It was a documentary titled The Bridge. The movie is about suicides committed at the Golden Gate Bridge. In 2004, there were 24 people chose to end their lives there. And the relation with Joni? Well, in the middle of the movie, there was an audio clip that surprised me. It was dam da dam... dam da dam.... (DONT blame me for inaccuracy, onomatopoeia can vary within cultures) I thought Oh damn! That song! It was Man From Mars. Since i lost you I can't get through the day Without at least one big boo-hoo I always thought the song was simply about love. But, the movie opened another dimension of the song. It can be also translated into a feeling of losing a friend who committed suicide (which must be painful, right?). Hooray that you got a chance to see Bob Shepard again!!!! I remember us sitting together a little over a year ago watching him acknowledge us in a kind nod as we gave our silent admiration for a solo! It seems that Joni's friends never forget her and treasure her. Marcus Miller too??? Oh my goodness! I'm so happy you got an opportunity to see him on the same stage with these greats! That had to be an awesome performance! Thank you again my friend. You gave a fine review! (I am also exhausted so cut me some slack ;-) The overwhelmingfeeling is, my God, how did I get so lucky? I remember when I joined the listin 1997, none of us had seen Joni perform live in some 15 years and neverexpected to ever see her perform live again. When she did the '98 tours wethought we had died and gone to heaven. Then magically there were more eventsand art exhibits and the PWWAM taping and the 2000 tour and we were alive andthrashing ecstatically once again. Just have to say that once again I won theJoni lottery tonight at the Herbie taping. Lesli and I are the lucky girls. But I digress... We showed up - about 400 of us - and comfortably packed into a small soundstage. Lesli and Pete got front row seats and I got the back but was onlyabout 35 feet away from the stage. I spotted Joni's good friend CharlesValentino ("Val") sitting on a couch nearby with Herbie's wife and daughterand thought this was a good omen. The stage director then somewhatbreathlessly started telling us that we were in for some really big surprisestonight and that he has done 31 tapings with other artists but this one wasgoing to take the cake, so to speak. So Herbie and the musicians come out - King of Sax Bob Sheppard, Joni bandmate Vinnie Coliauta, Marcus Miller on bass and amazing Lionel from Benin onlead guitar. They play and then everyone keeps talking about "surprises."They do a Q and A from the audience with Herbie. One guy asks why Herbiedecided to choose Joni's works for the last album. Of course, Herbie raved onall about Joni. Then he brings her out! She looked absolutely gorgeous. Shewas wearing a fantastic sort of print coat dress that I saw her in during the2000 BSN tour which looks like silk jersey and shows the marbled bowling ballof earth and Krishna swinging on a crescent moon and the stars and comets. (Irecall back then being amazed that she found the perfect Judgment of the Moonand Stars dress). She then performed the most astounding version of River -all jazz and Herbie inflected style. It was just stunning. Joni's singingvoice is amazingly good right now - I felt like I was transported back intime. She then performed Tea Leaf Prophecy and then, surprise, Sonya Kitchellcame onstage to back her up on Hana. Everyone was on their feet. I wasthinking, well, at least in this setting there will not be anyone bleating out"I Love You, Joni" but yes there was! And it was her own best friend Val whoyelled it out with a big grin on his face. It was great! There was some moreQ & A with Herbie and now I was just mesmerized by his thoughts. Those whoare inspired by Mr. Obama will truly feel quite the same listening to Herbie.I must say with all affection that he likes to talk and expound as much asJoni and every sentence is a gem. Personally, I felt like I was listening toevery lesson and word of wisdom ever imparted to me by my father. It maysound weird, but it was very affirming to hear a great like Herbie say so muchof what my dad always said to me over the years, be it the true value of lifeor creativity. A few sound bites from Herbie - success is not measured byfame, celebrity, wealth or power but by how much you give, how much youencourage and by your compassion. He also said that other human beings arenever the enemy - that only you can be the enemy and you have to "wake up"from that. Sonya came back on and sang a very jazzy rendition of All I Want. Yes, I wasjust pinching myself at this point. Herbie also performed Watermelon Man, Cantaloupe and his mindblowing MaidenVoyage - right up there at the top of the most beautiful classical jazzcomposition you will ever hear. As an encore he brought in artist C Minus toplay the turntable to Rockit. Lesli and I talked by cell phone all the way home just ranting and raving. You all can see it yourself on Yahoo on April 1st! Then came a group singalong as the children crooned "Our circle is ready to start/Come share ideas, come share your heart" over and over. This is the Miracle Project, subject of the documentary "Autism: The Musical," which has its debut Tuesday on HBO . It chronicles the 2005-6 incarnation of Ms. Hall's