(I can't believe I missed this one! Merde alors!) Up Close And Personal With Nanci Griffith By DONNA LARCEN | COURANT STAFF WRITER March 24, 2008 The best singer-songwriters take their own life experience and translate it into stories that are personal and universal. Nanci Griffith is one of the best... ....Griffith made pleas for peace in her song "The Flyer," amending its last lyric to "I wish that you could tell me now, Will all the troops be flyin' home tonight?" She expressed her support for Barack Obama before singing "It's a Hard Life," hoping that the line in the third verse, "The fat man in front of me Is calling black people trash to his children" will become obsolete...." Here's the whole thing: http://www.courant.com/business/realestate/hc-griffithrev0324.artmar24,0,5884773.story I was cheered to see that she supports Obama, and made pleas for peace, but *very* sad to see that her lifelong best friend Mary Margaret died just a month ago (rare blood disease). It must have been so difficult for her to sing "There's a Light Beyond These Woods". Shine on all our loved ones who have gone before us. This brings up an important point. Namely, the double standard that Obama is being held to. Horrible, intolerant, and IMHO far worse statements are uttered by white evangelicals all the time. And white politicians (Republicans mostly) who associate with them are rarely called upon to renounce, or even distance themselves from, these statements. Never mind turn their backs forever upon the person who uttered them. Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell say that 9/11 was God's punishment for our toleration of homosexuality, feminism, and other sins. Yes, yes, I know that Wright has made the claim that America brought 9/11 on itself. But, his claim is that it was the actions of the US Government that we elected that led to 9/11. And sure enough, bin Laden himself has named specific actions by the US Government as his justification for launching that attack and others against the US. Even the US intelligence community acknowledges the effect of our actions abroad causing unforeseen retaliation against us. They call it 'blowback'. The white evangelicals, on the other hand, specifically blame the victims. They were killed because of their wickedness, because they tolerated gays, and abortion, and blah, blah, blah. A perfect recent example is John Hagee who regularly denounces gays, catholics, and other groups, and blames Hurricane Katrina on the wickedness of the people of New Orleans. And he endorses John McCain. In fact, McCain specifically asked for his endorsement. Not only has no one demanded that McCain throw Hagee under the bus, McCain still makes campaign appearances with Hagee (he needs those votes). He actually shares a stage with him, gets his picture taken, etc. And apparently that's okay. McCain has ignored it and that's that, it was hardly a speed bump, never mind derailing his campaign the way Obama's is being derailed (his polls are taking a beating because of this). Total double standard. I posted a whole other message debating whether Wright's words are defensible or indefensible, but that's beside the point here. The point being that its odd that this new rule that politicians are responsible for the words of their pastors suddenly comes into effect only when a black Democrat is involved. Funny how that is.
