No, I fully agree, I wouldn't be surprised if she was THE most politically active and influential first lady ever. One that that can be said against having an ex-first lady as president is that the ex-president might not be able to stay neutrally in the back ground. It sounds like her campaign has had to tell Bill to keep quiet a few times during the campaign. If he can't keep out of the public debates when / if she is president he could become her achilles heel. > But you do make a good point. There is no prerequisite for becoming > President. Though I think Joni's near shattered voice is probably from smoking, there is a thing called age, too. I believe the combo is probably responsible for the very limited range Our Queen is able to display these last 10 years. I'm also thinking that She is recording in what is probably the most up-to-date-state-of-the-art-digital-lawnmowing-babysitting-reroofing type studio available. Engineering/editing can eliminate a ton of unwanted sounds...so we may want to consider that She is helped out by super-audio-technology Even Billie Holliday/Judy Garland fans must admit that those last recordings can be sad to listen to...The voice is nearly buried under the abuse. Of course, Joni's advantage is that she isn't just a singer...I think her composing/painting/poet skills are what will make her remembered well into the future. Beethoven? Leonardo? Hey, I love both those guys and it seems Joni does, too....well..how could one not? As a huge fan of both, and especially Billie, I'd say Lady In Satin is one of the greatest recordings ever made. And as gorgeous as her voice was in her youth, it could have never portrayed such maturity and wisdom. The same can be said for many great singers, including Rosemary Clooney. The cynic in me believes that 'change' is the big catch-word of this election and nothing more than that. The main marketing ploy, the hook to get people to buy the product. Say what you like about Hillary and her sarcastic delivery, but I really think she made an excellent point when she made fun of Obama's alleged starry-eyed idealism. It is going to take a lot more than talk to get this country out of the 'massive mess we're in.' The Bush administration has ignored the concept of 'government by the people, for the people' for 7 years now and undoing and repairing the damage that came out of that is going to be a long, uphill battle. I will vote for the Democratic nominee. But in my heart of hearts, I am doubtful that any of the candidates will really affect real 'change.' I fear that the real power brokers have too much money, too much power, too strong a grip on our political process to make effective change possible. In my perception, this is probably a big part of the reason why there has been so much intense hatred directed toward Hillary from the Big Boys Club. I think there was a huge amount of resentment that a First Lady would dare to step out of her role of being 'the Nation's Hostess' or whatever the First Lady is supposed to and actually take an active part in the nation's government. I read a Vanity Fair article awhile back that talked about the relationship between the Clintons and the Gores during the first Clinton presidential campaign and how it deteriorated over the 2 terms in office. According to this article, Hillary was Bill's primary sounding board and advisor. Gore began to resent it. By the time Gore ran for president, he was disgusted by the Lewinski scandal and Bill was throwing most of his support toward Hillary's Senate bid, attending fund-raisers for Hillary and not giving much support to Gore. The article alleges that money that could have gone into Gore's campaign got sucked away to Hillary's instead. Now Hillary's in a position where it could be perceived that electing her would be like putting Bill in for another term. Wrong or right? Asset or liability? It all depends on your point of view. I think Hillary is a capable, intelligent person. I don't know that I like all of her positions and some of her voting record in the Senate is suspect. But I have always felt that she should have refrained from running for president, at least in 2008. The Democrats need to present a solid, united front to get the garbage that is in power now out. There is too much resentment and baggage attached to Hillary, right or wrong. My fear is that she cannot win a presidential election. Right now, the sniping that is going on between Hillary and Obama worries me. I fear that the party will be divided again, that crackpot Nader will suck away just enough votes, and we will wind up with McCain as president in 2009. I hope it turns out differently. I think the Democrats at least have 2 candidates this year that have enough personality and high-profile, if not charisma, to catch the ears and eyes of the public. I voted for Kerry but I never felt he had the 'star power' that sadly seems to be necessary to be elected