program by tracking a rambunctious cast of children with autism - and their parents - as they prepare to put on a show. The documentary features Wyatt, 10 years old at the time of filming, who expresses uncanny insights about bullies and love; Henry, also 10, the son of the musician Stephen Stills and a fountain of knowledge about all things dinosaur; Adam, a curly-haired, 9-year old cellist; Lexi, a shy 14-year-old singer capable of performing Joni Mitchell songs with transcendent ease; and Ms. Hall's son, Neal, 12, an unpredictable blond charmer. Tricia Regan, the director of the documentary, said the project got rolling four years ago when her friend Janet Grillo, the mother of an autistic boy, asked for advice. "She and other parents wanted to make a film that reached beyond the autism community and expressed to the world how great their kids are. Not alike but both have the gift to inspire in different ways. That's why I highly recommend watching the Herbie taping when it comes on Yahoo. It's rare anymore to hear public figures speak at length, in depth with substance and wisdom. I'm still somewhat amazed by last night - (for me) Herbie kind of channeling my dad. Some of what he said was word for word what I grew up hearing. Not the typical cliched words or common sense, but real depth. It shook me and was a bit supernatural. Beyond that, I really think people will love to hear what he has to say. He is a real sweet man and I am so happy and reassured that he is one of Joni's best friends. I don't think she could do any better. **** Yes, they both have the gift to inspire. "Sweet inspiration." Don't the words "inspire" and "spirit" have the same root? Hold on....let me check etymonline.com.... inspiration c.1303, "immediate influence of God or a god," especially that under which the holy books were written, from O.Fr. inspiration, from L.L. inspirationem (nom. inspiratio), from L. inspiratus, pp. of inspirare "inspire, inflame, blow into," from in-"in" + spirare "to breathe" (see spirit). Inspire in this sense is c.1340, from O.Fr. enspirer, from L. inspirare, a loan-transl. of Gk. pnein in the Bible. General sense of "influence or animate with an idea or purpose" is from 1390. Inspirational is 1839 as "influenced by inspiration;" 1884 as "tending to inspire." Yep! Remember "et cum spiritu tuo"? Whenever I hear either of them speak, I just nod my head and feel a sense of peace and relief that there are still people in the public arena who have wisdom and, imo, goodwill toward men and women. So deep, not superficial. And who among could not love Herbie just for his tribute to Joni, that won him the freakin' ALBUM OF THE YEAR, and for how he hoisted that Grammy in the air and said: "Joni Mitchell, Joni Mitchell, Joni Mitchell -- thank you so much!" He speaks for us so I look forward to hearing him speak more. Kakki, I'm glad you shared that you felt Herbie was channeling your Dad. I had a very similar experience with k.d. lang last Sunday night. I was prepared for some soul-stirring after Barbara's magical experience, plus it was two months almost to the hour that my Mother died. PLUS it was k.d.'s Hymns of the 49th Parallel that I found in my Mom's CD player the next day. So I tried to steel myself for an emotional experience, hoping to just enjoy the music, yet I never anticipated the channeling that occurred for me. It was also supernatural. It was a great concert (amazing voice, just amazing), and when she gave a nod to her Canadian roots and said she was going to sing a Jane Siberry song with "really dense lyrics" (she held out her hand and rubbed her fingers together) and that singing this one is "always a journey", I sat up in my seat. Oh, boy. Here we go. The Valley. Not even halfway into the song tears started pouring down my cheeks. I was holding back from crying, without much success. I thought the words were like my Mother's, and at some point k.d.'s face actually morphed into my Mother's. My companion noticed it, too, and we clutched each other. I will never hear this song again without thinking it is her hymn to me, out from the 49th parallel or wherever she is, telling me to "hold on", love the best in everyone, suffer your losses, and chose good company by walking away from those who hurt you. Go for the lovely. (That's just my own personal explication de texte.) k.d.'s voice took me out to that spiritual borderline, or some mark of in between. Yes, supernatural is the word. And though you trust the light towards which you wend your way Sometimes you feel all that you wanted has been taken away You will walk in good company I love the best of you You love the best of me Though it is not always easy Lovely? lovely? We will walk in good company The shepherd upright and flowing You see... If you'd like to hear it, voila (get out the tissues): http://youtube.com/watch?v=lMDMA6FqvXY But back to the concert, next she sang Hallelujah and again, there was pure magic. When she ended the song, *everyone* immediately jumped to their feet and clapped and clapped and clapped. She put her hand to her heart, and took a very long, sustained bow. The longest bow I have ever seen. The whole show was laced with good will and good humor. She introduced each musician lovingly (called her drummer the "guru of positivity") and the mutual