I think it was in the segment about her time with Graham Nash: When he asked her to marry him, she mentioned remembering the women in her family and thought that perhaps she better not marry and instead go and live her own life - in a way wanting to do this also for them. Oops! I perked up right there. Now that's interesting, I thought - because of course as a descendant you can indeed resolve unfinished business for your parents and grandparents, etc., retrospectively. I really do believe that. But you can't do this by just declaring your intention or artificially re-route your life to this end, suffering in the process (Joni mentioned how hard this decision was). You only succeed by way of a side-effect: By living your own life the right way, learning compassion and growing beyond your limitations and upbringing. In so doing, you can fix it, also for them. Retrospectively, certain unresolved issues can be laid to rest and the circle will be broken (for you and future generations). Many people will snort derisively at this point. For others it's a very touchy and painful subject *, but it may be an important one to think about. Not just if you want to get somewhere with your own life, but what if you have kids?! If you're aware of a problem psychologically and spiritually and ignore it, your kids (and their kids) will have to deal with that particular burden some day, somehow. Awareness means responsibility and all that.. It's a real drag but true. I also had to grin - isn't it a great excuse for not getting married if you don't really want to? I'll have to remember that one just in case... (*) Living in Perth, Australia. Why I probably picked up on this just now is the present (re)current issue about "reconciliation" with aboriginal Australians. It'll be interesting to see what develops after the Australian government delivers its official and public apology for all the "mistakes" of the past. Why? It's the same story, just in a different time, continent, culture. We're all human, but view this same issue from myriad different viewpoints. For instance, if you happen to be aboriginal, all your ancestors (even from long ago) may still be around. If a person dies in your family, she/he usually remains close - in a different way of course, but always hovering, always present. Wrap your mind around that one and you'll see why there may be some urgency here to resolve unfinished business, even if it happened a very long time ago in the past. Grin - at least my great-grandma isn't breathing down my neck every day! (Or if she is, I am not aware of her..). So I guess it's essentially a very good, long-overdue move by the Aussie government (as it always helps to at least name and define issues) but I shudder to think of how lawyers may tear this effort to shreds in pursuit of their own agendas. At one of the Bob Dylan sites there is a "lyrical interpretation" archive that is has been compiled for use by members of the forum. Does JMDL have anything like this? Any plans to add such a thing at JMDL, if not? Or am I opening a Pandora's Box by asking this question? (long) Hello All, I've been thoroughly enjoying Tina Turner's take "Edith and the Kingpin" -- someone else said that it seemed the song had been written for her -- I also have that same feeling when listening to it. WOW, is all I can say. And although Leonard Cohen usually tries my patience, I am blown away by his rendition of "The Jungle Line." How amazing to treat that as a Beat poem with musical accompaniment. It feels completely idiomatic to me. He almost makes it seem as though his version came first and that Joni later decided to sing it after having written it as a poetry slam piece. I'm less thrilled by Luciana Souza's take on Amelia. I have her "Brazilian Duos" CD, which is great. Comparing the two recordings, I have to say that I wish they had chosen a more upbeat song for her to interpret. I feel that her take on "Amelia" is a bit lazy, predictable, and too diaphanous or something. No drama to it. I'd love to hear her do a bossa nova take on "Free Man in Paris" or something like that, where there is more rapid wordplay, and more opportunity to show off her vocal chops. I have a similar reaction to Norah Jones on "Court and Spark" -- it's beautiful, of course, but it seems to simply be, "hey, let's get Norah Jones in here to slap on her voice". No new ground being broken, other than Herbie's reharmonizations. And I'm a bit fearful for her that her voice is going to become a clichi due to overexposure. Joni's new version of "Tea Leaf" is interesting -- revisiting that song must be her musical farewell to her mother -- but the deterioration of her voice does bother me here, whereas in most of her work of the past 15 years, I'm able to hear her voice as a fine bottle of aged port wine (usually tawny). I find it so funny (funny funny and funny strange) that Joni is so cranky about people saying that smoking has changed her voice (I just read the recent Mojo article). It's so bloody *obvious* that it has changed her voice. I think that her denial about the smoking being a factor is perplexing, but I guess it's not surprising -- if one smokes like that, one is certainly a nicotine addict, and denial is the name of the addiction game. My dad quit smoking about 4 years ago after having smoked 2+ packs a day for over 40 years. He watched his mother die from cigarettes, and respiratory weakness runs very prominently in his family; but he honestly believed, until he had a CAT scan showing an area of lung destruction courtesy of emphysema, that he was going to be the proverbial cranky old man who lives to be a hearty 95 years old, despite a lifetime of poor health choices. Joni's denial