President in this country. People seem to be sitting up and paying some attention to Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama. They could be a really strong partnership, but it seems to me like a fairly tense situation if Bill is going to sit in the background and give Hillary advice. Anyone dealing with Hillary will be in doubt as to whether they are talking to one or the other.... And the feminists would be bitter because they'd find they had only cast half their vote on a woman. The Gore-Clinton story is interesting, I can see how it would work. I wonder, and this is of course, well, a bit irrelevant, but I wonder what is going to happen to the Clinton marriage if she is not going to be president. I mean, you'd think there'd be some sort of a void. I guess Gore has been thinking that if Hillary had attended more to the traditional duties of the first lady and less to the political side, there wouldn't have been a Lewinski-gate. At least the lady has a sense of humor. I think the biggest trap is thinking that getting a candidate elected is going to fix everything (or anything). The real challenge is to keep the pressure on the winner to do what they promised. Just wondering if these gizmos work well and if they are user friendly. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- dlmessling@rcn.com http://www.sensibleshoes.vox.com - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 2008 18:57:02 -0800 (PST) From: KEVIN DOHENY Subject: Fave Joni "guest spot" It would have to be "will you love me tomorrow"...I love her hamonies and it's really one of my favorite songs ever by both carole king and the shirelles(who come from the next town over from me and my mom was lucky enough to see them at Passaic High school in the late 50's :) Back to Joan..lol.You really have to listen to it in headphones..From 1:50 on Joni tears it up!! When she sings..."meets the morning sun" uhhh! So beautiful!! She sings actually in the majority of the song(james also) Carole's voice is up front of course but it really is like a trio performance..I had no idea Joni sang with Seal..i am definetly going to check that out..Love Seal..A close second would be her work on David Crosby's brilliant If I could only remember my name..Laughing is one of my favorite songs ever and god, joni sounds so fabulous on it...She goes from a smooth alto harmony to the souring soprano in the end...If my ears don't decieve me "what are there names" contains what could be a fantasy pairing of Joni and grace slick..I know members of the airplane contributed heavily to the album..geez what I wouldn't give to have been at that recording session..Odds are I'd be too baked to remember afterwards..lol.. - --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Thanks for thinking of me, Patti, but I don't think I'll be able to make that show... good to hear of another venue that I might go to sometime though. I got tix to see Jackson Browne at the Oakdale in Wallingford on April 6th-but I don't think Ro wants to go-so I may have one to sell, if anybody's interested. Love to see that pink lotion in motion... I'm going to get a boat. And we can row it. Row, row, row your boat, gently down the river of changing faces, looking for an ocean of kalo mina lotion. Seems like many dim years ago since I saw him face to face, so this is an unexpected pleasure: Dear Pattie, I was recently in Chester CT having lunch with a friend of mine and I spotted the following tribute to Joni Mitchell music series being performed in Chester. Though you'd be interested. http://www.myspace.com/smalltownconcertseries ***** It always warms the cockles of my Joni heart and mind when someone hears something about Joni and associates her with me. Quel honneur, n'est-ce pas? Does anyone know these musicians? I'll have to check this out tomorrow. The more Joni fans in the world, the better! MY GOD THE WOMAN IS 64 i don't hear the other non-smoking Joans (Baez & Collins) sound NEARLY SO good Lena Horne likewise sounded better at 70 than she did at 20 the MOJO article deserves far more contemplation: ~When I interviewed her in 2004, she spoke openly for nearly six hours about, among many other things, the reasons for her disenchantment with the business, including 'asinine' critics who charged that smokinh had ruined her voice.~ GEEZ do any of us really realize WHAT A GREAT artist we have in Joni?????? ~MOJO: What about your voice? A lot of critics have complained that smoking caused you to lose your ability to hit the old high notes. Has it?~ WHAT an insulting STUPID question! u folk snobs who expect Joni to regurgitate her early work endlessly really grate on my nerves MY GOD PEOPLE do we even begin to comprehend what a TOTAL GENIUS joni is? light up an additive-free cigarette & plant a tree for our poor little planet ET ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2007 #592 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