love and respect between them was the real deal. She was funny and playful, and patient with all the spontaneous "I LOVE YOU, k.d.!" shouts from the crowd. At one point she said: "You're a perky little bunch, aren't you?" She cracked everyone up when she pulled out her banjo and said she had discovered "it's a chick magnet." She did two encores and everyone left almost in a trance. All you could hear was people saying "wow" all over the place. Here's the Courant review (Charming kd. lang rules the Palace) review if you're interested: http://www.courant.com/entertainment/music/hc-langrev.artmar18,0,7422112.story On the Night Ride Home, Janis and I talked about how I lost it during The Valley. She said: "OMG, and did you see the video screen on that one? It looked like a hospital!" Thankfully, I did not even see that. I didn't need to. I was already back in the ICU (when all you wanted has been taken away), and headed for the light. Here's to deep, not superficial -- and walking in good company. I've been missing for a few months...from everyone..myself included...missing in these creepy reflections of past actions and the prices paid....you know what I mean...the "what ifs". I feel almost estranged from the Digest, although I definitely feel a terrible void...another loss. And so, here I am...Easter night. I read the Digest this morning...Easter Morning...actually, afternoon. Realized how much I miss you...and many thanks to all who turned us on to great articles. Lots of new names and new perspectives. Welcome! Many postings that are written so beautifully as the writer works through many feelings or an event in his or her life. Just wanted to wish you all a Happy Easter weekend! Life feels surrealistic to me...trying hard to emerge from a place, never named, that my dark, dark ladder can leave me in to rot. No transition....just Welcome to all who joined our family........ And Patti...sooooo great to read your postings again...your dream!!!! Wowee! And so to all JMDLER's that I've been so fortunate to know as friends, and to all possible new friends, I wish you peace...inner-peace and peace throughout our planet. I can't get my mind around China accusing the Dalai Lama of stoking Tibetan unrest to sabotage the Beijing Olympics...it's being unable to really climb up the ladder from sandy, gritty darkness to take a wee look into the light, only to read such crap, that keeps me retreating to the safety under the covers, safe from the sunlight and waiting for the night...the safety of darkness...know what I mean? I think about Joni and what she must feel as she works through the events in her life using her extraordinary and multiple talents. Every song she writes and sometimes puts to haunting melodies allows her to free herself from the chains of hurt...of anger...of love gone wrong and I think she might know closure...then her path is free and clear to welcome another adventure. Joni's translation of her perspective on her life, our planet, events that have knocked off our collective socks ....Joni realizes the connecting dots and begins with a new, perfectly blank page....a perfectly blank opportunity to start a new adventure that she then translates through the poetry of her words; the images, the colors, the textures that bring to closure a feeling, an event, culminating in yet another magnificent painting. There is absolutely not one soul who even suggests a similarity to Joni. That's how I feel, anyway. And I've been thinking...I really don't want to meet Joni...as overwhelming a moment as that may be...it would only be a snap-shot. I wish upon many stars that one day I could be with Joni...in her private world....and then I think she is so intensely private...what is the flow of her every day life? And I wonder if she really knows or cares about the power she has to unify people...to provide just the perfect spark for a new friendship. Joni's most incredible power is that she shares her many talents with the souls of our world, inviting each of us who are fortunate enough to know her work, to allow ourselves to go to the places that she invites us to explore....our inner-personal feelings. She freely shares her magic that we can then experience and maybe come to some conclusion in our own lives. Or, sometimes Joni is just so on target that she expresses something intensely personal within us with perfect precision...and we claim our personal closure with her magic. I'm probably not making very much sense...I feel as though I'm having difficulty expressing what I feel...what I think...I do want to share with you that the article about Joni and Carly and Carol and others disturbed me. I don't want an article about Joni to include any other public figure. There is not a human being in the world that can ring true in an article that is sacred in loyalty to Joni. There simply are no comparisons...not for me at least. And I really love Carol King and Carly Simon and so many artists....but not in the same sanctuary with Joni. Joni has the ability to reach deeply within our souls...she invites us and almost provides a challenge to us to explore and bring to conclusion something that has happened in our lives. Oh my...I'm rambling Rose here, aren't I? And so I'll hope that each of you has enjoyed something extra special in your lives today.