strikes me as being in the same vein. The loss of an octave from your vocal range and the loss of flexibility and agility that is obvious in her voice is *not* the result of normal aging. I suppose she has earned the right to become a cranky, reality-bending old lady, but 64 strikes me as a bit early. She's starting to remind me of my grandmother who said the most outrageous (and unassailable) things imaginable. Unassailable because there was simply no point in arguing. Example: "I hope I die before people start runnin' around nekkid!" (she was North Carolina born and bred, and she got her wish, but just barely). Another gem: "I don't want no clonin' goin' on around me!" The truly outrageous comments involved race relations, so I'll refrain from repeating them here. Anyway, I wonder how long it will take Joni to start coming out with some real zingers like that, although I suppose one can argue that she already has, with comments like "I never wanted to be a star" -- come on! I do feel that it's inevitable. And I say that with love. I ADORE Herbie's take on "Sweet Bird" and I love Corrine Bailey Rae's interpretation of "River". What a voice. Overall I love the record, but do find it to be a bit plodding in places. I'm thrilled that he won record of the year. Oh, and I *love* Amy Winehouse's record. She's a great singer and her musical style is so fabulous -- I feel like she's paying tribute to the R&B of the 60's, but also joking around with it and just having a blast with it. I also think that she and Christian from "Project Runway" may have been separated at birth. Hopefully she won't go up in a cloud of crystal meth. I noticed in the last digest that a few of you are listening to Arcade Fire. Can someone please enlighten me? I have tried to listen to them and even tried to watch their Austin City Limits performance, but I just couldn't get through it. They strike me as complete posers, being weird for the sake of being weird, and it pisses me off. I have a similar reaction to them as I did to REM over 20 years ago (holy crap); I was non-plussed by "Radio Free Europe" and then read an early Rolling Stone interview with them and thought that they (in particular, Michael Stipe) were so utterly full of crap, and I was forever turned off by them. I do love "Shiny Happy People", but overall, I feel that they are one of the most overrated bands in the world. And speaking of cranky, I totally admit to being cranky and sometimes contrary (I never saw "Titanic" in the theater, for example, b/c the overwhelming ad campaign made me sick), but this whole Arcade Fire thing has me totally mystified. Perhaps I'm spoiled by living in NYC, but I tell you, any night of the week I can go out and hear a band that puts those whippersnappers to shame. I just don't get it. However, with all that being said, I am open to someone trying to change my mind, if any of you feel so inclined. I realize that my crankiness and contrariness isn't very useful in terms of getting to know new music, and it's probably unbecoming to someone still in her 30's ;-D but I am a bit of a music snob and have a pretty sensitive BS monitor. So don't feed me any BS. ;-D And I am totally bummed about JoniFest. :-( Crankily Yours, Kay np: the voices in my head. ;-D ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ KAY ASHLEY ~ Singer-Songwriter http://www.kayashley.com http://www.myspace.com/kayashley http://www.sonicbids.com/kayashley ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2008 13:24:21 -0500 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Re: "River" and other ramblings and ravings... We do get into lyric interpretation all the time (it's why I joined way back when), and even though a lot of it has been hashed out by us old-timers, there are always new voices and/or new interpretations that are discussed in this space. I guess what I'm saying is that while there are some inpretations that are literal and more obvious, there are others that are much more undefined. Blue Boy is a good example. But in Amy's case, I think the comparison is more valid than in other cases. She has the talent and the potential of being the greatest singer of her generation, but also the possibility of sinking into obscurity because of her addictions. In his recent Mojo interview, Robert Hilburn had some interesting quotes about being a 'confessional' songwriter from a past interview he had done with Joni. Apparently when he had brought this up in the previous interview, Joni had bristled and challenged him to name one of her songs that could be considered 'confessional'. She was probably over-reacting but I think her main point was that she takes events and people from her life and combines them with what her imagination comes up with to produce something that is not completely true to life - but not completely fabricated either. Something that any artist worth their salt does, imo. She draws on her experience to create her own, unique vision. That vision may have elements of 'real life' in it, but ultimately it is a creation that exists on its own. I could go on about painting not being about making photographically precise images of scenes or objects or people but that is getting in over my head a bit, so I won't. I guess all I really want to say is that I think it's a bit dangerous to try and fit Joni's lyrics too closely to people and events in her own life. Interpret away. I love to work out my own takes on Joni's lyrics. It's fun. But when you get into the 'this song is about James Taylor' or 'that lyric refers to Jackson Brown' kinda stuff, I start to get a bit uneasy. It feels more like gossip than interpretation. God, Patti Parlette, the JMOCD is contagious but I'll