It baffles me too, how many do not see that what you sow you reap, whether it is personally or as a larger entity. Being the largest arms dealer in the world makes the USA a very unsavory character if we were to look at each country as a personality. I love the diverse beauty of this land & its people, the vision of our country's founders, & the opportunities that many are able to create for themselves here. But overall, I think the quality of life here, culturally speaking, is becoming dismal. And that comes from the top down. Personally, my quality of life is very good so this isn't about me- I live in a beautiful area, own a great home, & have a great life in general. A friend of mine who just spent a lengthy time traveling throughout South America raved about the people he met & the countries he visited saying how distorted a view the people in our country have of those countries. I think the POV that this country is the greatest on earth is indeed distorted. And why is it necessary to think of oneself as superior anyway? A need to be superior indicates a deep fear that one is actually inferior. Both insane perceptions of the ego. My friend, sad to leave but ready to return home to the US, was very reflective of his journey & his life & wrote that he felt our country has lost its soul. I think he may be right. We are in deep need of restoration. There are far too many people who are struggling & stressed & going without in this supposedly top rate wealthy county. Although our democracy & our 4th estate media are highly dysfunctional I do believe that on more personal levels, there is much to be admired about the passion & activism among many people in this country who are working hard to make a difference. But if we had a leader who go clean house, not unlike the story of Jesus who turned over the merchant tables in the church (trying to remember my Sunday School story), we could begin to retrieve our country back from the abyss it appears to be perched on. B> There is little tolerance for understanding that as the US sows violence in the world, it engenders the same, and it will be directed back upon them. Logical - something we learn in the schoolyard. But considered a treasonous thought by most even here in the heart of 'liberal' America. It is such a contradiction, in a country of highly educated people (relatively speaking) that takes such great pride in the rights & responsibilities of citizenship. What I am not yet clear on is : What is the missing element, the corrective required, to truly allow for open debate of all ideas? Particularly difficult in a society dominated by a superficial media that has abandoned its responsibility to inform honestly and dispassionately, such that democracy can be an exercise and result instead of just a meaningless adjective. I am sorely disappointed in what I've seen of American democracy and adherence to its founding principles.< ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2008 09:10:39 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Crosby Rocks the Cradle NJC Ooppss, it is Thursday, not Tuesday as I mistakenly wrote ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2008 09:16:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Monika Bogdanowicz Subject: NJC Just Roll Tape with Stephen Stills Well, I finally have listened to this album. I had gotten it from the library a few days ago. Now I'm thinking it may have already been mentioned on here but I wanted to add my say. So here it is, right? First off, I really enjoy this album to the point that I'll probably buy it in the near future. I always enjoy when and if any artist I like releases demo type albums. They are always so raw and simple that sometimes it is a breath of fresh air. So since I like some of Stephen Stills' solo material as it is, this rocks. However, I will say the inclusion of "Treetop Flyer" was not needed. There are many songs on here that really display Stephen's singing (and range) at the time. Not only does this display his range it also shows how he could use his voice to really express the song. Let me explain as that in itself doesn't make sense. He sounds sweet (something I wouldn't describe Stephen Stills) in "Judy." He really sounds sweet and sincere and almost boyish in that particular track. Then in something like "Dreaming of Snakes," he sounds ominous with the tone of the song. I have to say my favorites on here are (as far as new/old songs go that we haven't heard before) The Doctor Will See You Now, Dreaming of Snakes, and Know You Got To Run (which has been heard somewhat but is very different here). I also love the Suite: Judy Blue Eyes rendition on the album. However, I haven't heard a version of it from any year that I didn't like. In the end, this demo type album makes me wish Stephen Stills really would have released something as simple as this--guitar and vocals with no studio overdubbing. Although I like some of Stills' solo, I will say sometimes he adds too much of this guitar and that guitar and his bandmember's guitar and then drums and percussion and keys and this and that, you know what I mean? Don't get me wrong, I even like those songs but I think sometimes he failed to realize that the magic of his songs were in him and the songs themselves....not what you add to the song... -M - --------------------------------- Never miss a thing.
