To oversimplify, she's running as an realist & he's running as an idealist. Here in Ohio, we vote in 6 days. The Obama campaign keeps running a radio spot where he's saying, "Some executives... make more in 10 minutes... than most families make in a year!" He doesn't say he'd cap wages, or re-instate capital gains tax, or raise taxes on the wealthy. I guess the message is, "Are you jealous of the rich? Then vote for me." He says he wants to close loopholes that help business export jobs from Ohio. Jobs are a big topic in Ohio (as they were in Michigan) because there *was* a lot of automobile assembly here. Pundits are saying that Hillary has to win in both Ohio and Texas. Since the momentum is with Obama, Hillary has to take the risk of turning negative. She has nothing to lose now. Obama is the new "teflon" candidate. Jim L. P.S. At least in my neighborhood, Hillary is out-spending Obama. I've received 3 phone messages & one postcard from Hillary but none from Obama. From: Patti Parlette sent a link to a stump speech wherein Hillary is poking fun at Obama's idealism. I was speaking of cult in the sense of "us and them." Hillary is part of the democratic "us," but sometimes when Obama talks it is as if she isn't. In regard to the war and Hillary's vote, I think her vote was level headed; what nobody could have predicted was that Bush would have dealt with it so insanely. It was important to be set to go to war if we needed to... if the weapons had been there and the UN had agreed. As for McCain and the war, perhaps this war will end in a few years regardless of who is in office. On the other hand, if we have a Democratic president, perhaps the war will still be unable to be ended soon like we are all hoping for. I agree with Jeff that Hillary's health plan is the most solid. Trial and error with this over time has perfected it. I'm excited about the possibility of this. Thanks for discussing this with me Kate. I will start with the Joni content . . . I saw k.d. lang in concert at the Opera House in Boston Saturday night and, although her performance was great beyond all my expectations, she didn't do either of the Joni songs from "Hymns of the 49th Parallel." She did do Neil Young's "Helpless," Jane Siberry's "The Valley," and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," which were all incredible. I had half-expected the concert to be all about her new "Watershed" CD, but she performed songs from throughout her 20+ year career. She was funny, chatty, and very likeable -- especially when she told the audience that Boston was her favorite place in the U.S. Even though I was disappointed not to hear "Jericho"or "A Case of You," k.d.'s performance was just spectacular. Great band, too. If you get a chance to see her during this tour, take it! You won't regret it. (Unless you insist on hearing Joni tunes.) From lower case k.d. lang to upper case ANNE SANDSTROM . . . I just finished reading Anne's new book "Trials," about her experiences with recurring cancer a few years ago and I think this book is a must-read, especially for those of us on the list who remember Anne's "trials." Of particular interest to listers may be the Acknowledgements section, in which Anne mentions 14 past and current listers. (You should buy the book just to see if you made the cut!) We have sort of a tradition here on the JMDL of supporting each other's musical efforts by attending each other's performances, buying CDs, etc., so I think it would be great if as many listers as possible could support Anne's literary efforts buy clicking on this link and buying "Trials." It's a great read, whether you know Anne or not! http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fAcctID=1377612 - --Bob ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? The first call came on the caller ID as "Hillary Clintn"--no "o" between "t" and "n." I thought, "That's a strange telephone identification!" I didn't get to the phone on time and blew it off. The following call was a live call and not Hillary's voice on a recording, from a campaign volunteer and I had a nice conversation with her. I told her I called the Archdiocese here concerning Hillary and left a message for the Archbishop (of whom I've had a run in with already concerning a sly priest who was looking and longing on backstreet corners and the hypocrite actually defended him underhandedly!) Well, I left word with the Archbishop that it was wrong to slam St.Mary's University for allowing Hillary Clinton to speak there on campus because of her stance on abortion. I said, "When you guys stop taking large sums of money donations underhandedly from affiliates of Planned Parenthood and other eugenic affiliates, all of who advocate abortion, then you can speak for what you supposedly believe in and not be looked upon as a sneak." The Clinton lady thanked me for that. I said, "You're more than welcome!" I also expressed to her that, "Hillary came off as mean and somewhat vicious in Rhode Island and a few other times and that it was turning people off and away from her and that I suggested another strategy." The lady said, "We do know that. She's had the wrong people advising her on what to say, but it's changed since." She was very nice and intelligent, too. I told her this family is going for both Hillary and Barack, depending on who they are and still pondering---most for Barack, but my mother for Hillary and another brother who used to vote Republican will probably go for Hillary or maybe even McCain or Huckabee (besides, my hen-pecked brother's wife is racist towards African ancestry and all I do is turn away from such breath-taking ignorance that I feel my own blood simmer and that ugly energy her side of family and children feel hovers in darkness, negativity and so damn sad and sickening and I can barely tolerate their presence even on the holidays so I stay away, that's all.) Then, the calls came in with Hillary's recorded voice again and I thought, "Man, Hillary's hitting the campaign trail here in Texas super-dooper heavy. Maybe they have this telephone number on re-dial through-out the day."---I don't know---that's why I say she's hitting it hard. Well, y'all have a good day. The weather is is beautiful after a bone-chilling night. The splendid portrait of the irascible folkie on "American Masters" (CPTV, 9 p.m.) titled "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song," it's from Jim Brown, who previously made "We Shall Overcome" and "The Weavers: Wasn't That a Time" traces the history of the man whose father was a pioneering musicologist and gained interest in the string music of the American South. Man! Anyhow, I think it is interesting to hear who everyone supports and their reasons (minus the cuckoo ones). My sister is torn between Obama and Clinton! She started out as a Clinton supporter but switched to Obama a few weeks ago. She now recently is almost swayed again towards Clinton after watching the Ohio debate and reading a few articles I sent her about O&C's healthcare plans. Her words were that "Hillary Clinton has substance and Barack Obama has style" and she wishes she could just "squeeze the two together and make the perfect candidate." She's not certain whether the country needs an aggressor to fight for America (Clinton) or a diplomat (Obama). Her absentee ballot is sitting on the table as she has a lot of thinking to do! My brother voted Hillary Clinton, my Father is not voting, and my Mother is not a U.S. citizen (and not particularly capable to vote even if she was). He is not some cult leader with mindless followers who are being emotionally manipulated. He is an intelligent, passionate man who many intelligent, thoughtful people see as a very positive alternative. I think he represents a new generation of leadership & that the number of young voters who are turning out for this election are part of that new direction. It is very refreshing to me. Sounds like this man brought a lot of joy to people, including Kakki's Mom. I loved hearing that story, Kakki. Your sweet boy, Julian, touched my heart. Killing you softly with his eyes and words. You have taught him the deeper meaning. No one can miss the beauty in that. How big is Papa Paz's family? Huge. You're Our Daddy. Sending you and John's family waves of comfort and compassion and love as you lay him to rest tomorrow, Patti P. P.S. Way too much death and death and death these days. Looking forward to some BIRTH soon, Alison in SLC! Bonne chance et bon sante to you and Amelia Louise. April, right? My Joni baby (Michael from Mountains) was born on April 12th. Good month for Joni babies! ; ) _________________________________________________________________ Shed those extra pounds with MSN and The Biggest Loser! http://biggestloser.msn.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2008 22:35:25 -0800 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: (NJC) For fans of 4-stringed instruments Heh. I don't know anything about the 'us & them' you speak of re Obama's message but from personal experience I can say that Hillary has not represented my POV in the past several years so maybe that is his reference point? You said, perhaps this war will end in a few years? Not sure what you mean by that. Regardless, I know most of us want that hopefully soon.
