go out on my deck with the stars and the clouds to read (as long too many clouds don't get in my way), And at night the stars, they put on a show for free. And, darling, you can share it all with me, that's what I said, keep on telling you That right smack dab in the middle of town , I found a paradise that's trouble-proof. And if this old world starts a getting you down, there's room enough for two up on the roof, up on the roof, up on the roof. Everything is all right, every thing is all right. You got the stars above and the (now NO) city lights below, let's go up on the roof. Don't ignore all the stars above you! Build your dreams to the stars. Paint another starry night again, man! I have not even scratched the surface of the sampler or sequencer. I use it mostly for sounds and there is a hell of a palette there. When I need a fast sequence I still use my Ensoniq TS-10 which is such a joy to use since it is so user friendly and you can have modules hooked up to it as well. They are pricy but I was able to nab one new for $1,800 and managed to get the two piano cards for it as well. Even though I am no longer a dealer I could still get one for around the $2000 range if you need one. Not cheap, though. RR I had commented about that when I first heard it too. I have a Motif 8ex and I hear alot of the sounds from that board on Shine. I also think some of the piano sounds are from there and not necessarily a real acoustic piano. I agree. But i can't find any references on the album sleeve. How's that possible? I mean, usually if an artist uses another artist's work, then it'll be informed on the album sleeve. Carly - Nobody Does It Better another question : Why did Joni pick Off Night Backstreet to be the only single from DJRD, instead of Talk To Me (which i think the strongest song from the album)? ____________________________________________________________________________________ You rock. Planet Waves is a great album to get if you're a Dylan fan OR if you're a Band fan. The Band backs Dylan up for the first time in the studio since the Basement Tapes were recorded. The're on the Before the Flood album too. They are always so raw and simple that sometimes it is a breath of fresh air. Another demo-type album that I recently got turned on to is the Paul Simon Songbook. That album is to Simon & Garfunkel what Just Roll Tape is to CSN and Stephen Stills solo work. I love hearing the unadorned solo voice/guitar sound too. If for no other reason than it makes it easier for novices like me to learn the songs. :) > However, I will say the inclusion of "Treetop Flyer" was not needed. Yeah, that one was kind of out of place, eh? It was obviously recorded much, much later. It is a good version, though, I love the Dobro. > There are many songs on here that really display Stephen's singing (and range) at the time. Not only does this display his range it also shows how he could use his voice to really express the song. Let me explain as that in itself doesn't make sense. He sounds sweet (something I wouldn't describe Stephen Stills) in "Judy." He really sounds sweet and sincere and almost boyish in that particular track. He could sing very tenderly, when he wanted to. And then, again, he could really belt it out, too. Buffalo Springfield's Hung Upside Down is a good example of the latter. The song "Judy", I'm sure, was written for his girlfriend at the time, Judy Collins, whose album he had just finished working on when Just Roll Tape was recorded. Its pretty well known that Suite: Judy Blue Eyes was written for Ms. Collins as well. She was probably watching as he recorded these demos. I love knowing the backstories to songs. It gives them a sense of life that they wouldn't have for me without knowing who or what the songs were about. > I have to say my favorites on here are (as far as new/old songs go that we haven't heard before) The Doctor Will See You Now, Dreaming of Snakes, and Know You Got To Run (which has been heard somewhat but is very different here). Yeah, Know You've Got To Run is almost unrecognizable here. Totally different from the arrangment (w/ banjo) on the Stephen Stills 2 album. Anyone recognize Bumblebee as an early version of Love Gangster from the Manassas album? Again, totally unrecognizable. (Almost.) :) > In the end, this demo type album makes me wish Stephen Stills really would have released something as simple as this--guitar and vocals with no studio overdubbing. He did, much later in his career, Stills Alone released in 1991. Sadly, out of print. > Although I like some of Stills' solo, I will say sometimes he adds too much of this guitar and that guitar and his bandmember's guitar and then drums and percussion and keys and this and that, you know what I mean? Don't get me wrong, I even like those songs but I think sometimes he failed to realize that the magic of his songs were in him and the songs themselves....not what you add to the song... Now, I think Stephen does a purdy good job of making a richly produced album without overdoing it. You want an example of an overproduced album, look no further than George Harrison's All Things Must Pass. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE that album. It is absolutely in the running to be in my Desert Island Top 5. But, George would be the first to tell you, he laid it on too thick. It was just what he wanted at the time, but he said he would've done it differently if he had it to do again. Some of those songs have track after track after track laid on them, with tons of reverb, to boot. George wanted a big sound, and he got it. But some of it is just too big. I still love it though. And if you get the CD rerelease it has some of the demo versions (which we both obviously are into) of those songs. Nice. (e.g track 9 contains a sample from .... ) Yes, I did notice after listening to DJRD for 28 years that she was using the Satisfaction lick. I think because the chords are minor and different that it does not resemble Satisfaction enough to be a legal problem. Neil Young's "Mr Soul" uses it, too-I also did not notice this until reading that Young said so. I suppose the Stones could have hired a lawyer but they have probably borrowed a few riffs in their time as well and may not want to open that can of worms. Samples are another matter-when they first started, people just used them without permission. Eventually the courts had to decide it was not legal, so now you have to pay a royalty to use them.