say it anyway - I'm not above gossip, but I'll sit on a secret where honor is at stake! lol! (I also almost wrote 'all I really, really want' in a previous sentence but thought better of it ;-) I really am not above a juicy bit of gossip every now and then. And I guess I'm not totally adverse to discussing Joni's personal life either as I know I do it here from time to time. But the 'which lover is that song about game?' is ultimately not appealing to me, I guess. In the long run, I don't care that much. I just love the songs. To try and work out what 'Passion Play (When All the Slaves are Free)' is about is great fun! Have at it! Bring it on! And if you're interested in interpreting her imagery in 'Blue Boy', I would love that as well. If you want to speculate about who the 'Blue Boy' is, go for it, you're certainly free to do so and more power to you. But ultimately, it doesn't interest me. Just one JMDLer's opinion. And you know there may be more. Has anybody wondered who Joni wishes would become President? Joni's not a U.S. citizen, is she (I know she's from Canada but I was wondering if she got her U.S. citizenship though I don't think so)? She is a resident though and has a right to say who'd she'd like as President. I wonder if Joni will mention anything in coming interviews...there's no way in hell she'd be for McCain or Huckabee with everything she says! -Monika - --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? I think I'll use that as my reason for not doing so....but really Joni did make a good point. Joni decided to pick her career, which essentially was her art (her music), over a standard choice of marriage. Can one have both? Yes, I do think so but I'd presume it is difficult especially when creativity is involved...ah let me explain. I think anything creative requires a good amount of solitude and self indulgence (not self indulgence in the bad sense here) where as marriage requires a good amount of time together (to grow, to love) and compromise. To be able to balance both is quite extraordinary though possible. I suppose you would need a very understanding (and not oversensitive!) spouse to be able to tell him/her, "leave me alone while I do this" and not be offended. I've often wondered about one's free time vs. time together. A question for you married folks....do you have an understanding that you need some alone time without your man/woman being insulted? I'm not just talking for creative matters here...just in general... Anyway, back on topic in this ramble! Also, there's the theory that "art comes from pain." If you buy into that, what happens if your creativity gets zapped when you get married due to gaining some happiness that you perhaps lacked? That seems a bit silly and quite a stretch but I could understand some thinking so. Or perhaps if you get married "life" will get in the way of doing all the creative things you can do when alone... I'm reading Sylvia Plath's unabridged journals and as a young adult she was worried she couldn't be married and keep writing. She thought if she got married, she'd be finished as far as her writing went...of course she did marry and she wasn't finished creatively speaking! Perhaps this was something in some way Joni was worried about? She couldn't have both? Anyway, I think we're all glad Joni decided to not take after the women in the family and continue in music! -M - --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. I will sign this, my millionth petition, Patti, & thank U for sharing it! But i've learned the hard way that petitions don't have much power. What i have learned is that if you really want something done then do it yourself because everyone seems far too self absorbed to even sign a petition which some politician will ignore anyway! I have planted hundreds of trees ever since i became aware of the deforestation crisis driving global warming back in the 1980s. SHINE has motivated me to purchase & plant 100 sequoias this year & every year for the rest of my life to erase my personal carbon footprint & contribute something beautiful to our holy Earth. The giant sequoia is the fastest growing tree in temperate zones 6 to 9 & one tree can convert 50 pounds of carbon dioxide into oxygen every year within a few years after planting. If you do the math it requires a half trillion sequoias to 'sequester' the 8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gasses humans contribute to the atmosphere every year. So i hope to live to plant 5000 sequoias before we go extinct from oxygen depletion = deforestation..... & it doesn't require genius or yet another petition or especially another politician It just requires someone like Hana to roll up their sleeves and pitch in What drives me crazy is how incredibly simple it all really is once you stop & really think about it! Planting 100 sequoias for Joni this year ET >> "Money, money, money.... Money makes the trees come down It makes mountains into molehills Big money kicks the wide wide world around." Right you are, Joni. We can't say you didn't warn us. "The Bush Administration has made several proposals to dismantle our National forests by selling off thousands of acres a move that would only benefit the administration's friends in the timber industry, coal interests and Big Oil. Adding insult to injury, YOU the American taxpayer are being forced to fund the destruction." We can try to stop these short-sighted businessmen/earth rapists by signing the Sierra Club-sponsored petition here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/919431571?z00m=13581161#body "Spirit of the water Give us all the courage and the grace To make genius of this tragedy unfolding The genius to save this place."
